LONDON: Spanish
midfielder
David
Silva equalised as
Manchester
City
prevented Chelsea pulling eight points clear at the
Premier League summit in
a hard-fought 1-1 draw at
Stamford Bridge yesterday.
Manchester United climbed
into third place with a 3-1 win
over basement club Leicester at
Old Trafford.
The Foxes produced one of
the upsets of the season in coming from 3-1 down to beat United 5-3 when the teams last met
in September.
United will only be in the top
three briefly if Southampton regain third place by avoiding defeat at home to Swansea today
when Arsenal, also vying for a
top-four finish, face Aston Villa
at the Emirates.
Tottenham Hotspur completed a fine week with a 3-0 win
away to West Bromwich Albion
where Harry Kane scored twice
to take his tally for the season
to an impressive 20 goals.
Crystal Palace saw a run
of four successive wins in all
competitions since manager Alan Pardew arrived from
Newcastle end with a 1-0 home
loss to Everton.
Second-from-bottom Queens
Park Rangers’ dreadful away record continued as they suffered
a 3-1 defeat to former manager
Mark Hughes’s Stoke City.
Jermain Defoe scored his
first goal since returning to English football from Toronto as
he netted Sunderland’s second
in a 2-0 win at home to Burnley
n Chelsea’s Remy scores past City goalkeeper Joe Hart
after Connor Wickham put the
Black Cats ahead.
Yesterday’s early kick-off
saw John Carver enjoy his first
win as Newcastle boss after a
3-0 success away to Hull ended
a run of four games without a
victory since Pardew’s exit.
Loic Remy put Chelsea in
front in the 41st minute, but Silva touched in a shot from Sergio
Aguero four minutes later to keep
the defending champions five
points behind Jose Mourinho’s
side with 15 matches remaining.
Manuel Pellegrini’s City have
won only one of their last five
league games, but following
successive defeats by Arsenal
and Middlesbrough, they at least
prevented Chelsea from streaking
away into the distance.
Chelsea great Frank Lampard, sent on by City as a late
substitute, was afforded a warm
reception on what was likely to
prove his final appearance at
Stamford Bridge, and it was a
broadly positive afternoon for
the hosts.
While the sight of Willian
limping off late on was a concern, they coped well without
the suspended Diego Costa and
the injured Cesc Fabregas, and
remain very much on track for a
first league title since 2010.
With Costa beginning a
three-game ban for treading
on Liverpool’s Emre Can,
Mourinho plumped for the pace
of Remy over the battering-ram
qualities of Didier Drogba up
front, but it was City’s attackers
who showed their opponents a

Karim
Benzema
scored
twice as Real Madrid
thrashed Real Sociedad
4-1 at home yesterday without
the suspended Cristiano Ronaldo to ensure they remained top
of the Spanish league.
Sociedad defender Aritz
Elustondo headed in his first
goal for the Basque club 36 seconds into the match, but James
Rodriguez headed the hosts
level in the third minute and
Real never looked back.
Sergio Ramos scored in the
37th and Benzema made it 3-1
in the 53rd before he struck an
exquisite second goal in the 76th.
Ronaldo watched from the
stands at the Santiago Bernabeu
Stadium as he served the first of a
two-game ban for kicking a Cordoba player in the last round.
Real opened a four-point gap
over Barcelona before they host
Villarreal today. Real also have a
game in hand that they will play
against Sevilla on Wednesday.
David Moyes’ Sociedad displayed little of the verve they
relied on to overcome a 2-0
deficit and fight back for a stunning 4-2 victory over Real in
August, before Moyes’s arrival.
Only Geronimo Rulli’s goalkeeping spared Sociedad a
bigger defeat as Sociedad remained in 11th place and the
only team yet to win away in
the league this season.
Sociedad caught Madrid slow
to start the game as left back Yuri
Berchiche charged up the pitch to
win a corner kick, which Ruben
Pardo sent into the area for Elustondo to thump in.
But the European champions didn’t take long to respond
as Rodriguez slipped between
Sociedad’s pair of center backs
to head Marcelo’s pass into the
corner of the net.
Sociedad never looked steady
at the back, but they threatened
until forward Carlos Vela hurt his
right knee and had to substituted in the 17th. Rulli saved shots
from Benzema and Rodriguez
before turning back Benzema a
second time, only for Ramos to
put Real in front for good.

Inside the first minute, Jesus

Aguero gave Chelsea three

from Courtois and then rolling a
shot a foot wide after John Terry
failed to cut out a long ball.
