Glen Grove Newsletter Office (847)998-5030 Health Office (847)998-5031 From The Principal’s Desk Dear Glen Grove Families, The beginning of the calendar year always brings a surge of excitement to a school. For one, January marks the midpoint of our school year, but it is also the time of year that we begin planning for the next school year while staying focused on our current goals. Speaking of our goals, we just completed our Glen Grove data days. During data days, each grade level team comes together for a half-day to analyze school-wide and individual student data. We use this information to ensure that we are meeting all of our studentsʼ needs and to identify focused interventions we can implement for the remainder of the year if we find we are not on target with our goals. As stated in past newsletters, because there are no norms for winter testing periods, we will not be using these assessments as reporting tools for parents, and winter reports will not be sent home; however, the winter results will be reflected on the reports that will be sent home after our spring assessments are completed in May. Although important and informative, these winter assessments should not be considered high stress, high stakes tests. They are truly meant to inform us around the progress our students are making and be a natural part of the ongoing improvement process. January also marks the start of transition planning. If you are the parent of a kindergartner, 2nd grader, or 5th grader, look for information to come about the processes we have in place to ensure that each of the academic transitions that our District 34 students experience are as seamless as they can be for both the students and their families. If you havenʼt already done so, take a peek at the new and improved Glen Grove website. It has a neater, sleeker look and is much easier to navigate. We want our website to be an effective communication tool that strengthens the home-school partnership around the success of our children, so please do check it out at http://gg.glenview34.org/, and if you have any suggestions for improving it, please pass them along to us. We are always looking for ways to enhance anything we do. Finally, if you are someone who drives your student(s) to and/or from school, please review the drop-off/ pick-up procedures outlined on the following page. Student safety is a priority, and by following these simple, yet very important guidelines, we are all working together to make sure that the Glen Grove drop-off and pick-up process is as safe and efficient as it can possibly be for our students and their families. Itʼs still January, so I take this opportunity to end with a wish to our amazing Glen Grove Community for a joyful, healthy, prosperous and happiest new year ahead! Respectfully, Very Important SAFETY Reminder Helena Vena If you are picking up or dropping off your student in the Car Pick-Up Lane, please remain in your vehicle until your child joins you or exits your car. This single lane is a designated pick-up/drop-off zone NOT to be used for long or short-term parking. Please do NOT form a second Car Pick-Up lane next to the designated curbside lane. When a second lane is formed, children dart between cars in the first lane to get to their family vehicle in the next lane putting themselves between two moving vehicles – a very unsafe practice. And what better way to kick off this chocolate loving time of year than to talk about a healthy smile? Nutrition begins in the mouth. Children need to have strong teeth to be able to chew healthy foods and fuel their bodies. Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease and is the result of plaque coming in contact with sugar, causing acid to eat away at teeth. But good news- it’s 100% preventable! Sugar is found in many foods, so regulating the amount your child consumes is a great step. Look at food labels and avoid foods with added sugars. In addition, the American Dental Association recommends limiting snacking and keep to a balanced and varied diet full of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats and protein. Students worked on bumping and serving the volleyball. We also introduced the advanced skill of setting a volleyball. Students were given the opportunity to climb our cargo net, as a second climbing element. We are currently in our basketball unit. Students are working on the skills of dribbling, passing and shooting the basketball. Our next unit will be our gymnastics unit in which students will learn stunts, tumbles / rolls, balances, and jumps. At the end of the unit, they will be putting together their own gymnastics routine as well as improving their flexibility. We will be kicking-off our Jump Rope for Heart program next week. This is a program, in conjunction with the American Heart Association, where we promote jumping rope for a healthy heart. Our official Jump Rope for Heart event is on Friday, March 6, 2015. All students, during their Physical Education time, will be jumping rope on that day. Students were also given the option to collect money for the American Heart Association. You can set up an online donation using their website: http://www.heart.org/ jump. Students will learn that with their donations to the American Heart Association they are able to help people of all ages. The American Heart Association offers information for living a healthy life. It is a program called My Life Check. There are seven steps to living a healthy life. They are: get active, check your cholesterol, eat better, manage your blood pressure, lose weight, reduce your blood sugar and stop smoking. They offer a free heart score at: http://www.heart.org/MyLifeCheck Our upcoming units in PE will be Bowling and Dance. Students will work on the underhand throwing/rolling motion while aiming at a target (bowling pins) in the bowling unit. In the Dance unit, students will be working on following steps in rhythm while learning some line and folk dances. Health Office (847)998-5031 Homework and Vacation The following are the Extended Absence Homework Policy guidelines that we have put into place to provide the framework for work that needs to be completed because of an extended absence. Strong school attendance is a critical component to a student's success in school and the importance of good attendance is constantly stressed at Glen Grove. While we value the experiences children receive from visiting other places and spending time with family members afar, it is strongly advised that families schedule trips and vacations within school holiday periods, so as not to impact a studentʼs attendance at school. If your child will be out of school for an extended vacation, notify the teacher and the health office, in writing, in advance of the absence. Homework or make-up work is not