101CE Retailers
The Top
Slight Sales Uptick in Spite of Market, Margin Challenges
By Laura Spinale
T
he merchants listed in Dealerscope’s registry of the Top 101 CE retailers in the U.S. and
Canada sold $234.75 billion in consumer electronics in 2013, an increase of only 1.13
percent over the $232.12 billion sold in 2012.
The sluggish market is taking its toll on registry retailers, with powerhouse chains announcing layoffs and store closings. RadioShack is said to be planning to close about 1,100
stores. Sears Holding Corp., parent of Sears Roebuck, Kmart and Sears Canada, is planning
an array of money-saving moves. It is closing its Sears flagship in Chicago, and shuttering
under-performing Kmart outlets. In Canada, Sears has announced its plan to lay off more
than 2,200 workers and close three call centers. Even at the top of the registry, companies
aren’t immune to market vagaries. After announcing lower-than-hoped holiday sales, the
shares of No. 1-ranked Best Buy fell nearly 29 percent on a single day in January. Finally,
Walmart (ranked at #5) has announced plans to lay off 2,300 Sam’s Club employees.
Dealerscope researched large electronics retailers in the U.S. and Canada—as well

as hardware manufacturers selling direct to consumers—in order to devise its Top 101
registry. Information was gleaned from readily available sources including SEC filings,
corporate press releases, business databases and local press reports.
Dealerscope contacted each retailer, giving each the opportunity to confirm or contest
initial figures. Many confirmed sales estimates. However, some privately held companies
refused to disclose sales information. Other companies would not break out CE sales from
their overall merchandise mixes. Finally, some companies had no comment. In these cases,
Dealerscope chose to publish its best estimates. All sales listed are reported on a calendar
year—rather than fiscal year—basis. When listing CE sales, we included electronics sales
generated by companies’ corporate sales, as well as sales to governmental bodies and the
educational arena. To the best of our ability, we have excluded sales to regions other than
the U.S. and Canada. CE estimates include sales of pre-recorded media.
All sales and store count information should be considered Dealerscope estimates.

before being taken private in 2007, went public
again in June.
Store counts represents RadioShack’s company
and dealer owned stores and wireless kiosks. The
significant year-to-year drop in store count is due
to RadioShack ending its relationship with Target,
and closing its kiosks in those stores. The company

Detroit, MI; Philadelphia, and other locations.
Store counts and sales represent Best Buy, Future
