Issue 84 - February 2015
Hi and welcome to the 84th issue of the Pauanui Post. What a busy month it’s been! It was great to see the town fill up wit h holiday
makers and to see them out participating in all that was on offer. I hope that you have all created some wonderful memories over the
holiday period (like the 40 year old that jumped off the wharf with her 63 year old Mother! - these were first time jumpers, good effort!!).
I would like to extend a big thanks to the Pauanui Sports and Recreation Club, Tim, Amber, ’Photographer Pat’, and all the volunteers
that work so hard to put the Summer Series on each year. The events are fantastic and the growing numbers attending each yea r are a
testament to the quality of the series. The amount of work you do while everyone else is ‘on holiday’ is much appreciated.
Not much room for me this month so I’ll sign off by wishing the youngest members of our community a happy start to school and
pre-school next week. I’m sure you all have lots of great holiday stories to share! Until next month, Jodie
Average annual rates increase of only 1.9% over next ten years
We're looking at a projected 1.9% increase annually over the next decade and our external debt reducing to a
level of only $4M or less. This news was delivered to Council as it endorsed its Draft Long Term Plan (LTP)
consultation document, which will go out for public consultation in March. This coming year the average rates
will increase by 3.6% - but it still won't be what ratepayers in a lot of areas were paying back in 2010 - and will
average over the next 10 years to an annual 1.9% increase. The rates increase for this coming financial year
comes after a well-signalled move that $46.6M of unpaid debt, relating to our three eastern seaboard wastewater plants, is moved from
potential future development to existing ratepayers.
"We had no choice but transfer this debt to the current ratepayer as we do not envisage the numbers of new ratepayers arriving to pay it
off," says David Hammond, Thames-Coromandel District Council Chief Executive. "A lot of this can be attributed to recession which hit
the Coromandel in 2009 and if this situation changes in the future we will most certainly revisit it. But in the meantime it is the prudent
thing to do," he says. "Meanwhile the reduction of our external debt over the next decade to a level of only $4M or less, an d the steady
building of infrastructure reserves, puts us in a sound fiscal position so that if there are any exceptional risks or surprises, we can deal
with it," says Mayor Glenn Leach." That's just good common sense."
Councillors were informed that average property rates still remain well under 2010 rate levels in many areas of the District. Residential
properties in most parts of Coromandel will enjoy rate levels lower than 2010 for five to seven years. The picture is even better for
commercial properties whose average rates will remain under 2010 rate levels for more than fifteen years. Here's a few examples:
 Back in 2010 if you had a residential property in Thames with a land value (LV) of $140k your average rates were $2,243. In our draft
LTP you won't be paying more than that until 2017/2018 (eight years) when the average rate is $2,297.
 Back in 2010 if you had a rural property in Thames with a LV of $4.2m you paid an average $12,863 in rates. Under our draft LTP your
average rates are still less than that after 15 years (2024/2025) when it hits an average of $9,332.
 In Coromandel a residential property with a LV of $225k was paying an average rate of $2,528 back in 2010. It will only be eight years
later that it returns to a similar rate of $2,560 in 2017/2018.
 In Tairua-Pauanui in 2010 a residential property with a LV of $400k was paying an average rate of $2,730. It returns to an average rate
of $2,788 by 2017/18 (eight years).
"Our rates and debt position is really good news as it tells us the story of where we've come from," says Mayor Glenn Leach. "To only
now get back to the rate you were paying seven years ago - at the earliest - is extraordinary in local government terms. This data proves
that what this Council has implemented is really working."

