Houghton Wesleyan Church Highlights Joyfully loving God, wholeheartedly serving others February 2015 Volume 47, No. 9 A Presence of Hope in a World of Despair Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. (Isaiah 60:1-3) In this country, February is a time to think about two of our greatest presidents, to reflect on the historic and current contributions of African-Americans, and to express our love for those most precious to us. In our church, February has become the time when we think about the ways in which we touch the world—the world around us, the world far from us and the world in-between. This emphasis on the world is not intended to free us from thinking about others at other times, but rather to help us focus more intently so that we are ever more aware and involved in the world all the time. When I think about the world today I feel a sense of despair. The expansive presence of war, violence and terrorism makes me wonder if there is any hope of peace. When I contemplate the millions of Christians who are regularly opposed, threatened or persecuted for their faith, I feel overwhelmed with grief and desperation about not only their struggle but the growing reality that their experiences may soon be ours. When I ponder that there are upwards of 50 million refugees in the world right now, that almost 5,000 people have died from Ebola, that 35 million people worldwide are currently living with HIV/AIDS, including 3.2 million children and that the vast majority of these people live in low- and middle-income countries, particularly sub-Saharan Africa, and that more than 800 million people don’t have enough food, I get awfully discouraged about the future of our world. When I realize that there are about 5 billion people in the world who have no relationship with Jesus Christ, my heart aches. Quite frankly, I don’t really like to think about all of this and all of these people and yet it’s the reality of our world. Nevertheless, despite the sobering and agonizing statistics, we are people of hope. We have hope not because these statistics aren’t true or because we live in denial, but because we still believe that the risen Christ is at work and that God’s people are still called to be light in the darkness of our world. Sometimes we can become so overwhelmed by the bad news, we forget the good news—that Jesus is greater than the power of evil, that he has conquered all, that he fills the Church with his Spirit to be witnesses of grace and truth, and that what we do makes a difference because he is in it. It’s the truth of Christ that fills us with hope and why we care about others and involve ourselves in being agents of Christ with others. Our Missions Convention (February 2-8) is an opportunity for you to think about the whole world. We will present ministry opportunities that are near to us and opportunities that are far from us. We will be reminded that our God is still Lord of all and that his message of love and hope in Christ will never fail. I hope that you will participate in as many activities as possible. Many of the events are intended for families as well as adults and youth. Our goal is to make God’s work of hope more visible so that we will give glory to God and open our hearts to the continued work of his Spirit in and through us. I encourage you to mark these days and times and together let’s see what God will do. IS FEBRUARY 15 In February our focus will be on the Nune people. Our guest speaker is Dr. Don Little who will help us understand a little more about the area we call Nuneland. We will take an offering for the Wesleyan Native American Ministries to help them buy a van for transporting children to church. Three 80-something ladies, who live alone in their own homes and no longer drive, are so glad we pick them up each Thursday to grocery shop, get prescriptions from the pharmacy, and do their banking. They especially enjoy time to socialize with their contemporaries over a hot lunch at the Fillmore firehall. These three gals come from two neighboring villages, and are getting to know each other. How delightful, a few weeks ago, to see the two in the back seat each help the other snap her seat belt. We need more volunteers to cover all the Thursdays. Could you help drive, or ride as assistant? Time: 10:30am--1:30pm (at the latest), any Thursday you are available. Involves driving to Caneadea and Fillmore, helping the ladies in and out of the vehicle, eating lunch with the folks at the firehall. This trio of ladies would love your help! Be sure to take advantage of the many resources for the season displayed throughout the church library. One of these is Devotional Classics edited by Richard J. Foster. It features writings from Christians throughout the ages such as Augustine, Pascal, Francis of Assisi, Bonhoeffer, Julian of Norwich, Martin Luther, Kierkegaard, and Calvin. Several interesting new non-fiction books were recently added to the collection. The book Dangerous Surrender, by Kay Warren (Rick Warren’s wife), tells of her struggle to accept God’s calling to help AIDS victims. In When Your World Falls Apart, renowned pastor, teacher and author David Jeremiah shares the comfort and hope of the Psalms, showing how these truths can guide you through life's greatest challenges. You will read inspiring real-life stories of people who struggled with terminal illness, the loss of a child or the imprisonment of a spouse. He also reveals how the Psalms sustained him during his own battle with cancer. The Lord is My Shepherd: Resting in the Peace and Power of Psalm 23 by Pastor Robert Morgan includes true stories and verse-by-verse explorations that uncover the rich blessings of God's time-tested promises to help us experience true rest. Arriving too late for Christmas, but a wonderful read any time of the year, is a new children’s picture book, Christmas Day in the Morning written by Pearl S. Buck, and illustrated by Mark Buehner. It tells the beautiful tale of a young man growing up on a farm who wants to get his hard-working father a gift for Christmas, something that shows how much he really loves him. But it's Christmas Eve, and he doesn't have any money to spend. What could he possibly get? Suddenly, he thinks of the best gift of all… New DVDs in the library include the entire Little House on the Prairie TV series plus a bonus collector’s edition, and Focus on the Family’s Irreplaceable, a defense of the traditional family. Please stop by and enjoy all our library has to offer. Dear Friends at Houghton Wesleyan Church, It has been almost a year since Bonnie left us for heaven. Rarely does an hour go by that we do not have at least a brief thought of her. Please continue to pray for us as we miss Bonnie very much. You have been a tremendous blessing to us in so many ways. The dedication of the Children’s Library in honor of Bonnie was extremely special. The colorful African theme, the focus on Christ, the playful expressions of stuffed animals, and the cozy, comfortable place to read truly reflect Bonnie’s life. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of our lives and Bonnie’s as you have prayed for us. May God bless you and always keep you in His loving care. With love in Christ, Jim & Karen Szymanski Page 7 Congratulations to Kevin and Barb Raymond on the birth of Griffin Lee on December 31. He joins big sister Evelyn and big brother Dawson. We would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of love shown to our family after (Gertrude "Polly" Lytle) Mom died on November 21, 2014.
