We are “ETSU”
The ETSU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics would like
to ask both the print and broadcast media to honor our request to be called “ETSU” ... East Tennessee State University
in first reference is acceptable, but subsequent references
should be ETSU ... On TV graphics please use ETSU ... Our
nickname is the Buccaneers, but Bucs is also acceptable.
Buc bits
The ETSU men’s basketball program enjoyed a solid campaign in 2013-14, winning 19 games on the year and earning a berth into the CollegeInsider.com Tournament ... The
trip to the CIT marked the sixth postseason trip for the Bucs
in head coach Murry Bartow’s 11 seasons at ETSU (three
NCAAs, one NIT and two CIT trips) ... In addition, the Bucs
enjoyed a first round postseason tournament victory over
Lipscomb in a thrilling double overtime game, while also
giving Florida Gulf Coast a scare in the tournament semifinals in Fort Myers, Fla. ... ETSU went on to defeat longtime
rival and newly-renewed conference foe Chattanooga in the
first round of the CIT at the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center ...
The key to success for the Bucs in 2013-14 was the play
of an impressive backcourt and that group will return this
year led by rising seniors Rashawn Rembert (Tampa) and
Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.), along with rising junior Lester
Wilson (Knoxville) ... While that trio will be back to lead the
Bucs, the team will also return starters A.J. Merriweather
(Jackson) and Petey McClain (Mobile, Ala.) this season ...
One major area of concern for the Bucs will be the frontcourt, as the team lost all of its contributors from a year
ago ... Along with the loss of senior Ron Giplaye (Lowell,
Mass.) to a knee injury earlier this season, sophomore
Isaac Banks, and newcomers such as senior Alex Bates
(Greenbelt, Md.), junior Tommy Williams and freshman
Karl Overstreet (Lynchburg, Va.) are left to make up for
those losses on the inside ... Other players who are expected
to contribute this season include sophomore guard Devin
Harris (Tampa, Fla.), who showed great potential at the
end of last season, and freshman guard Desonta Bradford
(Humboldt), who was a Mr. Basketball selection during his
senior year of high school.
The series vs. Furman
The Bucs and Paladins have a long history dating back to
1962, with most of the games played during ETSU’s previous tenure in the SoCon ... In all, ETSU leads the series
24-23 and has won the last two meetings ... The Bucs last
enjoyed an 87-84 win over Furman on March 2, 2005 in the
first round of the SoCon Tournament.
Last time out vs. Furman
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (March 2, 2005) -- East Tennessee
State University junior guard Tim Smith (Newport News,
Va.) scored a game-high 37 points and matched his career
high for 3-point goals with five, leading the Buccaneers to
an 87-84 win over Furman in the first round of the Southern
Conference Tournament at McKenzie Arena. ... With the win,
ETSU, the No. 5 seed from the North Division, improved to
10-18 on the year and earned a quarterfinal matchup with
Chattanooga. ... The Bucs got off to a quick start, as junior
guard Ben Rhoda (Dayton, Ohio) grabbed the opening tip
and raced to a layup on the other end. From there, the Bucs
led the rest of the first half and built a lead of as many
as nine points. While Rhoda sparked the offense initially,
Smith powered the ETSU engine the rest of the half, scoring
21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, as the Bucs
led 45-40 at the intermission. ... In the second half, ETSU
continued to build its advantage, leading by as many as 11
points at 72-61 with 9:11 remaining in the contest. However,
Furman came charging back behind the play of sophomore
guard Robby Bostain and senior forward Ben Earle. Bostain
scored all of his 16 points in the second half, while Earle hit

