..
As we continue discussion, we find that liturgy
was used by early Christians to describe for Greekspeaking individuals Jesus’ work in giving salvation
to all. For Greeks of that time, liturgy “described an
action done by an individual to benefit the larger community.” How well does this help us know what Jesus
does by his Passion –Death-Resurrection!
The liturgy of Jesus is renewed in our time
with each celebration of Holy Mass. This renewal of
the Sacrifice of Calvary brings the redemptive action
of Jesus, done once for all, to us as we join to pray.
This liturgy of Jesus becomes our liturgy when
we give ourselves in prayer and union guided by the
grace of the Holy Spirit. We join our prayer to that of
Jesus as we pray “through him, with him, and in him in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, all power and glory is
yours, Almighty Father forever and ever. AMEN!”
It has been said, “the purpose of the liturgy of
Holy Eucharist is to create a community of people
who live the paschal mystery. They strive to imitate
Jesus’ self-giving by loving God above all and loving
others as Jesus loves them.
`
“The power of the liturgy is that its symbols
and rituals communicate deeper significance over
time. Sunday Mass is a continuous teachable moment,
an ongoing visual catechesis that engages young and
old. Why are there so many liturgical ministers? Because the whole community shares this one prayer.
Why is the Lectionary so honored? Because Jesus is
really present when the lectors proclaim the Word,
the cantor leads the assembly in response and the
preacher applies the Word to the here-and-now needs
of this community. The liturgy imprints a pattern on
the community, week after week, season by season.
“To say this is to risk the obvious. The way we
worship will determine the kind of community we become. The parish that lets its liturgical life inspire its
day to day operations is on the right track and in
touch with the deep mystery that together we have
been called to be formed in Christ, to become with
him ‘a living sacrifice of praise.’ Everything else flows
from that.”
What each of us does as we come to Mass is
extraordinarily important. We do not just “go to Mass”
when we understand that our action in word and song
and movement witness our involvement in the action
of Jesus and his self-gift to the Father. We become
less casual about our together-prayer when we understand that it is not my individual prayer but rather
prayer with and through the community action: Jesus
in our midst leads us to the Father. We become more
attentive to listen to the Word, to remember God’s
message, to celebrate God’s blessings for each and
all. We become more open to our responsibility to carry forth as disciples what God entrusts to us so we
can lead others to discipleship of faith and service.
This singular gift makes us truly “Church” because
the mystery of the Body of Christ is demonstrated and
realized by our efforts for and with each other in prayer. (Continued)

FAITH FORMATION
Thomas Smith, a
former
Protestant
minister who was received into the Catholic Church in 1996.
Thomas is a repeat
guest on EWTN and
Catholic radio. He is
co-author of “The
Prophets: Messengers of God’s Mercy” Bible
Timeline Study. Visit www.gen215.org for more
information.
This Mission will be a wonderful time of
education, inspiration and Motivation for Catholics to recover and rediscover our faith. The
Mission will focus on the three pillars of the
Spiritual Life: Word, Worship and Works of
Mercy.
Theses three pillars of the Spiritual Life
that shape the Sermon on the Mount and frame
Jesus’ final discourse before going to his Passion (effectively bookending his public teaching). They are fundamental to what it means to
be a disciple of Jesus, and have been emphasized by Pope Francis.
Saint Agatha:
Agatha is another of the early saints about whom most
our knowledge is based on legend. She was born in
Sicily, either Catania or Palermo, both of which claim
her as a patron, and was martyred in Catania,.
Hey Kids!
Be sure to pick up your
own copy of MagnifiKid!
Don’t by shy— Come forward to hear the Word of
God during Children’s
Liturgy!
..
Agatha dedicated herself to God and a life of chastity.
When she refused the advances of a Roman consul, he
denounced her as a Christian and subjected her to torture and indignities
to change her mind. But Agatha’s continued dedication to God and her
calm acceptance of torture only infuriated her captors and they had her
tortured and killed.

February 1, 2015 – Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dt 18: 15-20; Ps 95: 1-2, 6-9; 1 Cor 7: 32-35; Mk 1: 21-28!
In the midst of miracles and cures and deep understanding of people, Jesus may sometimes seem
distant from us. The readings on this Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time, however, emphasize His humanity; He was one of the people, someone who
each of us could relate to not as a God, but a man.
However, it can be a bit overwhelming for us to accept Jesus in the way He wants us to.
That does not mean we do not acknowledge His
divinity, but we also must view Him as a companion
on our own life’s journey. In a sense, this is what
stewardship calls us to — walking with the Lord
and leaning on Him when we must, and certainly
finding strength in His presence. But to have Him
present in our lives requires us to make an effort to
make that happen.
In the first reading from Deuteronomy, Moses declares, “A prophet like me will the Lord, your God,
raise up for you from among your own kin; to him
you shall listen.” Throughout Advent and the Christmas season we prepared for the arrival of Jesus.
Now as we approach Lent and Easter it is time for
us to listen to Him. The late Archbishop Fulton
Sheen said, “One of the best ways to get happiness
and pleasure out of life is to ask ourselves, ‘How
can I please God’?”
Would you like to help at the
Front Desk in the Parish Office?
We are in need of 2-4 volunteers
to help at the Front Desk on the 4th
and 5th Sundays of the month.
The hours are 8:30 am to 12:30 pm. Please contact
Frances at 480-488-2229 if your are interested.
Thank you.

Parish Advent Shoebox Project Thank You !
Thank you to all of our parishioners, Preschool families and Religious Education
families for contributing to the St Nicholas Shoe Box project as part of our church’s
Advent Ministry. We were able to provide over 240 overfilled, wrapped presents to
St. Agnes Parish School. St Agnes is located in central Phoenix. The student population
has a majority of Latino Americans. Over 75% of the students receive a free or reduced
lunch while over 90% of the students receive some type of financial
assistance to attend the school.
Per the principal, our parish project is the only one that benefits the school.
For many of these students, our wrapped boxes are the only gift they receive for Christmas. The thank you notes are truly heart warming and overwhelming! Please take a few
moments and read the thank you notes sent from the students at St Agnes Parish. They
will be placed at the back of the church. A special thank you to the Madura Family for
taking on this very special project.
