See inside for details. This Year’s Program Includes the Following Guest Speakers: U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson (R-OH) Inderber S. Gill, MD Raoul S. Concepcion, MD, FACS Courtenay K. Moore, MD J. Stuart Wolf, Jr., MD M A R K YO U R C A L E N DA R S A N D M A K E P L A N S T O J O I N U S PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE The Ohio Urological Society (OUS) Board of Directors has been hard at work planning the 2015 Annual Spring Meeting. This event is the highlight of the year for the society and offers an opportunity for our members, residents, visiting speakers and corporate partners to get together and learn something new about urology. Much thought and effort have gone into the planning. While attendance has been stable in recent years, our goal is to try to grow the society and make it an appealing meeting for all urologists in Ohio to attend. Thus, we have attempted to incorporate as much feedback as possible into the planning of this year’s program. This will be the first year that a live surgery will be broadcasted at the meeting, thanks to Secretary Ronney Abaza’s expertise in robotic surgery. The meeting will be held in downtown Columbus at the Renaissance Hotel March 20 – 21, 2015. Unfortunately the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets will be out of town that weekend, but the NCAA Basketball 2nd and 3rd rounds will be underway and provide a diversion in the evening for those interested. The nearby Arena District (http://arenadistrict.com/events) also provides many dining and entertainment options, as does the Short North (http://www.shortnorth.org). I look forward to seeing you all here in Columbus this spring. Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns regarding the Ohio Urological Society. Bodo E. Knudsen, MD, FRCSC OUS President Visit the OUS website today at www.ousweb.org Dear colleagues and friends, I am very excited to share with you the wonderful program planned for this year’s Ohio Urological Society (OUS) 2015 Annual Spring Meeting to be held March 20 – 21, 2015 in Columbus. The OUS board has organized what promises to be one of our best meetings with a diversity of topics and speakers sure to benefit everyone, no matter their practice focus. Our program will begin on Friday evening with the welcome reception and an opportunity to mingle with colleagues and old friends from around the state. We will also have a short session Friday just before the reception to hear from elected officials on political and health care policies relevant to our membership. Also on Friday evening, there will be a moderated poster session where we will learn about the latest research our residents from around Ohio are working on. Our Saturday morning program will begin again this year with resident research presentations highlighting the best projects. We will then for the first time have a live surgical broadcast of a robotic surgery that will be moderated by one of our guest speakers, Dr. Inderbir Gill from the University of Southern California., with the opportunity for questions and real-time interaction between the audience in the meeting room and our team in the O.R. We are equally lucky to have with us this year Dr. J. Stuart Wolf, Jr., from the University of Michigan, who is our NCS visiting professor. He will be speaking about the management of small renal masses with an update on the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines that he was instrumental in forming. Dr. Wolf will then lead a panel discussion of challenging renal mass cases, along with Dr. *LOO and two of our OUS members with advanced training in renal tumor surgery, Dr. Daniel J. Ricchiuti of NEO Urology Associates and Dr. David S. Sharp of Ohio State University (OSU). After our Industry Sponsored Lunch, Dr. Gill will present a selection of urology cases where things didn’t quite go as planned, which will be instructive for us to learn from others’ mistakes and to see how to handle and prevent disasters. Dr. Raoul S. Concepcion, of Urology Associates in Nashville, will be sharing with us the latest information about treatment of advanced prostate cancers, an increasingly important topic with the growing number of systemic agents available and shift to use by many urology groups prior to medical oncology referral. Finally, we will have several of our Ohio experts in female urology share their expertise with us, including a talk by Dr. Courtenay K. Moore, of Cleveland Clinic, about surgical options for refractory overactive bladder (OAB) and a panel discussion of challenging cases and the latest developments with Dr. Ketul K. Shah of OSU; Dr. Raymond A. Bologna from Akron; Dr. Ajay K. Singla of University of Toledo; and Dr. Ayman Mahdy of University of Cincinnati. I strongly encourage you all to join us in Columbus for what promises to be a great meeting! Please also invite your local colleagues and partners to come and participate in the OUS. Requests for hotel reservations must be submitted by 2/26/15 E D UC AT I ONAL NEED S & OBJECTIV E S Needs The diagnosis and management of urologic diseases carry with it the obligatory risk of medicinal or surgical complications. Pretherapeutic identification of those individuals at specific risk, as well as the early identification of these complications, and timely therapeutic intervention to treat them are imperative for the successful management of the disease as well as patient safety. Robotic surgery is a specialized field of urology that utilizes scopes and robotic instruments to access the urinary tract in a minimally invasive manner. Robotic and laparoscopic procedures are now common in urology. Knowledge regarding the best application of this technology, its unique risks to our patients, how to avoid or minimize those risks, and what to do when they do occur is essential. The use of this technology carries with it the risk of procedural-related illness. Knowledge of the risks and proper performance of robotic surgery is imperative. The management of renal masses can be complex and include surveillance, ablation and surgery as options. Identifying those patients best suited for each option is critical to providing safe, appropriate care. Additionally, the post-procedural issues that may arise should be recognized early and appropriate therapies chosen and implemented. Also, urologists should be aware of the American Urological Association (AUA) guidelines for renal masses. Urologists frequently treat diseases surgically. The use of procedures and surgeries is increasingly common. It is imperative that practicing urologists understand the risks and potential complications of various procedures as well as ways to minimize them. Use of systemic agents is increasingly being done by urology practices rather than early referral to medical oncology. The proliferation of new systemic agents and their particular side effects is complex and requires knowledge of these agents and their proper use. Medications are used as first-line therapy for overactive bladder (OAB), but surgical options become necessary or are preferred in some patients. Female incontinence and pelvic reconstruction is a subfield of urology with diverse pathology and challenges. There have been advances in these procedures that have brought many benefits and some new complications. The correct use of these procedures has improved the quality of life for many patients but patient selection, complication recognition and management can be complex and understanding these issues is paramount to patient care. Educational Objectives At the conclusion of the OUS 2015 Annual Spring Meeting, attendees should be able to: 1. Describe various techniques used in robotic surgery to maximize outcomes and minimize complications. 2. Identify global strategies for preventing the complications of advanced urologic procedures. 3. Explain the evaluation and management of renal masses and patient selection for surveillance, ablation and surgery. 4. Recognize the systemic agents used for advanced prostate cancer and their efficacy and side effects. 5. Identify surgical and other nonpharmacological options for managing OAB. 6. Apply medical and surgical options appropriately for managing complex female urology patient conditions. 7. Identify global strategies for preventing the complications of advanced urologic procedures.