Last time out
SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Jan. 24, 2015) – The ETSU men’s basketball team
overcame a large second half deficit, but the rally fell short as Wofford
held off the Buccaneers 72-64 in Southern Conference play Saturday
evening inside Benjamin Johnson Arena. ... Trailing by as many as 21
midway through the second half, the Bucs (12-7, 6-4 SoCon) cut the
Terriers’ lead to four twice in the final 1:38 of regulation. However,
Wofford (16-5, 7-1) made plays down the stretch to secure the win,
holding the Bucs to just three made 3-pointers on the night and outrebounding ETSU, 39-25. ... It was indeed a rough night for Rashawn
Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) and Lester Wilson (Knoxville), who combined
for just five points. Meanwhile, senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.)
scored most of his game-high 25 points during the Bucs’ rally and was
joined by only one other Buccaneer in double figures, as sophomore
forward A.J. Merriweather (Jackson) pitched in 12 points. ... While the
first 30 minutes of play did not look good for the Bucs, the final 10
minutes looked like a game between two of the contenders in the SoCon standings. The rally ultimately had everything, including a double
technical foul on Bartow and Wofford head coach Mike Young.
Will the Bucs make it a “trio” in the 1,000 point club?
Both senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) and junior forward
Lester Wilson (Knoxville) recently surpassed the 1,000-point mark for
their careers, leaving teammate Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) aiming to join
them in that elite group. ... While Rembert now stands at 1,211 for his
career and Wilson is at 1013 points in his two plus seasons, Riley currently sits at 858 points ... Riley’s current scoring average would easily
get him to over 1,000 points by the end of the season.
Riley rolling in SoCon play, one of nation’s best scorers
In 10 games against SoCon teams this season, guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) has put up impressive scoring numbers ... Riley is averaging
24.4 ppg in SoCon games, while shooting 47 percent from the field, 40
percent from 3-point range and 81 percent at line ... In those games,
he is also averaging 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals ... For the year, Riley is
first in the SoCon in scoring with 20.5 points per game, and he ranks
10th nationally as well. ... Riley has produced these numbers despite
not starting much of the season, instead coming off the bench.
Rembert making his place in ETSU hoops history
• All-Conference
selections in each
of the last 13 seasons
• Six regular season
championships
in the last 12 years
Senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) has become one of the
most feared shooters in the country over the last two years ... With his
four made 3-pointers against The Citadel (1/19), Rembert now stands
at 241 career makes from behind the arc, which puts him second on
the Bucs’ all-time list ahead of all-time great Keith “Mister” Jennings ...
Rembert will now set his sights on first place, which is held by Courtney
Pigram (Memphis), who made 276 3-pointers from 2005 to 2009 ...
Rembert also currently stands 19th on the all-time scoring list with 1,211
points ... The quality numbers don’t stop with just scoring and 3-point
shooting, as a year ago he set Top 10 single season marks for free throw
shooting percentage (.842), while also helping the Bucs finish with the
top season marks ever for free throws made (656) and attempted (877)
... Rembert was also an Ironman on the floor last year, averaging 36.1
minutes per game, the fourth highest total in program history.