What’s happened ...
Inaugural Great Outdoors Expo a resounding success
Fantastic weather greeted visitors for the inaugural Great Outdoors Expo at
Kennedy Park last month. A crowd of just over 5,000 enjoyed browsing
amongst 80 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations in ‘all things
outdoors’. High profile companies such as Danske Mobler, Hunting & Fishing,
Family Boats and Duncan & Ebbett were there, along with many other
stallholders promoting and selling products and services in the marine, sports,
leisure and outdoor space areas. A range of delicious food and amusement
rides were also on offer, to keep the whole family entertained.
In creating the Expo concept, organizers were keen to deliver an event that
maximised visitor numbers from within Pauanui and further afield. To support
this aim, entry to the Expo was free. Further, the Expo was advertised widely
on the peninsula via summer visitor guides, newspapers and radio to encourage
holidaymakers from outside Pauanui to visit for the day. A number of local
exhibitors promoted Pauanui as a destination for future holidays, leisure
activities, conferences, weddings and the like. Feedback from exhibitors
confirmed that many visitors had travelled to Pauanui just for the day and the
ferry from Tairua was also packed for much of the day.
Exhibitor feedback has been extremely positive with many already indicating a
desire to be part of next year’s Expo.
The Expo raised over $20,000 for Hikuai School which serves Pauanui and the
surrounding area. The proceeds are earmarked to support eLearning at the
three-class school.
In making the event such a success, the Expo team want to thank the many
local businesses and individuals that supported the event.
In addition, the team would like to publically acknowledge the following for
their generous support and assistance: Neil & Heather at Richardsons Real
Estate; John and Treive at The Glade; Gary & Treena at the Chocolate Pretzel;
and Sonya and the team at Pauanui Supervalue.
Top Right: Kelly, Rory, Emma & Heather with the Weber BBQ which was kindly donated
by Richardsons Real Estate.
Middle Right: Over 5,000 visitors soaked up the sun at the Great Outdoors Expo.
Bottom Right: Hikuai School Principal Jared Stein flipped gourmet burgers for
the hungry crowd.
Water figures show a busier Coromandel summer
Water consumption on the east coast of the Coromandel over the Christmas-New
Year period confirmed more activity than last year in some of our favourite holiday
spots.
While those in Whangamata consumed about 77-and-a-half million litres of
water over two weeks, Onemana was the outstanding increase, followed by
Hahei, Pauanui, Whangamata and Tairua.
"We want to thank those who conserved water over summer by not leaving their
hoses running and doing even little things like waiting until they had a full load
before washing clothes or dishes," says Thames-Coromandel District Council
Water Services Engineer Rodney Clark.
Water consumption from 23 December 2014 to 6 January 2015
 Whangamata 77,493,100 litres (up 12% on last summer)
 Whitianga 60,339,000 litres (down 7% on last summer)
 Pauanui 29,091,000 litres (up 13% on last summer)
 Matarangi 23,424,000 litres (down 2% on last summer)
 Tairua 22,268,000 litres (up 5% on last summer)
 Onemana 5,370,000 litres (up 25% on last summer)
 Hahei (TCDC Supply) 2,098,604 litres (up 18% on last summer)

Pauanui Bowling Club Half year report
Pauanui Bridge Club
to 31 December 2014.
At the Prizegiving for the Bridge Club for 2014 Marion Palmer
won the Henderson Trophy which is for the trophy for the
Overall points throughout the year and Cushla Peers won the
New Player Award.
The most significant performance for this period and indeed in the
entire history of our Bowls Club was John McConnell, Grant Moran
and Graham Bowers making the Final of Trusts NZ Bowls Open
Triples. Unfortunately they missed winning by the narrowest possible
margin when the opposing skip knocked their shot bowl out with his
last bowl of the match. However Runner up in a NZ Title match with a
large field of top bowlers from throughout the country, although
disappointing, is an excellent achievement.
In the singles championship at this tournament Grant Moran reached
the last 16 out of over 200 entrants, also a great performance.

Judy Hill was Runner up in the Womens 1 to 8 years Singles.

Club Tournaments.
Our Monthly Tournaments have all been fully booked with a good
number of visiting teams. Unfortunately our December hams fixture
had to be cancelled due to rain and stormy conditions. Our Annual 2
Day Classic, the major event each year, was again a most successful
tournament with several entrants from outside the Thames Valley
area. John McConnell, Grant Moran, Graham Bowers & Gerry Wright
were the best performing Pauanui team, qualifying for the top 6
group and taking 3rd place overall.
Several club teams have visited neighbouring clubs with good results.
Des Paton, Derek Davis, Anne & Ron Jeffries made the top 6 group in
the Whangamata Bowling Club Annual 3 day tournament which
attracted 26 teams from several clubs througout central North Island
Bowls Centres.
The second half of the season is now underway and anyone
interested would be most welcome to attend our Monday 1.00pm
Club Days.

