First Penance (Confession) and First Communion
In preparation of the sacraments First Penance (Confession) and First Communion, there will be religion classes
that will start in the new year. Children must be in grade two or higher and baptised. Both sacraments are
received in the same year. The children will receive their First Penance (Confession) first, and then their First
Communion.
Parents/Guardians interested in registering their child for religion classes, please contact Colin Bernard at (902)
895-9468 or e-mail [email protected]. The information you will need to provide is your contact
information (phone/cell number/email), the full name of child, date of birth, and baptism location/date.
If you have a child not baptised, but are interested in having your child receive this sacrament, please contact
Colin to make baptism arrangements.

continue to keep the hall, clean, neat and tidy. Please try to book your event early, preferably a minimum of 2
weeks in advance.
Compost, Garbage & Recyclables (blue bags)
CLEAR GARBAGE BAGS ARE A MUST.
That means only one black garbage bag (privacy bag) per week, the rest must be in clear bags. Recycle items
(containers and paper) must be in blue bags. If you do not have a compost bin please call Elizabeth Paul at the
Health Centre. There are some of the small kitchen containers available now.
Garbage is picked up every week.
Compost bin dates are Tuesday, February 3 & 17.
Blue Bags dates are Tuesday, February 10 & 24.
All items must be at curb side by 7:00 am.

Millbrook has worked out a corporate rate with the Rath Eastlink Community Centre. Corporate Memberships
apply to yearly membership only. The Civic Centre is not located on the reserve, Taxes are applied to the cost.
The Band Member must purchase the Membership first then submit the receipts to Priscillia Martin. The Tobacco
Store covers $300 per activity(see regulations online at millbrookfirstnation.net).

Family swim starts this Sunday at the R.E.C.C. Family swim is continuing every Sunday from 1 pm-2pm.
Sunday Morning Ice Time
Sunday morning Ice times at the R.E.C.C. are Sunday, February. 1, 8, 15 & 22 from 8:00 am - 9:00 am.
Millbrook 3-D Shooters
Millbrook Archery Club has target practice every Wednesday night.
Wednesday’s time is 6 pm till close and Sunday 1pm-6pm. Everyone is welcome.
Millbrook Fitness Centre
The Millbrook Fitness Centre is open 1pm-4pm Monday to Friday.
It is open in the evenings from 6pm-10pm Sunday to Thursday.
Exercising a few times a week is a great way to improve your overall health.
Much Music Dance
There will be a Much Music dance on Friday Feb. 13 from 7 to 11pm all ages. Everyone is welcome,
“Be The One”
On Friday, February 13 Much Music will be at the Millbrook Gym at 4pm to put
on a presentation called “Be The One”. This will follow with pizzas & drinks all

Sober & Drug Free Motivational talk
Savvy Simon will be at the Millbrook Community Hall on Thursday February19 at
6pm to do a Motivational talk about how good life is been staying "Sober & Drug"
free, and what you can achieve in life. This talk is open to all students grade 5 &
up and to all parents. There will be great door prizes to win such as family movie
nights, & lots of gift cards. Also refreshment will be served. She will hoodies For

Counselling:
Charles Casselman a Clinical Therapist from the Truro office of Addiction Services. He is available at the Health
Centre every Monday for one on one counselling before and after Addictions Treatment Programs. Follow-up
Counselling after successful completion of a treatment program is highly recommended to deal with the
challenges of RECOVERY. Counselling by this clinical therapist is also provided for family members of the
addict/alcoholic and others affected by addictions. Please call the Health Centre at(902-895-9468) for an
appointment time to talk to Charles Casselman when he is in Millbrook. Or you may choose to see him at his

DROP OFF / PICK UP ZONE
The school is experiencing problems in the front of the school with speeders driving past the school. The local
policing Liaison Officer will be monitoring the drop off zone. Please be careful when dropping off and picking
up students that you are no blocking the accessible parking spots directly located at the top of the drop off loop.
Also a reminder, this is a drop off zone, not a Parking Zone.
AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS
Please try and make all after school arrangements BEFORE school. If you cannot reach the classroom teacher in
the case of an emergency call Shelley at 899-2415 or Lisa at 986-5010.
PRACTICE
Please encourage you child/children to read and write as much as possible. And, remember to practice,
practice, practice those math facts.
MILK / RECESS
Please send a mid-morning snack for your child. There is a four hour wait from 8:00 to the first lunch at 11:50
and second lunch at 12:15. The school offers a Breakfast Program for all students however it is the parent’s
responsibility to send a snack in for Recess Break!