Bucs rank among best in NCAA in various categories
This season, the Buccaneers are ranking among the best teams and players in
the country in various categories ... The chart to the left shows where the Bucs
rank following games on Jan. 26.
Three-dom Hall
Nineteen games into the season and it’s no secret that the Buccaneers are relying
on their 3-point shooting as a major component of the team’s offense this year ... In
nine home games so far this season, the team has combined to hit 196 3-pointers,
and has tied the school record for 3-pointers in a game (15) two times at home
-- and a total of three times all together ... Those numbers have led some people
to start calling Freedom Hall by a new moniker -- Three-dom Hall ... As a team,
the Bucs currently rank fifth nationally with 10.3 3-pointers per game, and rank
31st in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (39.0%) ... Individually, junior
forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville), along with senior guards Rashawn Rembert
(Tampa, Fla.) and Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) are ranked among the nation’s best
in threes per game ... Rembert is 4th (3.7 pg) and Riley is 39th (2.8).
Three-point streak for Bucs dates back nearly 20 years
Since Feb. 16, 1987 in a game against Davidson, the Bucs have made at least one
3-pointer in 848 consecutive games. ... ETSU was 0-for-8 in that 1987 game. ...
The Bucs currently rank as the 7th longest streak in the NCAA.
Perimeter trio accounts for signiciant offensive output
The trio of senior guards Rashawn Rembert (Tampa) and Jalen Riley (Racine,
Wis.), along with forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville), accounted for over 50 percent
of the team’s offensive production a year ago, with Rembert and Riley leading
the team with 16.8 and 13.4 points per game, respectively, while Wilson pitched
in 10.1 points per game. ... That same group has picked up where it left off a
year ago, with Riley leading the team with 20.5 ppg, Rembert second with 16.7
a contest, and Wilson netting 12.7 ppg.
McClain making place next to ETSU’s greatest PG
ETSU fans have fond memories over former point guard and All-American Keith
“Mister” Jennings, who is considered the program’s greatest player ... What many
fans may not realize is that current point guard Petey McClain (Mobile, Ala.) is
quietly making a place next to Jennings in the ETSU record books ... Currently,
McClain ranks No. 2 next to Jennings on the Bucs’ all-time assist/turnover ratio
list, making him one of the two best guards in school history for protecting the
basketball ... McClain also entered the year ranking in the Top 10 all-time for total

high with 11 assists in the loss to Tennessee (12/31). ... Currently, McClain ranks

Bartow atop list of second generation coaches
Murry Bartow’s coaching lineage is undeniable ... As the son of the late Gene
Bartow, he had the fortunate opportunity to grow up learning from one of the
most successful basketball coaches in college history ... Setting off on his own
career, Bartow has carried on the tradition. ... His 220 wins at ETSU ranks second
on the Bucs’ all-time list ... In addition, Bartow’s 323 career victories ranks No.
1 among second generation coaches ... Along with his father’s 647 career wins,
the Bartow men have combined for 970 victories, ranking fourth on the all-time
win list for Father/Son coaches.
ETSU picked to “Prestige” programs list
Since the beginning of the modern era for NCAA Division I-A basketball – marked
by the expansion of the NCAA Tournament field to 64 teams in 1984-85 – the
ETSU men’s basketball program ranks in the Top 30 percent of the 300 programs
that were eligible for the postseason at that time, this according to ESPN.com’s
“Prestige” ranking released back in 2008 ... Since that time, the Bucs have only
added to their list of prestigious honors, with back-to-back NCAA appearances in
2009 and 2010, followed by CIT appearances in 2011 and 2014 … Since the 198485 season, the Buccaneers, who have enjoyed nine NCAA Tournament trips, two
NIT berths, two CIT berths, 11 20-win seasons, and a slew of conference regular
season and tournament championships in that time, ranked tied for 82nd out of
300 teams, meaning they were in the Top 27 percent of schools making the list.
... ETSU was ranked ahead of current and former Southern Conference rivals Appalachian State, Western Carolina, Georgia Southern and UNC Greensboro. ... In
addition, the Bucs ranked ahead of SEC schools such as Tennessee, Vanderbilt,
South Carolina, Mississippi State, Georgia, Mississippi and Auburn, as well as other
major programs such as Virginia Tech, Notre Dame, DePaul, Bradley, Clemson,
California and Florida State.

SUMMARY: In a matchup of team’s that are expected to
battle for conference titles in their respective conferences, the ETSU men’s basketball team made multiple
defensive stops down the stretch and senior guard Jalen
Riley (Racine, Wis.) scored seven decisive points in the
final minute to give the Buccaneers a 69-64 road win over
Winthrop inside the Winthrop Coliseum. ... With the game
tied at 61 and just 49 seconds left, Riley connected on a
deep 3-pointer as the shot clock was expiring and later hit
four straight free throws to ice the victory. Despite shooting just 31 percent from the floor on a tough offensive
night, the Bucs out-rebounded Winthrop 43-40, turned the
ball over just 10 times and held the Eagles to 39 percent
shooting on their home floor to get the victory. ... Riley’s
heroics came after he had struggled to shoot just 1-for-8
from the field before hitting what was the decisive shot of
the game. He finished with 10 points on the night, while
junior forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville) scored a teamhigh 20 and senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa,
Fla.) netted 16.

