WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
IN THE NAME OF OUR BLESSED SAVIOR
DIVINE SERVICE SETTING III
OPENING HYMN ”Praise to the Lord, the Almighty”
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
All:
Amen.
Pastor: Beloved in the Lord! Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our
Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.
Pastor: Our help is in the name of the Lord.
All:
who made heaven and earth.
Pastor: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.
All:
and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.
Pastor: O almighty God, merciful Father,
All:
I - a poor miserable sinner - confess unto You all my sins and iniquities, with which I have
ever offended You; and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am
heartily sorry for them, and sincerely repent of them; and I pray You of Your boundless
mercy, and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved
Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me - a poor sinful being.
Pastor: Upon this, your confession, I, by virtue of my office as a called and ordained servant of the
Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you; and, in the stead and by the command of my
Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins: in the Name of the Father, and of the
Son, and of the Holy Spirit!
All:
Amen!
SERVICE OF THE WORD
INTROIT
Pastor: I will sing to the LORD,
All:
because he has dealt bountifully with me.
Pastor: Consider and answer me, O LORD my God;
All:
light up my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death,
Pastor: lest my enemy say, “I have prevailed over him,”
All:
lest my foes rejoice because I am shaken.
Pastor: But I have trusted in your steadfast love;
All:
my heat shall rejoice in your salvation.
All:
(sung) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
2
KYRIE (sung)
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Christ, have mercy upon us.
Lord, have mercy upon us.
Pastor: (sung) Glory be to God on high!
All:
(sung) And on earth – peace, good will toward men.
We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee.
We glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.
O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.
O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ;
O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father,
that takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.
Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.
Thou that sittest at the right Hand of God the Father,
have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.
Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost,
art most high in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

All:

All:
O Lord,
keep Your family the Church continually in the true faith that, relying on the hope of Your
heavenly grace, we may ever be defended by Your might power; through Jesus Christ, Your
Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

NICENE CREED [All]
I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things, visible and
invisible.
And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all
worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one
substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation
came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made Man;
and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And on the third
3
day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of
the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, and Whose
Kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who
proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and the Son together, is worshiped and
glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. I
acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and
the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE WORDS OF OUR LORD
Our Lord, Jesus Christ, the same night in which He was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given
thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying: “Take, eat; this is My Body, which is given for you.
This do in remembrance of Me.”
After the same manner also He took the cup when He had supped, and when He had given thanks,
He gave it to them, saying, “Drink ye all of it; this cup is the New Testament in My Blood, which is shed for
you for the remission of sins. This do, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of Me.”
Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always!
All:
(sung) Amen!

that takest away the sin of the world, grant us Thy peace. Amen!

Mission Statement
St. John Lutheran Church, Cudahy, WI
Our primary purpose is to share the Good News
of salvation through Jesus Christ alone.
In order to do this, we:
GROW together in our faith through Word and Sacrament
DISCOVER our spiritual gifts
SHARE God’s
God s Law and Gospel
SERVE God by meeting the needs of others in mind, body, and spirit,
and
WELCOME all people to learn and embrace our faith
12
LIVING OUR FAITH
We have sought to analyze the meaning of the Word upon which our stewardship is based. But we have
also discovered that the Christ-centered message of the new life calls for more than analysis. It invites
both its proclaimers and its hearers to the venture of faith. It asks us to entrust ourselves
wholeheartedly to that Christ who is the living Word. Perhaps I can make this plainer by means of an
analogy from life. A half-century ago a man left his home in Europe, took his wife, his four-year old son
and his three daughters, and boarded an ocean liner bound for a new land, a land of freedom and
opportunity. He had heard the message of the richer, fuller, freer life in the new land, and he had come
to a decision to do something about it, although many ties were holding him back. As he walked the
gangplank from the shore to the ship, he knew: I have left my former life behind; I have entrusted my
future to this ship; I trust that it will carry me and my loved ones through night and storm to a more
abundant life. And the children, sharing their parents’ faith, sailed forth in the great adventure. This is a
simple illustration and it has been duplicated in thousands of lives. This particular case comes close to
me, for I was the four-year old boy in the drama and it was my destiny too that was being decided. But
does it not throw light on the Word of God and the response of stewardship? The Word is Christ’s call
to life eternal. We respond by entrusting ourselves to him. Our faith means that we dare to cross the
gangplank from unbelief to belief, from trusting our own resources to entrusting ourselves to his grace.
Hence we no longer live alone, but Christ lives in us. We are carried and supported. His saving and
sustaining power in his Word and his church is like a ship that sails through the ocean of the world. We
cast our burdens upon him. We discover again and again that our trust in him is not a trust misplaced.
His Word is sure, his love the one constant among life’s variables. And “having received this mercy we
faint not,” we do not lose heart or nerve in carrying out the responsibilities of the stewardship of this
faith.

FROM YOUR PARISH NURSE
Forming a Prayer Shawl Ministry Team
“Shawls…made for centuries, universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify.”
Job Description
Be willing to meet quarterly (approximately once, every 3 months or as decided by group) to help direct
the activities and decisions to fulfill the caring mission of the ministry.
Activities and Decisions include:
Creation of a Prayer Shawl display in our Narthex
Distribution of Prayer Shawls – Who? When? What?
Formation of visitation teams to deliver prayer shawls to church members
Brainstorm ideas for ministry growth and outreach
It is not necessary to know how to knit, crochet or sew a prayer shawl to be part of the Prayer Shawl
Ministry Team, but it would be of great value to have at least one person with knitting/crocheting skills
as part of the group.
Prayerfully consider if God might be calling you to become part of this caring ministry leadership team.
If interested, please contact our Parish Nurse, Marcia, through the church office at 414-481-0520 (office
hours are posted on the church calendar) or via email to: [email protected]. “I know God cares.”

FROM YOUR PARISH NURSE Cont’d
February is American Heart Month
“The Lord is my strength and shield. I trust him with all my heart. He helps me, and my heart is filled with joy.”
During the month of February, Americans see the human heart as the symbol of love. February is
American Heart Month, a time to show yourself the love. Learn about your risks for heart disease and
stroke and stay "heart healthy" for yourself and your loved ones.
Inactivity Physiology – WHAT?!
The term “Inactivity physiology” was first coined by researchers from the University of Missouri
(Columbia) in 2004. It’s based on the idea that there is a difference between excessive sitting and a lack
of purposeful exercising. Simply sitting too much during the daytime and evening hours was
discovered to pose many significant health risks; in particular, a greater chance of developing metabolic
syndrome, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Put another way, sitting too many hours in a day causes
problems with the way your body works and simply working out in a gym for a few spurts each week,
does not prevent those problems.
Since 2004, may studies have confirmed the risks of “inactivity physiology”. The link between sitting
too much and disease causing deaths has proven to be solid science. The good news: increasing your
daily activity throughout the day, simply by standing up, walking, stretching, etc., can help reduce the
dangerous effects of sitting. There are many creative ways to make this happen, but simply standing up
is a good starting point. Bottom line: try not to let more than an hour of sitting go by without some sort
of movement interruption – it’s the healthy thing to do!
Peace and health in Christ, Marcia L. Isherwood, RN, BSN