Full circle at Hikuai School
When Joseph Stodart started at Hikuai School as a five year old,
little did he know he’d end up back there as a teacher one day.
Joe is the newest addition to the valued teaching team at Hikuai
School and will be leading the children in Room 4 (years 4-6). Joe,
who grew up on the Coromandel, has fond memories of his school
days, including time at Whenuakite and a rural school in
Northland. “I like the family atmosphere of a small school and
the way the community gets involved, which is why Hikuai School
appealed to me”, he said.
After leaving school Joe spent a few years working as a builder,
travelling around NZ. But the lure of offshore adventures was too
great and he followed his passion for diving, moving to Australia
and working as a Dive Instructor on the Great Barrier Reef. Joe
describes this as a defining point in his life, as his job carried a lot
of responsibility. It also gave him the opportunity to travel
further, exploring PNG and Canada.
Returning to NZ Joe worked as a volunteer in Outdoor Adventure
Camps for children. It was here that he realized he could make a
difference in children’s lives by giving them the confidence to try
new things and challenge themselves. “I really wanted to be a
positive influence in their lives”, he said “which is why I decided to
study to become a teacher”.

Joe qualified last year and is very much looking forward to sharing
his knowledge and skills with the children in Room 4. “I’m excited
about getting back in the classroom” he said. A talented guitar
player, Joe hopes to share his love of music with the children.
He’s also keen to introduce the students to his new pet rabbit
Gwendolyn, and three new hens.
In his spare time Joe can be found pursuing his other passion of
surfing and has been enjoying the waves at both Tairua and
Pauanui Beach with his Canadian partner Angela.

The hard work has certainly paid off with the refurbishment of the club. Just
what the doctor ordered. The alfresco area and cafe a no better place to wine
and dine. I have not heard one negative comment. This is pleasing as a lot of
locals did one heck of a great job. Due to a great atmosphere our membership is
growing fast. Our caterers have gone in boots and all. No one could of believed
how many meals they have served. I take my hat off to them. Yes you may of
waited for the odd meal, but there may of been orders before you. Just enjoy
the surroundings.
All the sub clubs will be starting soon so once again the club is used everyday by
somebody. Go on the clubs web site to see what sub clubs are available. New
members are always welcome. www.pauanuiclub.co.nz.

Constable Paul Johnston has expressed a general frustration among officers at
the lack of helmets being worn while riding scooters and bikes. Please be
reminded, once again, that the wearing of helmets is a safety issue and is also
the law on cycles. Fines have been, and will continue to be, issued.
There were a few drivers pulled over during January who were found to be over
the legal driving limit. Remember that from 1 December 2014 the alcohol limit
for drivers aged 20 years and over lowered from 400mcg of alcohol per litre of
breath to 250mcg. The blood alcohol limit lowered from 80mg of alcohol per
100ml of blood to 50mg. For drivers under 20, the limit stays at zero.
Aside from this, there were some minor reports of property going missing but
overall Constable Johnston is happy with the way the holiday period went and
the behaviour of those that were in Pauanui over this time.
Please also be reminded to lock up your valuables and/or remove them from
sight when vacating your property.

Cyclists Tackle New Trail Section
MCNABB
Members of the Pauanui Cycle Group have ridden the new section
of the Pauanui to Tairua Trail.
Kitchens, Cabinets & Furniture
The section they tackled runs from Tangitarori Lane to the new
bridge over the Tangitarori Canal.
A local business enjoying an excellent
reputation for fine craftsmanship.
Reaction from the cyclists is that the new section of trail is
“great”.
Some group members have tried the completed Duck Creek
section and enjoyed the ride.
While the track is not officially open, Trail Chairman Gary Fowler
says the finished sections can be used with care.
“Please observe the signs and keep away if workers are on the
track,” he said.
Mr. Fowler said the Trail has moved over the Tangitarori Canal
and is heading for Pa Point.