SUMMARY: Tying a school record with 15 made 3-pointers as a team and powered by a game-high 31 points
from senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.), the
ETSU men’s basketball won an offensive showcase 98-87
over non-conference opponent UNC Asheville inside
Freedom Hall. ... With ETSU shooting 53 percent from
the field and the Bulldogs connecting on a 52 percent
clip for the night, a total of eight players scored in double
figures with four on each team. While Rembert finished
with 31, teammates such as senior guard Jalen Riley
(Racine, Wis.) netted 16, guard Devin Harris (Tampa,
Fla.) collected 12, and senior post Ron Giplaye (Lowell,
Mass.) pitched in an important 10 points. ... Giplaye also
just missed on a double-double, collecting nine rebounds
and three steals in his best performance as a Buccaneer.
Harris’ points and three made 3-pointers were also career
bests for the sophomore. ... While the offense was impressive, the defensive numbers were critical to the Bucs’
success. ETSU forced Asheville into 23 turnovers and
collected 13 steals, while the Bucs gave up the basketball
just 11 times on the night.

$WWHQGDQFH SUMMARY: The ETSU men’s basketball team posted its
best offensive first half in nearly four years, scoring 61
points on its way to a 40-point halftime advantage and
ultimately coasted to a 111-66 win over non-conference
opponent UVa.-Wise in the Buccaneers’ home opener at
Freedom Hall. ... ETSU connected on 14 3-pointers on
the night, coming up just one shy of the school record of
15, while shooting 51 percent from the floor in the first
half and hitting on 48 percent of its shots for the game.
The Bucs – who last scored 100-plus points in a 108-87
win over Tusculum back on Dec. 16, 2013 – held the
Cavaliers to just 29 percent shooting. ... Senior guard
Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) posted his second-straight
20-plus point game with a game-high 21, while four other
teammates eclipsed double figures on the night. ... In the
first half, the Bucs used an early 13-0 run to take a 13-9
advantage and build it to 26-9 with 10 minutes left before
the intermission. From there, the lead grew to 25 at 45-20
before the Bucs ended the half on a 16-1 run to make
61-21 at the break.

SUMMARY: The ETSU men’s basketball team made it interesting, but timely long-range shots by Valparaiso in the
closing minutes were the difference as the Crusaders took
a non-conference win over the Buccaneers in the regular
season opener for both schools inside the Athletics-Recreation Center. ... After cutting a 13-point Crusaders’ lead
to just two at 66-64 with 6:45 remaining in the game, the
Bucs looked on as Valpo hit a pair of long-range 3-pointers to cushion their advantage and hold on for the victory.
While ETSU played well offensively, the Bucs’ defense
allowed the Crusaders to shoot 50 percent from the floor,
56 percent from 3-point range and gave up 90 points on
the night. ... The Bucs were led by a game-high 27 points
from senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.), who was
playing in front of several friends and family that made the
trip to Valparaiso from Wisconsin. Along with Riley’s effort,
ETSU got double-figure scoring nights from sophomore
guard A.J. Merriweather (Jackson) and junior forward
Lester Wilson (Knoxville), who finished with 12 and 10
points, respectively.

SUMMARY: Despite losing its starting point guard to an
injury early in the game, having its back-up point guard
in foul trouble throughout the second half, and shooting
just 35.7 percent from the field for the game, the ETSU
men’s basketball team still found a way to drop Morehead
State 63-59 inside Johnson Arena. ... The Buccaneers
can thank junior forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville) and
senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) for overcoming all
those odds. Wilson made multiple defensive plays down
the stretch and hit three straight 3-pointers over the final
four minutes to finish with 18 points, while Riley scored a
team-high 21 despite playing much of the second half with
four fouls. ... Junior guard Petey McClain (Mobile, Ala.)
departed the game early in the first half after apparently
injuring his left ankle. But fortunately for the Bucs, it was
a struggle for both teams offensively before the break.
... ETSU did not have a made field goal until a 3-pointer
by Riley with 10:48 left before the intermission, but the
Eagles were equally ineffective and allowed the Bucs to
stay in the game.