Don’t forget to keep a watch on the student information program, it is a great tool to view your child’s progress
in school. Here you can look at your child’s report card format of current marks, assignments, attendance, and
much more. You can go to www.ccrsb.ca site and under the parent tab click PowerSchool Portal Sign-in. Here
you can create an account using the username and password provided last year. If you do not have the
username and password, you can contact the school and they will provide you with one.

On January 9th, we had special guests come in to visit with our First Nation students. Thank you to Mrs. Googoo
for arranging motivational speaker Savannah Simon (L’nusi It’s that Easy), Nathalie Restoule (Dream Big Star),
and the Dream Big crew come in to our school! Also would like to thank the Samqwan Boys for their wonderful
performance.
On January 20th, we went on a field trip to the 8th Annual NSCC Mawi’omi’. All the grade 6 students as well as
Grade 7, 8, & 9 Mi’kmaq Classes enjoyed the Mawi’omi’ which seems to be growing in popularity each year!

8 Social Studies – We are starting a new unit on Decades of Change. There are 7 chapters to this unit, in each
chapter the students will take notes, do photo essay, Power Point Presentation and Webquest questions, as well
at end of each unit there will be a chapter test.
8 Science – The students just completed the Cells, Tissues, Organs and Systems unit and have moved on to the
“Fluids Unit.”
6 Math – The students have completed the order of operation section and are now onto graphing.
6 ELA – Ask your child about books they have written and illustrated! They were interesting stories.
6 Science – Students are currently studying the Flight unit.

This month I want to challenge all our students to practice their math facts with their families. Make it a fun,
family game of cards, check out one of the many online math games or practice writing them out. Students,
knowing your multiplication facts will not only strengthen your skills but make your new math easier to
understand. If any students want help practicing them I would love to help and have the First Nations Learning
Centre open during your lunch.

Happy Millbrook Winter Carnival!
Parents/Guardians please ask your son/daughter about Power School and or our new updated homework
website which is part of the TJHS website. It is a great way to check what students have for homework on any
given day and it also lists assignments, labs, quizzes, projects and tests.
At the beginning of January, grade 9 students start to consider which courses at CEC they would take in grade
10. Every year I collect the grade 9 Millbrook students grade 10 CEC Course Selection sheets, review them with
the students, help them input their chosen courses into CEC’s Registrar’s program. Students will enter this data
on Thursday February 13, 2015. It is imperative that the students are here on that day to input their choices into
the computer. If they are not here they run the RISK of not getting a few courses they want to take.
By now all parents should have seen a copy of their child’s 3 YEAR PLAN for CEC. If any parents have any
questions about their teenagers Grade 10 course selections, I encourage you to call me at 896-5550.
If any grade 8 or 9 parent(s) have any questions or concerns about their child’s academic achievement please

Scholarships & Bursaries
There are many scholarships and bursaries available specifically for First Nations students. As the deadlines for
these scholarships are approaching students will be notified. Students are also encouraged to check with
Student Services about other available scholarships.