“The bridge over the canal is almost complete and the trail is
moving through the next 600 metres to the Point.
“We need to finish the handrails on the approaches to the bridge
but the trail itself from the Tangitarori Lane approach is finished,”
he said. “This is a major section of the initial project complete.”
Mr. Fowler praised the volunteers who have worked “tirelessly”
on the project.
“Without these people we would not be in our current
satisfactory position.”
The next major section of the trail will be a specially constructed
boardwalk around Pa Point.
“This is a tricky area and we are awaiting expert advice on how to
tackle this section,” Mr. Fowler said.
“We are looking at a boardwalk that is raised above the rocks and
bolted to the cliff face.
“Money will be a major concern for this section of the trail as the
raised boardwalk will be expensive.”
Mr. Fowler said the reason for going around Pa Point is that an
area at the top of the cliff is a Maori pa site land that is thought to
contain a burial ground.

Oyster Catchers
Visitors to Royal Billy Point recently may have noticed the pair of
nesting Oyster Catchers. ’Mum’ was proudly sitting on two eggs
down by the boat ramp, right beside the bike stand.
The proud ‘parents to be’ were not a bit shy of the many swimmers
and boaties who passed close by their nest, which was roped off and
regularly checked by a local bird protector.
These two have since moved on but there are many other Oyster
Catchers in the area. If you do notice any nesting please be mindful
that this is also their environment and take care not to disturb them!
The hard hitting questions for Hikuai School’s newly appointed Principal
As mentioned in last months Post, prior to the end of the 2014 school year the newly appointed
Principal of Hikuai School (acting Principal at that point), Mr Jared Stein, was asked the hard hitting
questions from some of the Hikuai School Year 1 and 2 students (aged 5 & 6).
Josie- How do you feel about being the principal of Hikuai School?
Hi Josie. I am absolutely rapt. Next year will be my fourth year at Hikuai School and I am very
proud that the community decided to have me as their school principal. But just like Mrs Hunter has
expectations of you, I know that our school community have expectations of me so I need to make
sure I work very hard just like each student at Hikuai School does so that I can reach my pinnacle as
the principal.
Do you know how to run Hikuai School?
I have been on a special course this year which teaches you how to be a principal and how to run a school. I really enjoyed it and we had
good teachers helping us too so I’m really well prepared. The good thing is Josie, I have awesome teachers to help me here at Hikuai and
good students who are respectful, so it makes my job just so much easier.
What will you change?
Well as you know I’ve changed the way we eat together because I think it is really important we talk to one another - after all we are part
of the Hikuai School family. Next year we will be doing fitness together as a school in the mornings so we are wide awake and ready to
start our learning with fresh air in our lungs and the blood pumping into our brains. That’s just 2 small changes but I have some others
that I just want to keep secret at the moment so I can surprise you next year!
Brayden – What would you do if you were Principal right now?
Hi Brayden. Well right now Brayden you can probably see that I am really trying to get to know all our children a little bit better. I meet
the bus each morning and talk to each person as they get off the bus. I also make sure I come down and talk to you all when you are
eating. I get out and play some games too. I’ve been playing basketball with Noah from room 3 over the last couple of weeks which has
been great fun. I really want to lead by example Brayden and show everyone how important it is that we respect, trust and look after one
another and the things we own.
Riley – What will you do if someone comes to you and says someone is being naughty?
Good question Riley. Well it’s really important to find out exactly what happened. Sometimes people can misunderstand someone else
and think they are being naughty when actually they aren’t so that’s why I try and find out exactly what is going on. But if someone was
making some poor decisions and it was affecting other people, our school property or the school’s reputation, they would have to come
and see me and we would have to find out the cause of their actions and how they were going to fix the situation.
Do you laugh when someone tells you a funny joke?
Most definitely! I love funny jokes! If you know one you’ll have to tell me okay. Sometimes having a laugh or laughing at a good joke can
turn an ordinary day into a very happy day.
Jay – What would you buy for Hikuai School?
Hi Jay. If I had all the money I wanted I would buy a new trampoline, I would put in a BMX track down the back of school field, I would put
a big covered sandpit in by room 3, I would get every student a new laptop so each student had one, I would make the pool deeper, I
would put in a confidence course down the side of the field…so many things I could wish for Jay and that’s just the start!
Noah – Do you know any funny jokes?
Hi Noah. Well I like dinosaurs and so does Ethan and he told me this joke earlier in the year and I absolutely loved it. What do you call a
dinosaur with no eyes? A Doyouthinkysaurus!
Chloe - Is it hard being the new Principal of Hikuai School?
Hi Chloe. Another good question. Well Chloe, it’s not hard but it is challenging. I like to use our learning journey picture to help me
because being new to anything can be challenging. When I started being principal I set myself goals (which are the stepping stones in
the picture). It’s just like when say you were first learning your doubles in maths, you might not have found it easy for a start but you
definitely knew that you could do it. Being principal is a bit like that, I’m learning new things but I know the more I do th ose things the
better at them I will get until I reach my pinnacle.