SUMMARY: On a night when the goal was to fill Freedom
Hall, ETSU and Western Carolina filled the baskets with
a record shooting performance. ... But as he has done
on multiple occasions already this season, it was ETSU
senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) who landed the
decisive blow in the final seconds. ... With a pair of free
throws and a clutch 3-pointer that took a tie game and
gave the Buccaneers a five-point lead with 1:39 left on the
clock, Riley – who finished with a career high 31 points
– helped ETSU hold off Western Carolina 96-89 in the
Southern Conference opener for both teams Wednesday
evening in front of 4,287 fans at Freedom Hall. ... Along
with helping seal with win, Riley’s final 3-pointer of the
game also helped the Bucs match the school record for
3-pointers in a game with 15, while Western Carolina
finished with 11 long-range shots of its own on the night.
In fact, Western overcame a 16-point halftime deficit to
tie the game at 83 before ETSU used a 10-0 run to end
the Catamounts’ threat. ... Along with Riley’s 31 points,
the Bucs also got 22 points from senior guard Rashawn
Rembert (Tampa, Fla.), 17 from junior forward Lester
Wilson (Knoxville) and 16 from guard A.J. Merriweather.

SUMMARY: Leading by four points midway through the
second half, the ETSU men’s basketball team suffered
through an eight-minute scoring drought, allowing SEC
opponent Tennessee to regain the lead and escape with
a 71-61 non-conference victory over the Buccaneers
Wednesday afternoon inside Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Bucs (6-4) led 56-52 with 9:39 left, but did not hit
another field goal until 1:07 left in regulation. During that
time, Tennessee – which finished with a 38-20 rebounding
advantage for the game – used its size advantage to go
on a 19-5 run and close out the game. ETSU did hit an
impressive 13 3-pointers in the contest, but it was not
enough to upend the Volunteers, who improved to 8-4 on
the year. ... Senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa,
Fla.) had seven of the Bucs’ 13 made 3-pointers, scoring a game-high 21 points, while junior forward Lester
Wilson (Knoxville) hit four threes and finished with 16.
For Tennessee, All-SEC guard Josh Richardson had a
team-high 19 points, while post Armani Moore netted
13 and Derek Reese added 12. ... The Bucs got off to a
great start, as Rembert hit three straight 3-pointers and a
thunderous dunk by A.J. Merriweather (Jackson) helped
ETSU build an early 13-0 lead. Unfortunately, Tennessee
outscored the Bucs 71-48 the rest of the way.

