BLACK HISTORY MONTH A CENTURY OF BLACK LIFE, HISTORY AND CULTURE The theme for Black History Month in 2015 is "A Century of Black Life, History and Culture"; chronicling the important contributions by AfricanAmericans to art, literature, sports and pop culture. In the early 20th century, the rise of a totally new form of music -- jazz -can be traced back to African Americans of the post-World War I generation. This was closely followed by the Harlem Renaissance that introduced the voices of African American writers and artists to the national conversation. By the 1960's, the African American museum movement saw the opening of nationwide centers exhibiting the advances made by African Americans in art, history, and science -- culminating in the Smithsonian's National Museum of African American History and Culture. Week of FEBRUARY 1, 2015 Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns Senior Pastor Chief Editor [email protected] Sister Sheryl R. Smalls Editor [email protected] Doo wop, rock n' roll, and hip hop can all trace their roots to the African American experience. Legendary sports figures, as well as artists, musicians, actors and actresses also have undeniably contributed to American culture as their influence continues to spread worldwide. The Web is a great place to find out more about Black History – in poetry, literature, the arts, sciences, sports and entertainment – making Black History month a time of fun, celebration, and learning. Providing orderly parking assistance Where does worship begin at SCBC? Surprisingly, it actually begins with parking. Each and every Sunday, the Parking Ministry Team has the distinct opportunity to make a positive impression on our worshippers. This is the ministry team that influences every person who drives to our church. To regular attendees or members, they are the first to extend a warm, friendly greeting. To guests, they are a very important first impression of our church. The Parking Ministry exists to make SCBC a safer, more convenient place for people to fellowship and visit. In snow, rain, heat or gloom of night, our Parking Attendants are busy completing their appointed tasks. Their responsibilities include: ~Managing the flow of traffic by ushering cars into spaces in a safe and feasible manner ~Protecting the safety of our pedestrians ~Ensuring that handicapped parking areas are only used by people with required stickers or passes ~Providing easy access from the parking lot to the church building MEETINGS/REHEARSALS Tuesday, February 3rd CMLT Meeting, 6:00 p.m. Ministry Team Leaders, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 5th Combined Choirs, 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 6th Youth Choir, 6:30 p.m. Saturday, February 7th Musicians, 9:00 a.m. Praise Team, 10:00 a.m. Saturday Night Live 5:30 p.m. Sunday, February 8th Combined Choirs both services Calling ALL Teens. COME AND REST AWHILE Congregational Spirituality Corner To hear God call our name awes us. To consider facing such an experience without trembling knees is unthinkable. To stand before the One, the author of all that exists, stretches our imaginations to the breaking point. Then to have that One speak our name transforms and changes life. Jesus, too, heard the voice from heaven saying what he already knew. He was God’s beloved. What a wonderful message! To be the beloved child of the Creator. To know one is loved like that transforms and prepares us for anything. Perhaps that is why the Gospels tell us that Jesus left the baptismal service and God’s affirming voice to go into the desert to be tempted by Satan. Jesus prevailed because he remembered the voice; he remembered who he was and who was with him. The biblical record clearly affirms the fact that God knows us and calls us by name as well. We are not strangers or aliens to God. We are each and all God’s beloved. We have as our lover the Creator and Master of all that exists. The One who calls us beloved is also the one who knows us so intimately and well that even the number of hairs on our head is known. To remember who creates us and recreates, who calls us again and again, who knows us completely, and who loves us unconditionally is to be prepared, as Jesus was, for all that is to come. We need have no fear of today or anxiety about tomorrow. We belong to God who claims us as beloved children and holds us close in the embrace of strength and love. Listen and remember today that God calls your name and be transformed and sustained in all that awaits you. -By Rueben P. Each informative and thought provoking lesson will highlight the life changing achievements of the African American Christian which was made possible due to the strength of each hero’s Christian character. The Christian heroes of faith that we will study are male and female, married and single, from Africa and from the U. S., evangelists, a musician and a brain surgeon. Through their lives many themes will be explored to include racial injustice, social activism, and the importance of generosity, evangelism, worship and praise. It is the hope of the Kingdom Kidz Children Ministry leaders that learning about these individuals will bring an appreciation and awareness of the contributions made by African American Christian heroes while building a sense of pride that will inspire each child to leave a legacy of greatness for future generations. Join us each week as we study the lives of Samuel Morris (Evangelist from Africa), Amanda Smith (American Evangelist to the World), Thomas A. Dorsey (The Father of Gospel Music), Harriet Tubman (Conductor of the Underground Railroad), George Washington Carver (The Man Who Saved the South From Poverty), Mary McLeod Bethune (Teacher of Head, Hands, and Heart), and Ben Carson (the Surgeon They Called “Dummy”). “My hope for my children must be that they respond to the still, small voice of God in their own hearts.” Andrew Young Contact the church office at (757) 627-SCBC (7222) if any of the below items belong to you.