We would love to have some newcomers:
1. Keen artists

another go
3. People who have never held a brush or pencil before – lots
of us started like this – there is plenty of help and advice
available within our friendly group.

Pauanui Community Library
Do you want to be wanted?
Do you love books and have a couple of hours a week to spare?
The Library committee would like to hear from you. We have
several committee members taking overseas breaks during the
year and need to have coverage for their time away, and on a
permanent basis.
It’s an exciting time to get involved with the imminent move into
the new building which is finally taking shape.
Summer was busy in the Library, but our student Tyla coped well
for the second year running. The Book Sales, under the command
of Lesley Whitmore, raised an amazing amount of money, $3 and
$4 at a time, which will help towards, not only new books, but
several little ‘extras’ the committee have on their ‘wish list’ for
the new building.
So – if you are interested - no library experience necessary only
enthusiasm and computer capability – contact Marian Gunson
(chair) 8647711 or Joan Parker (Past Chair) 8648103.

Imagine a home that heats itself, provides its own water, grows its
own food, needs no expensive technology, recycles its own waste,
and has its own power source. And now imagine that it can be
built anywhere, by anyone, out of the things society throws away!
It’s known as an Earthship and one is currently under
development by Gus Anning and Sarah Rowe in the Puketui
Valley, Hikuai.
Earthship Te Timatanga launched its project with an official
welcome in Hikuai early in January, ahead of the build.
Earthship owners and builders Gus and Sarah welcomed local
volunteers, overseas workers and Tairua-Pauanui Community
Board Chair Bob Renton, who made a presentation on behalf of
Thames-Coromandel District Council.
Gus and Sarah live in Tairua where Gus is a skipper for Whitianga
Water Transport and the earthship project is featured in the ‘Our
Coromandel’ Summer Magazine's 2015 issue.
An earthship is a passive solar house buried into the ground that
incorporates the use of natural and recycled materials. Te
Timatanga construction materials include rammed-earth car tyres,
bottles and locally sourced mussel shells.
"We will be recycling approximately 2,000, which equates to 500
cars," Gus says, speaking about the tyres. "We have sourced these
from Kiwi Tyre Recycling in Thames. Smart Environmental is also a
big contributor to our project."
Gus speaks highly of the members of Council's building team who
have encouraged the project. "They've had nothing but a
commonsense approach to all our alternative solutions."

