Aviation/Travel and Tourism
Established in 1995, Wooddale High School’s
Aviation/Travel and Tourism Optional Program is an
innovative program that is the only one of its kind in
Tennessee. Qualified aviation, travel, and tourism
employees are in high demand, and Wooddale provides
students with the foundation they need to enter these
exciting career fields. The aerospace industry is one of
the nation’s primary employers of scientists and engineers. Likewise, Memphis is the center of the nation’s air
cargo operations and home of FedEx, which offers
many high-paying and high-tech jobs. Over 10 million
tourists visit Memphis annually and spend approximately
$3 billion, resulting in over 50,000 jobs in this area that
are connected to the tourism industry. Wooddale students graduate with the skills they need to succeed in
their chosen career path or to pursue post-secondary
studies in their field of interest.
The Aviation Program has an integrated aeronautics
curriculum that enhances the study of Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, with an
emphasis on preparing students for post-secondary education or training in the aviation industry. Students now
have access to the National Flight Academy (NFA)
Aviation Classroom Experience (ACE) at Wooddale.
This state-of-the-art training facility replicates the NFA
in Pensacola, FL, and includes flight and air traffic control simulators. It is one of 25 in the United States.
Seniors have the opportunity to work on their Private
Pilot's License and Aviation Maintenance Technician certification and take advantage of intern positions at
FedEx and Medtronic. Graduates of this program continue aviation training at area universities, a variety of
airlines, and in the military. Jeffrey Holmes, Coordinator
of the Aviation Program is the 2013/14 Shelby County
Schools High School Teacher of the Year.

Travel and tourism are integral parts of Wooddale’s
Optional Program. Thanks to our partners at Metropolitan
Memphis Hotel and Lodging Association, Metropolitan
Memphis Attractions Association, Memphis Convention and
Visitors Bureau, Hilton Worldwide, and Memphis Marriott
Downtown, students are able to “shadow” professionals,
serve as interns, and work closely with local tourism agencies. Travel and tourism students are also offered opportunities to volunteer at many tourist attractions throughout the
city.
College Preparatory
Wooddale’s College Preparatory Optional School curriculum is designed for students seeking a strong liberal arts
foundation. This program ensures that each student excels
in four Honors-level classes each school year (including
English, Math, and Science) and completes three units in
Social Studies, two units in a World Language, and one unit
in a Fine Arts class. In addition, students may earn college
credits during their junior and senior years through
Advanced Placement (AP) courses.
Dr. Kristie Ruddick, an outstanding AP Chemistry
teacher, has been recognized as a NASA Harriet P. Jenkins
Fellow and is a recipient of the Women’s Chemist Award
from the Eli Lilly Company.