SUMMARY: Senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa,
Fla.) scored a game-high 30 points and the ETSU men’s
basketball team tied the school record for 3-pointers in
a single game, but the Buccaneers still had to hold off a
frenetic rally by Eastern Kentucky to capture a hard fought
63-60 win over the Colonels in non-conference play at
McBrayer Arena. ... With Rembert hitting nine 3-pointers himself and the Buccaneers tying the school record
for threes in a game with 15, ETSU built an 18-point,
second-half lead only to see the Colonels close on a 19-3
run to make it 62-60 with a minute left. The game was
not decided until a free throw by sophomore guard Devin
Harris (Tampa, Fla.) made it a three-point game and
EKU’s Corey Walden’s last-second 3-pointer fell short. ...
While Rembert finished with 30 points and junior forward
Lester Wilson (Knoxville) added 15, sophomore Isaac
Banks (New Orleans) was certainly a bright spot. Playing
a career high 40 minutes, Banks grabbed nine rebounds,
scored six points, dished out four assists and swiped one
steal.
SUMMARY: Trailing by just six points early in the second
half, the ETSU men’s basketball team ultimately fell
victim to VCU’s heralded defensive pressure in the final
20 minutes of regulation, as the Rams raced away to an
84-60 non-conference victory inside the Siegel Center.
... After committing a manageable eight turnovers in
the first half, the Buccaneers became careless with the
basketball in the second half, committing 14 miscues
after the break and allowing the Rams to manufacture
multiple offensive runs. With the loss, ETSU drops to 6-3
on the season, while the Atlantic 10 Conference’s Rams
improve to 9-3. ... For the game, VCU forced a total of 22
turnovers, grabbed 18 steals, and dished out 23 assists.
For ETSU, got a game-high 18 points from senior guard
Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.), while junior forward Lester
Wilson (Knoxville) had 11 and senior guard Rashawn
Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) netted 10. For the game, ETSU
out-rebounded the Rams 34-30 and shot 37.5 percent
from 3-point range compared to the Rams’ 35.7 percent
clip. However, the Rams held significant advantages in
points in the paint (42-18), points off turnovers (23-12),
and bench points (35-27).

from 3-point range for the game. Guard Tevon Saddler
led the attack for the Spartans with a team-high 24 points,
as UNCG improved to 4-6 overall, 1-0 in SoCon play. ...
Meanwhile, ETSU – which dropped to 5-2 overall, 1-1

SUMMARY: In a matchup featuring the nation’s top two
teams in 3-pointers made per game, it was ultimately
transition scores, dunks and layups that made the difference for the ETSU men’s basketball team inside Freedom
Hall. ... Shooting 49 percent from the field while hitting
on just four 3-pointers for the game, the Buccaneers’ got
a career high 32 points from senior guard Jalen Riley
(Racine, Wis.) and a double-double effort of 17 points and
10 rebounds from sophomore guard A.J. Merriweather
(Jackson), as ETSU picked up a 98-88 win over Southern
Conference foe VMI. ... Along with Riley and Merriweather, fellow Bucs Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.), Lester
Wilson (Knoxville) and Desonta Bradford (Humboldt)
also reached double figures, as the Bucs improved to 7-4
overall, 2-1 in SoCon action. With the loss, VMI drops to
5-9, 1-2. In all, the Bucs would outscore VMI 48-28 in the
paint and 38-16 in fast break points as ETSU continuously attacked the basket in transition. The Bucs also
ended the game outscoring the Keydets – who normally
average 12.3 3-pointers per game – by a 50-31 clip in
bench points.

SUMMARY: In a game that saw 14 lead changes and
11 ties, the ETSU men’s basketball team made a critical
defensive stop at the buzzer and survived a road trip to
Samford with a 76-74 win over the Bulldogs in Southern
Conference play Monday evening inside the Pete Hanna
Center. ... Trailing by three at 72-69 with 2:34 left on the
clock, senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) hit
a clutch 3-pointer, blocked a shot by Samford’s Christen
Cunningham, grabbed the defensive rebound and then
found fellow senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) with
an outlet pass that led to a pair of free throws. ... At that
point the Bucs led 74-72, but then after trading foul shots,
it was the Bucs who got a final defensive stop by forcing
a miss by Cunningham as the buzzer sounded. With the
win, ETSU improves to 8-4 overall, 3-1 in SoCon play,
while Samford drops to 7-10, 0-4. ... It was a night for
offense, as the Bulldogs matched the Bucs shooting effort
by hitting on 55 percent of their shots from the field and 56
percent from 3-point range. From the foul line, the Bucs
also went 16-of-20 (80 percent), while Samford was 17-of23 (74 percent) from the charity stripe.