New Zealand WW1 Memorial Forests
Project launched
A World War 1 Memorial Forest will be created on the
Coromandel to commemorate all New Zealand soldiers who
died in the Great War.
The project, which will commence on ANZAC Day 2015, will
see a total of 18,166 trees planted at a series of different
sites around the Coromandel. The trees are designed to
become memorial forests which will enhance environmental
values, and also act as a place for people to walk and remember New Zealand history.
Each forest will commemorate a different battle or campaign during the war, and it is proposed that initially five forests wi ll be planted one in each community board area. As more sites become available, additional forests will be added to reach the 18,166 number of trees.
Mayor Glenn Leach says that he is excited about the project, which will provide a living, growing memorial for the sacrifice of the fallen
soldiers in World War 1.
"We believe this is a special project which will create a series of memorial forests of national significance that is relevant to all
New Zealanders, not just locals," he says. "We are looking to commemorate the major battles such as Gallipoli, the Somme and
Passchendaele, as well as smaller conflicts like Le Quesnoy or the Palestine campaign as we build towards the 18,000 tree total over the
next three years.
"Our intention is to commence the planting project on 25th April 2015, and then to involve the community groups and schools i n the
planting and care for the forests. One of the goals of planting these sites is to provide a series of forests which provide environmental
education for schoolchildren, a focal point for community involvement, and places of environmental sustainability for future generations.
"In addition to planting and tending the trees, I would like to see schoolchildren involved in things like graphic design for the WW1
interpretative history signboards, or linking to the curriculum studies that teach about each of the battles. We need the nex t generation
to understand the past, so that we learn about our heritage."
Working Party Established
At a recent meeting of community groups, the Waikato Regional Council, the Department of Conservation, Forest and Bird and school
representatives, the proposal for the forests was enthusiastically supported. A working party comprising representatives from each of
the five community board areas has been set up to help progress the project.
To date, the Thames War Memorial, "The Paddock" above Cathedral Cove, and the new Whitianga cemetery have been identified as ideal
sites for battles such as Messines, Gallipoli and Passchendaele. Other smaller battles such as Le Quesnoy and the Palestine camp aign are
likely to be commemorated at the Durrants Drive Reserve in Whangamata, and the Tangitarori Walkway in Pauanui. A site in Coro mandel
township has yet to be identified.
"We're looking for an initial planting of two signature trees at each site on Anzac Day, and then holding an initial planting day about a
month later for the schoolchildren and community groups for the first 100 trees," Mayor Leach says.
"The objective will be to finish all the plantings - and complete the Memorial Forest at a ceremony on November 11 2018 - the 100th
anniversary of the end of WW1."
Mayor Leach says there will also be an opportunity for people throughout New Zealand to participate in the Memorial Forest to
acknowledge their families who took part in the war.
"We are proposing to GPS the trees, and there will be an opportunity for people to purchase a tree in the name of their famil y member,"
he says.
New Zealand WW1 Memorial Forest working party members are:
Thames - Mark Binning (RSA), Craig Cassidy (Community Board)
Whitianga - Tony Fox (Councillor), Paul Kelly (Community Board chair), and John Wright (Mercury Bay Area School).
Coromandel - Keith Stephenson (Community Board), Alison Henry (Kauri 2000), Asha Peppiatt (Coromandel Area School)
Tairua-Pauanui - Gary Fowler (Hikuai District Trust), Kim Coppersmith (Community Board), Bob Renton (Community Board chair)
Whangamata: Jack Wells (Councillor), School representative, and community representatives (Lions and RSA) - TBC
Where are the sites?
Final decisions on the site of each battle are yet to be made, but at this stage it is proposed that Gallipoli (2779 trees) will be honoured on
Department of Conservation land above Cathedral Cove, that the Battle of Passchendaele will be remembered at the new Whitianga
Cemetery, with the Thames War Memorial honouring the Battle of Messines Ridge (1300 trees), as well as a separate site on the entrance
to Thames to specifically remember the war dead from the town. Other sites will be the Tangitarori Lane walkway from Pauanui -Hikuai
which will honour the Palestine campaign, and the Battle of Le Quesnoy at Whangamata. Other sites are still under investigati on for the
remaining battles to be commemorated.
How to purchase trees
Each tree will be numbered and plotted on GPS and members of the public will be able to purchase a tree to honour a fallen soldier for
$100. If you are interested in purchasing a tree from Anzac day 2015 onwards, then you can register your name and email address at
www.tcdc.govt.nz/purchaseatree.