Post-Secondary
It’s never too early to start applying! Many universities will provide a conditional acceptance to students in good
standing. NSCC is also encouraging grade 11 students to begin applying because many of their programs are in
high demand. Students planning on going to NSCC should contact Carley Gloade as soon as possible to apply
for funding.
Students planning on attending university in the fall should contact Barry Gloade as soon as possible as well.
CCRSB ATTENDANCE POLICY
The CCRSB Policy states that a high school student may lose credit for a course if they are not present in class for
at least 80% of the course, or they miss 19 classes.
The teacher will phone home after 6 absences, and the Vice Principals will follow up with a letter at 10, 16 and
19 absences.
MILLBROOK SUMMER EMPLOYMENT ATTENDANCE POLICY - SUMMARY
The purpose of the Millbrook Summer Employment Program is for eligible students to gain work experience and
skill development in various areas of employment.
Eligible students will be Millbrook Band Members who live on the Millbrook Reserves, that are in Grade 10 or
above, are over 15 years of age and under 26 years of age, who attended school for the entire school year (unless
more than 20 school days, and can provide
verification from the school you plan to return to FULL TIME in the fall, are eligible to apply.

15th APC Fisheries Workshop and Awards Banquet
Exemplary Conduct and Workplace Safety
The award for Exemplary Conduct and Workplace Safety is not given out every year
but it’s meant to recognize individuals who go above and beyond when it comes to
safety. The award this year goes to a community who spent the year going through
safety and maintenance audits, developing customized maintenance programs and
going through the ‘Safest Catch’ safety management program on each of their
vessels. What stood out to the trainers working the crew was how actively the crew
participated and how they were taking ownership of the safety and maintenance on
board of their vessels.
Winner: Millbrook Fisheries
Fleet Manager of the Year
The winner of this year’s Fleet Manager of the year is known for his many community service activities and
efforts he engages in to support the community outside of his role as fleet manager. His work ethic is in high
demand, he organizes activities ranging from Search and Rescue to Kid’s Camps. He is tireless in his efforts to
support other people, and in his fisheries work insists on the highest standards of safety. His Commitment to
safety and his work advancing his fisheries safety program is part of the reason we’ve already seen him up here
tonight.

NSCC Pre-Trades Graduation
January 16, 2015, 11 Community Members graduated from NSCC Pre-trade program. This program was brought
to the Community making it easier for students to show up daily. Thanks to Carley Gloade Millbrook’s Native
Employment Officer for getting the program started; KMKNO and Nova Scotia Aboriginal Employment
Partnership for providing the funding to make this program possible. Thanks to Justine Maloney for the Case
Management and NSCC Staff for all their hard work.

Evolution Motorsports Truro Power Centre Latest Addition
Since 2007, Entrepreneurs' Chad and Chris Felix have built Evolution Motorsports by providing the Maritimes
with quality, affordable off road vehicles for the whole family. Evolution Motorsports has tried and tested
available brands and have secured exclusive dealer distribution rights to brands of ATVs, Dirt Bikes, Dune
Buggies, Electric and Gas Scooters, parts and accessories because they provide the highest quality to price ratio.
In 2007, the Felix brothers began by striking a deal with the Halifax Shopping Centre to sell off road vehicles
from a kiosk in the mall during the last two shopping weeks before Christmas. Having borrowed 10k to
purchase inventory, all inventory sold in little over a week and the decision was made to sell product from their
garage for the next year. The following Christmas, Evolution Motorsports was fortunate enough again to have a
spot in the Halifax Shopping Centre and sales tripled.
In order to better understand product pricing, availability and quality, the Felix brothers travelled to Guangzhou,
China to attend the Canton Fair, the largest exhibition of manufactured products in the world. Out of the many
brands that were represented at the trade show, they selected a core line up that offered both the quality and
affordability the Felix brothers were looking for which was a great alternative to name brand off road vehicles
such as Yamaha, Honda or Kawasaki.
There are a large number of families in the Maritimes that simply cannot afford a $3500 ATV for their child, and
even more so $10,000 plus for adult size. With Evolution Motorsports line up of off road vehicles a family of
four could have two adult size and two youth size ATVs for as little as $5900 complete with a 12 month
warranty. This price range significantly increases the customer demographic for off road sports and is a great
way to get outside and participate in an exciting activity for the whole family.
Evolution Motorsports has grown from a small back yard operation to having the opportunity to construct a new
flagship store located on the Truro Power Centre in Millbrook, Nova Scotia. Our company which is 100 %
Aboriginal owned and operated was created by slowly building a customer base, increasing sales and pinching
every penny to do so.
"It has taken us a lot of work to get to this point and we are really excited for the new facility...we look forward
to serving all our current customers and welcome all potential new customers to stop by and see what we are
all about." Says Chad Felix, who has almost 20 years of sales experience. Our grand opening will be sometime in
March, and will feature new lines of ATV's and Dirt bikes with great deals to be made.
Evolution Motorsports is expanding product lines, growing an already busy parts department and providing
excellent customer service for when maintenance is needed. Also offered is a massive selection of accessories
such as helmets, protective gear, and clothing.
In the coming months Evolution Motors will introduce used cars to our product line and offer a full range of
services. Our new website being developed for Evolution Motorsports will incorporate product videos, repair

