What do you get out of doing American Idol
that you don’t get from being a performer
yourself? I did a few of these types of shows
as a contestant when I was very young. When
I was 9, I went on a show called Pot of Gold.
Then there was The Have a Go Show and
Stairway to the Stars. My parents thought
they were a good place for me to get a leg up
career-wise and also get advice. So I have a lot
of empathy for the Idol contestants.
Will your wife and daughters watch at home?
Yes. They watch like everybody else does and
either respond to someone or they don’t,
and I’m interested in that because we judges
can get myopic sometimes, being in the
middle of it all. It’s great to get a totally fresh
perspective. I often ask Nic what she thinks of
various people, who she likes and why.
If your daughters want to pursue a show biz
career, are you OK with that? I’m of the belief
that everybody’s got a calling, and
if that is what you’re here to do,
nobody’s going to take you off
that path. If our girls have a real
aptitude to do anything, we’re
going to support that, but they
also have to know that there’s work
involved in it.
Can you talk about how people
stepped up for you following the
sudden death of Nicole’s father last
September? I can’t even describe
what that moment was like for our
family. I was very, very close to
Nic’s dad. I was scheduled to do
two days of shooting Idol, and
it was an amazing thing that

How can I keep my kids from becoming couch
potatoes when it’s cold outside?
The key to keeping your children moving
during winter: Limit screen time. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than two hours a day for most children and
none for those younger than 2. When the kids have powered down,
here are some ways to keep them active:
Focus on fun. Instead of simply taking a walk, make it a game. Count
the number of birds you see, or look for animal tracks. Seek out
cold-weather activities such as ice skating and sledding.
Make it a family affair. It’s much easier to get kids to participate when
the entire family does something together. Younger children especially should see parents moving each day.
Move it indoors. For days when going outside isn’t an option, try jump
ropes, hula hoops, hopping on one foot, exercise balls or community
recreation centers to get exercise.
Encourage sports or other activities. If team sports aren’t for your
kids, they might enjoy karate or dance. Whatever the choice, children
of all ages need at least 30 minutes of high-energy activity every day.

Four easy ways to protect your important data
“People are using their computers to download e-books, view Netflix,
and because of that, there’s a higher risk that data or the systems
might crash,” says Thomas Cullen, director of computing services for
Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Computer Science in Pittsburgh.
THE SOLUTION: Make frequent backups and store them in a location
separate from your computer. Here are three easy ways:
USB drive. Also called a thumb drive, this plugs in
to your computer’s USB port. It’s convenient, fast and
easy to carry but it’s also easy to lose or damage.
External hard drive. This holds more data than
a thumb drive. It connects directly to your computer
and may require installing and configuring the software that comes with it.
Internet-based service. Online storage
services such as Carbonite, iCloud and the photo
sharing site Shutterfly can store unlimited amounts of
data and allow you to access your files from anywhere
over the Internet. There usually are monthly or annual

CAJUN RICE CASSEROLE
½ lb bacon, chopped
1 large onion, chopped
2 (16-oz) cans diced tomatoes
undrained
1 (10-oz) can tomatoes and
green chiles
½ lb okra, trimmed and
sliced ¼-inch thick
9 Tbsp chopped fresh parsley
¼ tsp garlic salt
¼ tsp onion salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 cups hot cooked long-grain rice
1. Cook bacon in a large skillet over
medium heat, stirring often, until
crisp, about 8 minutes. Remove
bacon, and drain on paper towels,
reserving drippings in pan. Add
onion, and cook, stirring often, until
tender and golden, about 5 minutes.
2. Add diced tomatoes and chiles
and next 5 ingredients; bring to
a boil. Reduce heat, and simmer
over low heat, stirring occasionally,
45 minutes. Serve over rice, and
sprinkle with reserved bacon.
Serves 6 to 8.
