February 2015, Issue 9 Dear Club Member, We are happy to report that the club is open for regular operations and activities. The Grand Opening party was a huge success as we had approximately 750 in attendance. It was certainly a special and memorable night. The Sports and Golf Grand Opening went very well and we certainly have much to be proud of. Many thanks go out to our Board of Directors and Committees for their assistance and guidance in completing the “soft opening” phase and Grand Opening Celebration festivities. I am pleased with the performance of our staff as they have been as excited as you to finally have our club open and operational. Our training period is complete, but like all great service organizations, we will never stop training and we do have several areas that we need to polish. Our staffing levels will be adjusted, as we are experiencing great participation in all club areas on Friday’s , Saturday’s and Sunday’s especially. We are always open to your comments regarding all phases of club operations and please feel free to let us know how we are doing by emailing [email protected]. Improvement is constant! Continue on page 2 1 A few facility features of the club are not complete but should be in the coming weeks. Our wine lockers have been installed and that program is under way. Details of this program are included in our Food & Beverage column of this newsletter. The remaining men’s lockers are being completed and will be installed in a few weeks. We are obtaining quotes for some day lockers to be installed in the Sports facility. The trophy cases will be installed in the Sunset Grille soon, and we hope to have a nice presentation of our current major championship trophies along with some memorabilia from our Selva Marina past. The cable TV issue has been resolved in the Fitness Center with many channels now available on the machinery. Additional outdoor furniture is being ordered for the clubhouse patio as the current tables and chairs were intended for the pool deck. We are awaiting our pool certification from the State of Florida, which should be in hand soon. This is the reason the pool has been closed. Patio Hello Atlantic Beach Country Club, It has been an amazing first month! Thank you to everyone for your support during our opening. We served 226 members for our first dining service on New Year’s Eve! We followed that up with serving over 200 members on the following Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It was amazing seeing the membership on January 10th for the Grand Opening Party! I got the chance to meet many of you that evening, and I look forward to our next club event. The response from you has been wonderful! The most popular entrée, hands down, has been the Sweet Tea Brined Pork Chop. Chef Marvin has many more delicious culinary creations coming soon. One of the many features of the club that I am excited about are the wine lockers in the Cypress Room. We already have thirty members who have signed up for the Wine Locker Club, and only 18 lockers left! You can purchase a locker for $250 plus an annual fee of $250. Wine Locker Club owners will receive a personalized wine locker. Keys for your locker are held on premise by the management team. Lockers are leased on a twelve month basis, with right of renewal 2 heaters are also on tap as we have seen a tremendous interest in outdoor dining and use of the fire pit. It is truly a special view at sunset and will become even busier as warmer weather approaches. holiday, in which case, we will be closed on Tuesday. Much of our intensive work will be done on the golf course on the closure day, and our pool will be chemically shocked as well. One area that is now functional is our gate access system at the clubhouse. The primary reason for this gate control system is so that only our members have complete and exclusive use of the pool, fitness and tennis facilities. Per the membership categories, the cards are programmed to allow access to the areas that are included in your membership. Our Membership Office is now distributing the cards, and our golf shop will soon have lanyards available for children. The gates will be automatically closed at all times but do allow for access in Fitness and Tennis seven days per week and from 5 am to 10 pm. We will have staff on duty during the day from Tuesday through Sunday. The clubhouse, pool and golf course will be closed entirely on Mondays unless it is a Club Membership growth has continued with fantastic momentum and it may be a reality that the membership will be at its cap by the end of 2015! Many thanks go out to our Membership Committee, Membership Director, Melissa Bryan, and Head Golf Professional, Spencer Brown for their efforts in making this happen. Thank you all for your kind comments and patience during the opening process. It has been a fantastic month and we look forward to warmer weather ahead and the start of spring!! given to the wine locker owner at the end of the year. Each Wine Locker Club owner will have a personal inventory ledger in their locker that will be kept up to date by the staff. We are going to have exclusive events available for locker owners. We will have “Buy In” tastings of unique wines for you to stock your locker at special pricing. You can also bring in wine from your personal collections and have reduced corkage fees and advanced notice for reservations to all wine events. We will be having wine dinners featuring wine makers and vineyard representatives, casual tastings, seminars and many other fun events. We will hold four scheduled wine tasting events for the Wine Locker Club Owners throughout the 2015 year. Upcoming dates and themes are being finalized and will be posted soon. Contact me at 904-372-2222 ext 108 if you are interested in being a member of the locker owners club. See you in the dining room, Steve Serokee Food and Beverage Manager Regards, Ed Tucker General Manager Letter From Executive Chef With springtime just around the corner and a ton of New Year’s resolutions vowing to trim the waistline, we want to be there to help! Beginning January 20, we will be offering daily lunch and dinner options with a caloric count of 500 or less. It is our goal to help our members enjoy their club more frequently without having to worry about low fat and low calorie options in our dining facilities. By using only the leanest cuts of meat, poultry and the freshest seafood paired with garden fresh vegetables and super foods like quinoa, we will create high protein, energy packed dishes. Using ingredients such as Earth Balance soy based, gluten free and GMO free butter, we can still deliver flavor without the negative effects usually accompanied with butter based products. In addition to our low calorie options, we will begin to offer gluten free hamburger and hotdog buns, so that you can enjoy our fantastic brisket blend burgers and National Deli hotdogs even if you have sensitivity to gluten. Let’s look forward to having a tasty and healthy year! Regards, Marvin McClelland Executive Chef Word from the Golf Course Superintendent It’s nice to finally have the course open for play. The course looks to be “grown in”, but keep in mind it is still just a baby. Mother nature has been kind and given us a mild winter so far. The last cold snap really turned the Bermuda off color and it will stay that way until spring. The greens are in great shape and the rest of the playing surfaces are good, however everyone needs to be aware that we need to get through a full growing season before the course starts to mature. Have fun out there and remember…a happy ball mark is a repaired ball mark! Our course at Atlantic Beach Country Club has many bunkers and other sandy areas such as natural sand areas and coquina cart paths. After consulting with the USGA and the golf course architect, these unique sand features are requiring our Club to set a Local Rule stating: “ALL sandy areas including bunkers, natural areas, and coquina cart paths are considered an interegal part of the golf course. ” This local rule allows a player to do the following: • Ground his or her club during practice swings • Remove loose impediments • Free relief from a plugged ball (Drop the ball as close to where it lies. If it plugs after your drop, drop a second time, and if it plugs a second time, place your ball) When taking relief, the ball must remain on the same playing condition surface. • Free relief from a ball coming to rest in a footprint or tire track (Drop the ball as close to where it lies. If it plugs after your drop, drop a second time, and if it plugs a second time, place your ball) When taking relief, the ball must remain on the same playing condition surface. The Club has set this rule based on the following criteria: • Some of our bunkers blend into these natural sand areas and the definition of bunker sand and natural sand is too subjective. • The bunker sand on our new course has yet to settle. Because of this there tends to be too much sand in the bunkers, which promotes balls to plug in their own pitch mark. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the golf professional staff. Thank you Spencer Brown, PGA Head Golf Professional Great start to 2015 in the Fitness Center!
