GI Nurses and other Allied Health Care Professionals, GI Fellows
The UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases is dedicated to its mission
of advancing the scientific knowledge and understanding of
digestive disorders. Through discoveries in our laboratories and
their translation to novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches,
we make improvements in care that are relieving suffering and
enhancing quality of life for patients all over the world.
To be truly successful in this aspect of our mission, we must fulfill
another critical calling – education of the researchers and clinicians
of tomorrow and today.
With that in mind, the UCLA Division of Digestive Diseases is proud to
offer two major education programs back to back – what we refer to as
UCLA GI Week. On March 12, 2015, the Center for Ulcer Research and
Education (CURE) Annual Research Meeting and Poster Session will
be held. This day-long meeting is comprised of lecture presentations
and an extensive poster session which prominently features the work
of young investigators. This is a non-CME program held on the UCLA
campus (see page 8).
The rest of that week – March 13-15, 2015 – we are delighted to
present the 3rd Annual UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology and
Hepatology Symposium. Whereas the CURE meeting showcases
the latest in scientific discovery, the UCLA-Mellinkoff Symposium
represents two-and-a-half days of approaches and solutions that
physicians can readily integrate into their daily practices. This CMEaccredited course will be held at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, CA.

The 3rd Annual UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology and
Hepatology Symposium will be centered upon a series of
directed lectures and illustrative cases devoted to providing
a road map and understanding of the most up-to-date means
by which to address perplexing management decisions for
our patients. The agenda has been specifically designed to
offer practical approaches that healthcare professionals may
readily integrate into their daily practice. Following completion
of this program, participants should be able to:
1. Incorporate novel IBD treatment strategies into
clinical practice
2. C hoose appropriate testing and treatment strategies
for esophageal and gastric disorders including Barrett’s
esophagus and gastroparesis
3. D iscuss common problems and issues related to disorders of
the colon and their evaluation and management to conform
with current national guidelines
4. Demonstrate enhanced procedural skill when managing
gastrointestinal bleeding
5. U tilize current evidence-based practices to diagnose and
treat pancreatic disorders
6. Recognize and manage endoscopic complications
7. Manage patients with chronic liver disease

T he hands-on session will provide
a valuable learning opportunity,
though no CME credit will be issued
to participants. It will feature up
to seven stations demonstrating
diverse endoscopy procedures,
technologies and techniques using
ex-vivo pig stomachs and/or other
available models.
The topics include the use of endoscopic mucosal resection,
retrieval of difficult foreign bodies and food impactions,
oncologic endoscopy, treatment for Barrett’s esophagus,
closure of perforations, dealing with fistulas, control of
bleeding and more.
Faculty with expertise in each of these areas will supervise
and mentor the attendees. The hands-on session is limited in
its number of participants. Separate registration is required
on a first-come, first-served basis.

The UCLA-Mellinkoff Gastroenterology
and Hepatology Symposium is named
after a passionate advocate for medical
education and a highly respected
clinician-teacher who continues to serve
as emeritus dean and emeritus professor
of medicine at the David Geffen School
of Medicine at UCLA.
In 1962, Dr. Mellinkoff was asked by thenChancellor Franklin Murphy to serve as dean of the UCLA School
of Medicine. For the next 24 years, he would oversee a period of
remarkable growth and development during which the school
secured an international reputation for both medical education and
research. By the time he retired in 1986, Dr. Mellinkoff had held his
position longer than any other active medical school dean in the
country and had earned the nickname “Dean of Deans.”
From the beginning, Dr. Mellinkoff was cherished for his
commitment to medical education. In both 1961 and 1962, UCLA’s
medical students presented him with the Golden Apple Award
as the faculty member most respected as a clinical teacher. Two
decades later, he received the Abraham Flexner Award from
the Association of American Medical Colleges, one of its most
prestigious awards, and was invited to present the 1982 Alan Gregg
Lecture. At UCLA, the Sherman M. Mellinkoff Faculty Award was
established in 1979 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the medical
school. The award honors the ideal in doctor-patient relationships
and medical education. Because of the high esteem in which
Dr. Mellinkoff is held, it is considered by the faculty to be the
highest honor of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA.

Complimentary parking will be provided in Lot PSV. There will be an
attendant at the gate to provide parking permits.

$100 – Non-UCLA Physicians
Complimentary – UCLA Physicians, Fellows and Residents
Fee includes registration, breakfast, breaks and lunch.
