VOLUME 21 ISSUE 2 February 2015 President’s Message By: Bert Lundberg Well, January came in like a lamb with temperatures in the 60’s and within a week the temperatures plummeted to the single digits. As I am writing this report it is only January 7th so I am hoping that the rest of the month warms up to where it is bearable. With this bitter arctic blast it is a good thing to check on your shut-in neighbors to make sure that they are safe or even a phone call would suffice. Remember, we are all one big family here at Cedar Glen Lakes. At last month’s Stockholders meeting on January 21st we had a presentation by Ginny Muscarella from Senior Services. This power point presentation was also witnessed by our new mayor, Kenneth T. Palmer. He had requested permission to view the presentation as a learning process. In the upcoming Board of Directors election there are 6 openings for Board of Directors. As I write this message only 6 candidates picked up petitions to run for these positions. Four are incumbents and 2 newcomers. If no one else steps forward, the Board decided not to have an election thus saving the village approximately $700.00 for this process. At this time I would like to thank our 2 outgoing Directors. First is Don Callaghan who has served many years on the Board and as past Treasurer and President. Second is Lorraine Hines who was your Treasurer for the last few years. I would like to thank them for their service to our community and wish them well in their future endeavors. We invited Manchester’s new mayor, Kenneth T. Palmer, to our re-organization meeting. He thanked us for inviting him to our community and advised it would be a pleasure to visit our residents here at Cedar Glen Lakes and share his vision for Manchester Twp. Remember, we will also be swearing in our new Board of Directors at this time. It will be on March 18th at 1:30 pm. I am inviting all our residents to either come out to Lakeside Hall or view it live on Channel 22. After the swearing-in ceremony we will be enjoying refreshments hosted by the Board of Directors, their wives and husbands. A couple of clubs have changed their by-laws. The Singles That Mingle Club wanted to change the name to the Men and Women’s Singles Club and also asked that residents be from Cedar Glen Lakes and single. This was approved by the Board of Directors. The second club was The Common Goal which Continued on page 3 Trips & Tours Travel & Cruise Center ! ! r a e Y h t 6 2 r u O g in t Celebra BOOK YOUR 2015 SUMMER CRUISE SPECIALS NOW! Last but not least, I am hoping for another successful year here at Cedar Glen lakes and I know many of the newer residents will find this a warm and welcoming community to live in. Nancy Brown, President February 2015 ECHOES OF THE GLEN 5 The Creative Writers of the Glen We, the Creative Writers, wish to extend an invitation to all residents to join our group. Do you have wonderful memories about your family that you would like to get down on paper for your family and friends to enjoy? That’s how most of us got started writing. Perhaps you had a special vacation, or trip, that you would like to remember and share with others? What better way than to put it down on paper in your own words so others may go on the trip with you by reading about it! We have a suggested topic list from which to choose, either by yourself or as a group and welcome any suggestions you may like to add or you can write about anything at all! Some weeks you may not write anything and that’s OK! Those who have written will read their piece for all in the group to enjoy and each month one is submitted to put in the “Echoes” – on a voluntary basis. Wouldn’t it be nice to get out of the house for a little while each week and enjoy some social time with a friendly group? We look forward to welcoming you, whenever you can come and check us out!!! We meet every Tuesday in the West Hall Conference Room at 2:00 PM and our meetings usually last about an hour. Come down and meet us and see if you might like to join us! BULLETIN ECHOES OF THE GLEN February 2015 AD 4670 6 Serving Whiting and surrounding areas for over 20 years! Creative Writers PLEASE STOP THE MUSIC By Marie McGuire We’Ve MOVeD! and she responded that she liked it. The other day while driving my car I was stopped at a light and a younger person pulled up next to me. My windows were closed and so were his. However, through the closed windows the sound from his radio (supposedly music) was reverberating. I could feel it in my car with some awful beating. We are raising a group of soon to be deaf adults. Boy, will Miracle Ear have a ball when they get older. When I tell my grandchildren the music is too loud, and to please turn off the music, they look at me. I can hear their music although they have the earphones on their ears. I guess we are lucky because we have the memories of the great sounds…as the band plays on. Dr. Scott A. Amoss, DPM, CWS Board Certified Podiatrist/Surgeon Certified Wound Specialist spc-1083c Please Stop The Music, why the title? It was something ringing in the