Contemporary Pharmacy Practice

Speaker: Joseph V. Etzel, Pharm. D.
Dr. Etzel is Assistant Dean for Pharmacy Student Affairs and Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the College of
Pharmacy & Health Sciences, St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY. He has been the primary investigator as well as co-investigator
in many research studies and has authored and co-authored numerous published articles. Dr. Etzel has also practiced in
independent community and hospital pharmacies.
Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this knowledge-based activity, the participant will be able to:






Define “medication error” and discuss its prevalence in current practice.
List the major underlying causes of medication errors and give examples of each.
Explain how cognitive bias can result in errors in routine pharmacy functions.
Provide examples of how changes in the labeling of medications may result in fewer errors.
Discuss how technology has been implemented to improve patient safety and discuss its impact on error occurrence.
Provide recommendations to avoid errors given specific case simulations.