The Start-Up 100
The Sobey School of Business Development Centre at Saint Mary’s University and the Government of Nova
Scotia are partnering with the Town of Truro to launch a new program called The Start-Up 100. This program
will partner young entrepreneurs with business mentors and focuses on creating 100 new ventures across Nova
Scotia. The project is coordinated and administered by the Sobey School of Business Development Centre in
partnership with Enactus Saint Mary’s and will consist of entrepreneurial youth from 50 communities across the
province.
Youth who participate will be provided with the resources and opportunities to start their own businesses. The
foundation of the project will allow the participants to develop entrepreneurial interests, gain real life
experience, and access resources and information to prepare them for running their own businesses.
As part of this program, youth will be partnered with business mentors in their communities who are able to
provide advice and to share their own real world experiences for what it takes to start a successful business. The
participants will also join a network of 99 other youth participants from across Nova Scotia, learn from wellestablished university curriculum and tools, take part in a flagship program to add to their resume, and
experience personal growth, leadership, business skills advancement, entrepreneurship and leadership. Best part is it’s FREE for participants and a great learning experience for any students who have entrepreneurial
interests!
In order to be eligible to participate, youth must be:

Be 15-35 years of age (special circumstances may be accepted), and

Be a resident of Nova Scotia for 6 months prior to applying.

2014-’15 high school assembly
As we look around the world, we need more leaders, and people who are more responsible! When
you’re young, it’s often “all about me” every day. This self-serving indulgence leads to many bad
habits and decisions. These days, we have bullying, drug use, texting and driving, violence, and
academic apathy pulling down the lives of so many youth. To generate the most powerful changes
possible, young people will have to lead the way and be empowered to act.
Be The DREAM – The world is in need of new dreamers, creators, pioneers…people who will bolt
off into the unknown and discover the wonders of tomorrow. Dreamers don’t settle for the plain
and ordinary. They push for greatness. Today, many young people are playing it safe, not challenging themselves or going beyond the minimum. Life becomes exciting when you go beyond the
norm, raise your limits, and stretch your capacities. When you ‘overcome the present’ and ‘push
into the future,’ you become inspirational.
Be The CHANGE – The world is in need of some major changes. From too few jobs, too unstable
climates, to too much bullying, drugs, and violence, we need change. But there’s too much talk
and not enough action. There are rallies for awareness but not plans being built to guide the
change process. It comes from you leading the charge, demonstrating how society can be led into
a better direction. As the saying goes, “be the change that you want to see in the world.”
Be The ONE – The world is in need of new thinkers, collaborators and leaders. We need people
who know how to work together and produce far greater results. But, to be that kind of person
these days, you need an incredible sense of responsibility and character. Too often, for too many
people, it’s “all about me.” You can be someone who puts others first, who puts the whole community first. Think ‘what will move everyone forward?’
Now is the time for stepping up and leading the way. Overcome your fear and doubt. Like the saying goes, ‘you miss 100% of the shots you never take.’ So, let’s encourage more involvement and
creative change. Make this the greatest generation of youth ever! You can reach out to the lost
and lonely, the discouraged and abused, and make their lives better. We need a new kind of leader, one who will champion all people, celebrate all people, and bring out the best in all people. Will
you step up and be that kind of person? Bring us hope…BE THE ONE!