back of my head. It can mean different things to different people, but to me it was a potpourri. Being a romantic, the music of yesterday was the music I enjoyed, big bands, serenades, ballads, some of the classics, show tunes and listening to the words without straining your ears. Music has changed over the years, from music you could understand to the music of yesterday and today, heavy metal, hard rock, rhythm and blues. I’m not saying it’s all bad, but at times I would like to say, “Please turn off the music.” Could it be I am dating myself? I must say, recently, my granddaughter was listening to “our” music, New Patients & Emergencies Welcome Same Day Appointments Available • Diabetic Foot Care • Heel Pain & Bone Spurs • Diabetic Shoes & Insoles • Foot & Ankle Injuries Community Medical Center - Attending Physician • Wound Care • Digital X-rays • Ingrown & Fungal Nails • Vascular Testing • Corns & Calluses • Laser Treatments Available • Bunions & Hammertoes • Skin Cancer Medicare & Most Insurance Accepted 400 Lacey Road, Suite 9B 732-350-0100 Call Now! Nothing feels better than to see a quilt completed and hear all the ahs, oohs, “that’s beautiful, the colors are perfect, wow you made that”. Some are hand quilted and some are machine quilted. Each one is beautiful and the love that is put into them is unbelievable. To me, this wonderful group of women has encouraged me to try and complete old projects and start new ones. The friendship is real, the laughter is non-stop. The group has soul, we share our fabric, our lunch, our joy, our heartache, and we are quilters put together piece by piece. You’ll never know how truly special each one of you are. The sad part is we don’t have any room for new members at this time, but you can come down and check us out and get on a waiting list. Thankfully we made it past the holidays, with all its ups and downs. We had to postpone the Polar Bear swim in our lake on the first of January due to no ambulances available on standby. It was one of our “thinking out of the box” activities for the New Year. We are looking into Wheel Chair Races around the club house; of course this isn’t official, and we are still in the discussion stage. Please no practicing! Things have been quiet in our village this past month due to the cold weather. There have been no streaking sightings. We are always on the lookout for this, due to possible frost bite. Please dress in layers when you go out, remember the hat and gloves along with being fully dressed. As we get older we have a harder time maintaining our body temperature. Important Reminder: Please use a flash light and if possible something reflective when walking at night. You are important to us, be safe. We are now in 2015, with a fresh new start on the New Year. We are on the lookout for new members for our Security Patrol. This would be a great opportunity to get out and do something for yourself and our Village. Come out to our meetings and see if this is something that you would be interested in. We are an equal opportunity group, men and women with common sense are welcome. Patrols are done in pairs at all times, so you’re never alone. We don’t get out of the van; we report information to our Base Station which deals with the situation. Your food donations, collected at our meetings, are always appreciated by The Whiting Food Pantry. Next Security Patrol meeting is February 9th at 7:00 PM in the West Hall. We’ll be looking for you. Geri Soto Bob Barrett, President Men and Women’s Singles Club What’s that? A new club? No, it’s us – Singles That Mingle. Since January, we are known as Men and Women’s Singles Club. We had a really nice Christmas Party in December, with lots of food, games, and a gift exchange. In January, we started off the new year with new officers and a new schedule of trips. We go places that are local and car pool, and once in a while, we go further on a bus. But once a month, we go somewhere. All singles are welcome. Dues are $12 a year. Come to the meetings at 6:30 PM on the third Wednesday of the month. We’d love to see you. This gives us the opportunity to shoot some landscapes and seascapes of the places we visit. It is very important to make certain you hold your camera level on this type of shot so the horizon is straight and level. Having a tilted horizon line is especially important when shooting sunrises and sunsets. If the horizon is tilted (even slightly) it will make the image seem unnatural and give it an unbalanced feel. It is also important to keep your camera level when shooting indoors. Horizontal lines, such as a fireplace mantel, molding, or door frames, that are not level will make your images less appealing. When photographing, take your time and make certain your composition is good and level. That’s it for this month. As always you can email me with any questions at [email protected]. If you’d like to see more of my images you can visit my site at www.KirmsPhotography.com . Remember to keep shooting and trying to improve your images, but most importantly, have fun with your camera.