SUMMARY: Leading by 13 points with seven minutes left
in regulation, the ETSU men’s basketball team held on
as a frantic Mercer rally ended when a last-second shot
by the Bears’ Darious Moten missed the mark, giving the
Buccaneers a 71-70 win. ... With the victory, the Bucs
snapped a five-game losing streak to Mercer dating back
to the 2011-12 season. ... ETSU led by as many as 13 on
three different occasions in the second half, but with 3:25
left in the game a layup by Mercer’s Jordan Strawberry
made it 69-62. ... From there, the Bears continued to chip
away at the Bucs’ lead and ultimately using an 8-2 run –
capped by a dunk from Moten with 40 seconds left – to
make it 71-70. On the next possession, Riley turned the
ball over with nine seconds left, and the Bucs were left to
make a defensive stop. ... The Bears in-bounded the ball
and were unable to progress to the basket quick enough
as the Bucs implemented a full-court defense, forcing a
timeout by head coach Bob Hoffman with 2.8 seconds left
on the clock. After the timeout, the Bears did run a welldesigned play to get Moten an open look from 15 feet, but
the shot missed the mark.
SUMMARY: Chattanooga’s Casey Jones had made only
one 3-point shot in the last two seasons. Unfortunately
for the ETSU men’s basketball team, his second came
at a terrible time. ... Jones connected on an NBA-range
3-pointer with 1.7 seconds left in overtime, handing the
Mocs a 74-71 win over the Buccaneers in this longtime
Southern Conference rivalry matchup inside Freedom
Hall. ... The game lived up to the rivalry’s history, as
the Bucs had a chance to win the game at the end of
regulation, but senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.)
missed the mark on a 3-point attempt as time expired. In
the overtime period, ETSU tied the game at 71-71 with
49 seconds left following a traditional 3-point play from
sophomore guard A.J. Merriweather (Jackson). ... ETSU
then forced a miss from UTC’s Eric Robertson with 21
seconds left, but Jones made another key play by grabbing the offensive rebound. That set up his heroics following a timeout by Chattanooga head coach Will Wade.
For the Bucs – a team that entered the game second in
the league in free throw shooting percentage – a 9-of-20
effort from the foul line (45 percent) didn’t help the cause
against the Mocs.
SUMMARY: The streak is still alive for the Buccaneers.
... Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.) poured in a game-high 31
points and Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) added 21 as
the ETSU men’s basketball team defeated Western Carolina 83-76 on inside the Ramsey Center. ... The Bucs, who
led wire-to-wire, saw a 13-point lead cut to one midway
through the second half, but Riley and Rembert stepped
up as they scored 14 of ETSU’s final 15 points to secure
the victory. ... Riley shot 10-of-16 from the field to finish
one point shy of tying a career high, while Rembert was
4-of-5 from beyond the arc and 9-for-10 at the free throw
line. A.J. Merriweather (Jackson, Tenn.) also scored
in double figures as he totaled 12 points and had four
of ETSU’s season-high 14 steals, while Petey McClain
(Mobile, Ala.) dished out eight of the Bucs’ 11 assists. ...
The victory pushed ETSU’s record to 10-5, 5-2 in SoCon
play, while the Bucs also extended their win streak over
the Catamounts to 17 straight games. Western dropped to
8-10, 3-3. ... After dominating the opening 20 minutes and
leading 37-26 at the hal, ETSU was forced to withhold every run the Catamounts threw at them in the second half.

SUMMARY: LEXINGTON, Va. (Jan. 17, 2015) – A season
high 25 turnovers and poor offensive execution doomed
the ETSU men’s basketball team Saturday afternoon
inside Cameron Hall, as the Buccaneers fell to Southern
Conference foe VMI 85-79. ... Despite playing without
their leading scorer QJ Peterson – who was announced
as having left VMI for a medical furlough prior to the game
– the Bucs were unable to take advantage of the Keydets’
personnel issues. For the game, the Bucs shot just 36
percent from the floor and were out-rebounded 55-48 on
the glass. ... ETSU (10-6 overall, 5-3 SoCon) led by as
many as 14 in the second half, but watched as VMI used
a 19-3 run to take a four-point deficit at 68-64 and lead
83-71 with 55 seconds left in the game. With the win, the
Keydets (7-12, 3-5) snapped a nine-game losing streak to
ETSU, picking up their first win over the Bucs since 1999.
... From the outset the Bucs’ offensive rhythm was
disrupted by the Keydets’ swarming full-court defense.
ETSU’s guards struggled to even get the ball up the floor
and those issues resulted in 13 turnovers before half.

