Tranquil retreat
Sunshine Coast, Qld Australia
Nestled into a secluded ridge and looking north over the
glassy waters of Baroon Pocket Reservoir in North Maleny,
Queensland, is a home that enjoys privacy, tranquility and
extraordinary scenery.
Architect Tim Cronin and builder Jaicon Construction have
created a design that emphasises the interplay of interior and
exterior, with robust matrials inspired by the site, and design
solutions that respond to the sub-tropical environment.
Clever features encourage passive cooling throughout.
A panel window acts like a set of bellows to funnel a mountain
breeze above the double timber and stainless main doors.
A 2-metre deep saltwater pool at the centre of the home
provides visual delight and cooling breezes to most rooms.
Banks of louvres in split-level ceilings moderate both light
and airflow.

RECIPROCAL CLUB
THE ARMY & NAVY CLUB, UNITED KINGDOM
Founded in August 1837, the year Queen Victoria
acceded to the Throne, the Army & Navy Club was
formed to meet the needs of the many army officers
wanting to join a Service Club, most of which were
already full. The great Duke of Wellington said he
would become neither a patron nor a Member unless
membership was also offered to officers of the Royal
Navy and Royal Marines. Hence, the “Army Club”
became the Army and Navy Club.
Situated in the heart of West End London, close to
Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, and Trafalgar
Square, the club offers its members a superb home
in the heart of St James’s. Combining tradition with
modern, comfortable amenities, it offers the chance
to meet fellow members and friends, organise
professional meetings in a secure environment at a
prestigious address, or simply drop in for a relaxed
evening. To arrange for a letter of introduction when
visiting the club, please contact the Membership

YEARS OF TR
TION
THE FIRST PRESIDENT
OF THE TANGLIN CLUB
THOMAS DUNMAN
The founding president of The Tanglin Club was none
other than Singapore’s first Commissioner of Police,
Thomas Dunman. Born in the United Kingdom in 1815,
Dunman came to Singapore in 1840 and started his
career as an assistant in Dyce & Company, a merchant
firm. In 1843, he joined the police force, climbing the
career ladder to become superintendent of police in
1851, and finally to commissioner of police in 1856.
POLICE CAREER
Dunman was respected by the community during his
service as commissioner; he was known for being on
good terms with people from various backgrounds
and ethnic communities, and as a result had a good
intelligence network for information, which was
useful in quelling unrest and keeping the peace. He
implemented plans to improve the efficiency and
training of the police force, which included pay raises
and better working hours for servicemen and setting
up specialised training programmes and night classes.
He was also credited for creating a pension scheme
for retired officers. His strategy culminated in the
improved morale within the police force, and the crime
rate reduced significantly under his supervision. The
then-police superintendent was instrumental in the
quelling of the Hokkien-Teochew Riots (also known as
the Great Riots of 1854, or the Five Catties of Rice Riots), which occurred on 5 May 1854. The riots were the result
of escalating conflicts between the Hokkien and Teochew communities, and the suspected involvement of secret
societies. The riots went on for ten days, and led to the deaths of hundreds of people and the mass destruction of
property. Considered to be one of the most severe riots in Singapore’s history, the intense ten-day period tested the
commissioner and his police force to the limit.
Dunman’s initial action was to call for military reinforcements to back up his police force, but the request was denied
by then-Governor William Butterworth. Eventually, help was provided, in the form of British marines stationed at
Singapore’s harbour, volunteers from the European community, and Malay soldiers summoned by the Temenggong

WHISKY TRAINING
In early December, a whisky training workshop by
wine and whisky importer Le Vigne was held at the
Fireplace to educate staff on the history and detail
that goes in to making good Scotch whisky, and how
to identify and serve it. The workshop began with a
short history lesson on the origins and development

The

proved to be quite entertaining and educational, and
the staff, especially the serving staff, came away
with a greater awareness and better understanding

the

additions of mace and cayenne. It includes
bread crumbs (or rusk) and an egg, which
help bind the sausage and improve the
texture. The sausage meat is kneaded
before stuffing into the casings, which also
improves the texture. Bread, or rusk, is
not a space filler as in war time England,
but as Heston Blumenthal confirms in his
book In Search of Total Perfection the
bread or rusk is essential to retain the fat
and moisture.

