NORTHWEST REGION QUIZ 2015 HOSTED BY: MAPLEWOOD PONY CLUB Enclosed is the information you will need to compete in the Northwest Region Quiz 2015. Please make sure everything is completed and a club check is enclosed before mailing the packet back. Packets that aren’t complete won’t be processed. There is a checklist located on the Entry Form. PLEASE REMEMBER - PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A MEDICAL CARD IN AN ARMBAND OR A MEDICAL BRACELET (PER USPC RULES)!!!!!!!! NO EXCEPTIONS. Date: March 7th, 2015 Packets are due to Maplewood Pony Club by February 28, 2015. No packets will be accepted after this deadline. The number of teams that will be competing will be limited to 30. The slots will be filled in the order that we receive the packets, so get yours in early! Maplewood is having a food drive for the Maple Valley Food Bank. If you would like, you can bring a can of food or a toiletry. Any donation is appreciated! Thank You! Things to bring: Sack lunch with a drink (participants are not allowed to leave the premises for Lunch). Snacks and some drinks will be provided. Wear Pony Club pin and bring a spare per team. PARTICIPANTS MUST HAVE A MEDICAL CARD IN AN ARM BAND OR MEDICAL BRACELET. Quiet games for down time recommended. Attire: Please refer to Quiz Handbook, Section 1, Article 7. Clean, neat, appropriate attire is expected. Sleeveless shirts and bare midriffs are not appropriate. Acceptable footwear is a shoe that is well fitted to the foot, securely fastened, entirely closed, covers the ankle, thick soled and in good condition. Refer to the current HM Handbook for current rules on jewelry. Teams: Your Club is welcomed to bring multiple teams. You are encouraged to find your own catch participant if needed to complete your team. Let us know if you need help. Team members must be in good standing, have all fees paid, and be recorded with the USPC National Office. Rules: Know the Quiz Competition 2015 handbook. No books or study materials are allowed in the building at any time. Participants will not be allowed to leave the building once Quiz has started until the conclusion of competition. If spectators enter a quiz room, they must remain throughout the round. No talking or coaching will be allowed in any phase of the Quiz. If there is any talking during the written test, all parties involved will be expelled, with the exception of those receiving the test with prearranged assistance. Spectators are not allowed to videotape or record any part of the session. Quiz questions must not be written down at any time. Only Junior D competitors have the option of conferring with teammate on an individual question in the oral exam. No D may compete on a C team; and no C may compete on a D team. Teams comprised of both Jr. and Sr. individuals will compete in the senior division. Divisions: Division I Division II Division III Division IIII Junior D and unrated (12 yrs of age or less) Senior D and unrated (13 yrs through 25 yrs) Junior C/B (14 yrs of age or less) Senior C/B (15 yrs through 25 yrs) Competitor’s age is determined as of January 1, 2015. Teams composed of mixed age groups will compete in the Sr. division of that level. D teams may consist of any combination of unrated through D-3. C teams may consist of any combination of C-1 through B. Individuals or teams with less than three members may be combined with other teams or clubs to form a combined team or teams. In an effort to minimize confusion and frustration for everyone, please try to set up your own catch team. If you are unable to create your own team prior to mailing we will try to set up one for you. Make sure you indicate this on the entry form. Be sure to indicate the competitor’s age, rating and club on the entry form. Each team must designate a Team Captain on the entry form. There will be several rounds of questions per division, depending on the number of teams in the competition. Each team member will be asked a question in turn. All D competitors will have 20 seconds in which to begin their answer unless stated before the question that a longer time is allowed. All other competitors will have 15 seconds in which to begin their answer. If a competitor needs help reading the test please check the box on the entry form, or call Susan. Someone will be available to help so this is a positive experience for everyone. Ribbons will be awarded to all teams in each division. Quiz Entry Form. Please make sure all forms are signed. Also please note there are two adults required to attend with a team (one chaperone and one volunteer) on the entry form. Teams from the same club may share a chaperone but NOT a volunteer. Please note the check off list in the lower left corner of the entry form. A club check must be included. Please make checks payable to Maplewood Pony Club. Incomplete packets will not be processed. IMPORTANT TO KNOW Rules: All competitors will compete at their rating level as of the Quiz Entry closing date. (This year February 28, 2015) No cell phones will be allowed on competitors. Please give them to your Chaperone when Quiz commences. Quiz Championships (Quiz Competition Handbook 2015): 1. Competitors qualify for Championships by competing in a qualifying Quiz. Hs, H-As and As wishing to compete at Championships do not have to qualify at a Regional Quiz but must have permission of their RS. 2. Divisions: Junior D – D2 and D-3, 10-12 years of age Senior D – D2 and D-3, 13-21 years of age Junior C/H-B/B, 10-14 years of age Senior C-H-B/B, 15-21 years of age B/H/H-A/A – teams of only two members, 14-21 years of age Note: Quiz competitors MUST BE AT LEAST 10 YEARS OF AGE before JAN 1 to compete in USPC Championships of that year. 3. Qualifications: a) It is the responsibility of the RS to correctly place the Pony Club members by age and rating and to abide by the Team Membership Regulations. b) All competitors must have qualified in a Qualifying Regional Quiz Rally within the 12 months preceding the Championships. c) In order to qualify for Championships, all competitors must have obtained their D-2 ratings prior to competing in their Regional Quiz Rally. Championship qualifiers who rate up between Regional Quiz Rally and Championships will compete at the level at which they qualified. d) Qualifiers do not have to qualify together as a team. e) Composition of Teams: Each Region may determine the criteria for qualification and selection of team members, i.e., all members of a first place team or the top 4 individuals, while still abiding by the age and HM certification regulations. f) No Region shall select its Championships team solely on the individual score of a single Phase. g) A Junior D who qualifies on a Senior D team has the option of competing on a Junior D team or a Senior D team. h) A Junior C who qualifies on a Senior C team has the option of competing on a Junior C team or a Senior C team. These decisions should be made in consultation with the PC member, the DC, the RS, and the Quiz Committee as needed. 4. USPC Championship Format a) Championship Phases are generally held for three days b) The Classroom competition follows Regional Quiz Rules, but differs in the following areas: For at least one Round, the competitor will have the option of being asked questions at his/her HM certification level or one level above for a maximum value of 10 points. For at least one other Round, the competitor will have the option of being asked questions at his/her HM certification level, one level above, or two levels above, for a maximum value of 15 points. For the last Round, all questions will be two levels above the competitor’s HM certification level for a maximum value of 15 points. Jr. Ds will only have the option to confer in the first round of questions. 5. Ties at Championships a) At the beginning of the first Classroom Phase in a Division, a written team question will be given to every team for the sole purpose of breaking any tie. b) If a tie remains, the teams that are tied will be given a timed, written team question. The team with the most correct answer will be the winner. ONE LAST TIME…….PARTICIPANTS MUST BE WEARING A MEDICAL CARD IN AN ARMBAND OR MEDICAL BRACELET AND A PONY CLUB PIN!!!!!!! WE WILL BE CHECKING FOR THESE WHEN THE TEAM CHECKS IN.