provided in advance for extended vacations. It is expected that your child will keep a journal of the trip and complete an independent reading log to be turned in upon his/ her return to school. Please know that teachers will work to provide some of the learning opportunities and work that will be missed upon return. However, the teachers are not able to recreate the classroom environment, so please understand that there may be experiences or learning situations that cannot be recreated or adapted. Upon return, the teachers will work to create manageable assignments and deadlines for core assignments, but it will be the studentʼs responsibility to make-up the work. Note: If a student experiences an extended absence for medical reasons, there is the option to pursue eligibility for homebound instruction during that absence. Illinois Text Messaging and Cell Phone Laws In school zones, it is a statewide law that unless the vehicle is parked in a parking space, or a handsfree device is used, drivers may not operate cell phones. This applies to buses as well as any other vehicles operating within the school zone. Fines for violation of Illinois cell phone law start at $75. Illinoisʼs cell phone and texting laws are considered “primary” laws. A primary law means that an officer can pull you over for the offense without having to witness some other violation. PLEASE DO NOT TALK OR TEXT IN THE GLEN GROVE SCHOOL ZONE. IT IS FOR THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS. Glen Grove Newsletter Office (847)998-5030 From the Nurses Office Students requiring any medications during school hours must file a medication form with the health office. This form requires a physicianʼs signature as well as a parentʼs signature. All medication brought to school must be in an appropriately labeled pharmacy container. This also includes over-thecounter medicine such as Tylenol, Advil, Cough Drops, etc. In order to care for asthma medication, additional forms need to be completed. Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours. All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 998-5031! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time. ______________________________________ Health Office (847)998-5031 Please make sure your children are dressed appropriately for outdoor play. In cold weather boots, mittens or gloves, warm jackets, snow pants, hats and scarves are a must. If your child wears boots to school, please remember to send in shoes for them to use during physical education. The wind chill factor must be ten or below or it must be too wet or raining before we cancel outdoor recess. The children are out approximately 20 minutes. Please note that children must wear coats if temperatures are below 32°F. We are often presented with requests for children to remain indoors at recess, generally because of allergies or as part of a recovery from illness. If it is necessary for your child to be indoors at recess, a note from the doctor will be required. We appreciate your support and cooperation with our recess procedure. ______________________________________ Important Information from the Health Office ALL STUDENT absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:55 a.m. at (847) 998-5031! The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time. PLEASE DO NOT CALL YOUR CHILD’S TEACHER WITH AN ABSENCE AS THE HEALTH OFFICE DOESN’T ALWAYS RECEIVE THE MESSAGE. PLEASE ALSO REMEMBER TO LET THE HEALTH OFFICE KNOW IF YOUR CHILD IS GOING TO BE ABSENT FOR AN EXTENDED AMOUNT OF TIME. ______________________________________ Outdoor Recess Procedures The benefits of an outdoor recess are many and Glen Grove makes every effort to see that all of our students go outdoors every day. Children are able to exercise, socialize and experience a variety of activities with friends and this all helps to enhance their learning experience. Starting the afternoon after a time of fresh air definitely improves learning, alertness and overall productivity. ______________________________________ Just a reminder....if your child is out sick with a fever or vomiting please make sure they do not return to school until they are fever free or symptom free for 24 hours. If your child needs to come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students. Thank you. ______________________________________ Important Car Pick-Up Information If you are picking your student up in the car pick-up lane, please remain in your vehicle until your child joins you in your car. This lane is a designated pick-up/dropoff zone NOT to be used for long or short-term parking. Consistently adhering to procedures for dropping-off and picking-up children will help us meet our goal of providing the safest most efficient environment during those very busy dismissal and arrival times. HOW DO WE MAKE OUR DECISION? The superintendent makes the decision based upon: • Information on road conditions from our transportation provider and from our facilities and grounds department. • Amount of snow and ice accumulated. • Whether snow/ice is continuing. • Building conditions (such as whether we have electricity and heat). • Parking lot conditions. • Temperature/wind chill for walkers and those waiting at bus stops. We prefer not making our decision based on weather predictions, but sometimes this is unavoidable. We also make our decision in cooperation with other area elementary districts and with Glenbrook South High School. HOW ARE PARENTS NOTIFIED? There are several ways to find out if school is closed (or open on what seems like a bad weather day). • Tune in to local radio: WGN (720-AM) and WBBM (780-AM). • Tune in to local television: CBS, NBC, ABC, WGN, FOX and CLTV. • Visit the Districtʼs website at www.glenview34.org. • Visit the school closing website at www.emergencyclosings.com. Please know the District will attempt to use its automated phone calling system and send an electronic message to all parent e-mail addresses on file to inform parents if school is closed. This will occur around 6:00 a.m. WHEN IS THE DECISION MADE? Usually, the decision to close school is made at 5:30 a.m. or earlier. INFORMATION ON EARLY BUS DISMISSAL AT INTERMEDIATE If conditions worsen during the school day, we might have an early bus dismissal at the intermediate schools. This is NOT an early dismissal. The goal of releasing buses early is to try to keep them running on schedule throughout the afternoon. Walkers and pickups will still be dismissed at the usual time. The only change is intermediate buses leave 15 minutes early. OTHER INFORMATION Although the District does its best, we know that often no perfect decision exists. If parents do not feel as though it is safe for their child to attend school, they should use their best judgment on whether he or she should attend.