SUMMARY: Senior guard Rashawn Rembert (Tampa,
Fla.) scored a game-high 22 points and two other ETSU
players posted double-double efforts, as the Buccaneers
dropped non-conference opponent Tusculum College ...
The Buccaneers, who improved to 11-6 on the year, enjoyed a 17-point effort from senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine, Wis.), while junior forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville)
finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while sophomore
guard Devin Harris (Tampa, Fla.) finished with 11 points
and 11 rebounds on the night. ... The Bucs sprinted out of
the gates, building a lead of 20 points at 34-14 with seven
minutes left before the intermission. At that point, ETSU
emptied its bench and started using its entire roster the
rest of the half. ... Tusculum took advantage of the Bucs’
approach to pull to within 13 at 42-29 by the intermission.
Before the break, ETSU shot 50 percent from the floor
and out-rebounded the Pioneers 22-19, holding Tusculum
to a 31 percent shooting percentage. ... After the break,
Tusculum managed to keep the game within 14 points for
the first four minutes of play, but a 15-3 spurt by the Bucs
finally increased the cushion to 25 points at 65-40 and
ETSU never looked back.

SUMMARY: Junior forward Lester Wilson (Knoxville)
eclipsed 1,000 points for his career and senior teammates Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) and Jalen Riley
(Racine, Wis.) each scored a team-high 18 points, as the
ETSU men’s basketball team dropped The Citadel 70-59
in SoCon action at Freedom Hall. ... Wilson – who entered the game just one point shy of 1,000 for his career
– wasted little time reaching that special milestone, hitting
the first shot of the game with a 3-pointer at the 19:13
mark. ... That basket was the first of many for the Bucs
over the first 12 minutes of game action, as ETSU shot
extremely well from the field and sprinted out to a 32-9
with 7:43 left before the intermission. Unfortunately for
ETSU, the Bulldogs did not simply go away, responding
with a 15-0 run of their own to finish the first half down
just 39-30. ... After the break, both teams exchanged
offensive punches, with the Bulldogs getting to within four
early in the second half and later getting to within five on
multiple occasions. The last surge by The Citadel came
with six minutes left in the game, when a 3-pointer by
Bulldogs’ sharpshooter Ashton Moore made it 60-55. ...
However, at that point the Bucs scored six in a row, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Rembert that made it 66-56.

SUMMARY: The ETSU men’s basketball team overcame
a large second half deficit, but the rally fell short as
Wofford held off the Buccaneers 72-64 in Southern
Conference play inside Benjamin Johnson Arena. ...
Trailing by as many as 21 midway through the second
half, the Bucs (12-7, 6-4 SoCon) cut the Terriers’ lead to
four twice in the final 1:38 of regulation. However, Wofford
(16-5, 7-1) made plays down the stretch to secure the
win, holding the Bucs to just three made 3-pointers on the
night and out-rebounding ETSU, 39-25. ... It was indeed
a rough night for Rashawn Rembert (Tampa, Fla.) and
Lester Wilson (Knoxville), who combined for just five
points. Meanwhile, senior guard Jalen Riley (Racine,
Wis.) scored most of his game-high 25 points during the
Bucs’ rally and was joined by only one other Buccaneer in
double figures, as sophomore forward A.J. Merriweather
(Jackson) pitched in 12 points. ... While the first 30
minutes of play did not look good for the Bucs, the final
10 minutes looked like a game between two of the contenders in the SoCon standings. The rally ultimately had
everything, including a double technical foul on Bartow
and Wofford head coach Mike Young.
