Walford Mill Education Trust Ltd is a registered charity Charity No. 1049540 2 3 Norwegian Sweater Annemor Sundbo’s Ragpile collection, white wool darning, 90 x 130cm, 2010 By Celia Pym Knit 1, Mend 1, Keep 1, Change 1 17 January - 1 March Exploring ideas around sustainability, slow fashion and meaning through the work of makers innovating and questioning approaches to knitting and ownership, this exhibition will enable you to find out about the stitch-hacking and patternblagging approach of maker and researcher Amy Twigger Holroyd alongside Bridget Harvey’s A Jumper to Mend, A Jumper to Lend project. Explore the work of Celia Pym, an artist who thinks of herself as a mending detective. Through her knitting and darning projects she draws attention to why we treasure some garments enough to keep them, repair them and hold on to the stories they represent, reclaiming them and recognising intrinsic beauty. Cleo has a very distinctive approach to her work using the medium of mosaic, believing that restricting herself to recycling objects opens the creative mind to focus on realising the potential of the materials to hand. ‘The inherent qualities of the pattern in the tableware are cropped, reshuffled, taken out of context and reassembled.’ Cleo pieces together disparate fragments and symbols to create meaningful mosaic images and stories of abundance. Keep an eye on our website for further details of more mosaic workshops. July - Mosaic Shoes with Sue Smith October - Mosaic Mirrors with Sue Smith 6 7 WANDERLUST Tapestry by Jilly Edwards (solo show) 25 April - 31 May Jilly Edwards is one of the UK’s leading tapestry weavers and creates her work from a personal response to the places she visits. The journeys she takes are captured in her painted sketches. She takes inspiration from her travels, be it around the world or to her favourite beach, hillside or just a walk to the corner shop and her response to the feelings and memories these places evoke is translated into the final tapestry, rather than it being a literal representation of a specific place. The tapestries in this exhibition explore her journeys through different landscapes, including works in a vivid yellow colour palette. These began on two long train journeys where she passed fields of oilseed rape in the countryside. The bright yellow colour of the crops brought Jilly a sense of renewed happiness which she went on to capture in thread. The exhibition explores the rich vein of folk songs and dances that have emanated from, and been inspired by, England’s textiles industry; songs about roving hecklers, doffing mistresses, croppers, mowers and drunken tailors. Surprising and thought provoking, contemporary and historic, this collaborative project involved an impressive group of artists including Freddie Robins, Shane Waltener, Prick Your Finger, Stewart Easton, Celia Ward, the McGrath Makers’ Group, as well as artists from the collective samplercultureclash - Jason Singh, Hector MacInnes, Anne Martin and Aimée Leonard. This contemporary work has been made in response to influences such as the laments of Coventry ribbon weavers, protests of Preston steam-loom strikers and Huddersfield loom breakers, as well as the processes and sounds of making; strutching and hackling to the rhythms of the spinning wheel, the din of the weaving shed, the punching of digital embroidery machines and the hum of the 3D printer. We are delighted to bring Yan Tan Tethera to Dorset to coincide with Wimborne Folk Festival which takes place on 12,13 and 14 June. Walford Mill Crafts will be running family craft workshops in town as part of Wimborne Folk Festival.