CHOIR SECTION
Looking back at 2014, it was an eventful year for the
Choir, as we welcomed a new conductor, Mr Albert Tay.
The Choir staged three performances throughout the
year, all well received by Club Members. Although there
was a growth in the number of participants, there was,
however a lack of men coming forward to join in the
singing, and it is our hope that we will see more of them
this year.
Moving forward, 2015 will be an important milestone
as we celebrate the Club’s 150th Anniversary and the
Nation’s 50th year of independence. Plans are now in
place for the celebrations, and the Choir will be staging
several performances for the occasion. We hope that

On another note, the Gourmet Section will be making
a trip to Japan in early April this year. One of the
highlights of the trip will be Cherry Blossom Viewing,
where we will immerse in the beauty of Cherry Blossoms
this season. Following after we will travel through the
Botchan Train to Dogo Onsen for a relaxing night at
the hot spring. The visit to the unique Towel Museum

will be fascinating for many as we will get to sample
freshly brewed beer as well as understand how beer is
made here. With these activities as a sneak preview, we
will definitely look forward to this Gourmet and sightseeing trip in April that will bring about much excitement

THE IMPORTANCE OF FOAM ROLLING IN YOUR WORKOUT ROUTINE
If you’ve been to the gym, you may have noticed people rolling around on foam tubes and grimacing in pain.

down finding a tender spot and holding.
While it doesn’t look all that inviting, a few minutes on a
foam roller can actually help you feel and perform better in
your workouts by improving flexiblilty, movement efficiency,
and muscle recovery.
How do I do it?
Start with a softer foam roller while controlling the amount
of pressure you apply and working your way to a firmer
roller. Slowly roll over a problematic area. When you come
to painful spot, hold that spot while relaxing and breathing
deeply for 20–30 seconds. Continue to roll slowly until you
find another tender spot, hold and breathe.
When do I do it?
Foam rolling can be done at the beginning and end of a
workout. Pre-workout rolling should focus on the problematic
spots while rolling at the end of a workout can be done on
the major muscles that were worked and before stretching
and cool down. By taking a few minutes to foam roll, you can

ANNUAL COSMO BALL
AT THE BRITISH CLUB
The British Club held the annual Cosmo Ball on
Saturday, 6 December, at the British Club. The Club
hosted a great night, which was very well attended
and a great success. At the end of the night, a short
congratulatory video was included to The Tanglin
Club Cosmo winners from none other than Nicol
David, the world’s number one women’s squash
player, which was a great surprise.
Given it was near the Christmas period, some of
the team decided to dress up as Santa, with some
of the team receiving the winners cup. The Captain
had such a good night he woke up the next morning
having left the winners cup and spent a good few
panicky hours trying to remember where it was,
only to see Craig Telmar from the British Club
delivering it safely back the following day.

WITS TENNIS–TANGLIN TIGERS
After a shaky start, when the team was struggling with absences
and injuries, the Tanglin Tigers rallied enough to finish 5th out
of 10 teams in Beta division this season. As the standard of play
seems to increase year on year, we enjoyed some really good
matches and it is always interesting to play against other teams
and to get to know them over refreshments after the games.
We would like to thank Esther for being captain and the Club
for supporting us and organising snacks for our home matches.
Registration has already taken place for Spring 2015, with
matches starting early February. I’m delighted to say we have
some new players joining us, and we hope to improve on our
performance next season.

WITS TENNIS–ALLEZ ALLEZ
What a good season it was for Allez Allez Tanglin to be ranked third in
B division this 2014 autumn season. Without our captain, Jill Robinson,
we could not have achieved it. In addition, our new team members;
Elizabeth Emerson, Caroline Chou, Lilian Hon, and Heidy Calonge Talaver
(who will be co-captain next season) contributed a lot to win. Moreover,
we thank our team coach, Pierre, and the Club staff, such as Cielito, who
supported us well. It is good news that two teams above us moved up
to Alpha division as a result of this season. Next season will be our turn
to go up to the higher division. If anyone is brave enough to play tough
matches with us, please contact Tanglin B team.

THE PENANG SPORTS CLUB VS THE TANGLIN CLUB
As promised, the Penang Sports Club brought a team of
sixteen members to visit us on Saturday, 13 December. It
was around this time last year that we had a friendly with
them on their home ground.
The weather looked fine for a start, but as soon as play
started, the skies opened up. Fortunately, we had our two
indoor courts to save the day. Our visitors expressed their
appreciation of this luxury as well as the experience of
playing on our Rebound Ace court surfaces. Some of the
matches were rather hotly contested. However, our
guests won the day, albeit narrowly.
After the games, both hosts and guests mingled, enjoying
the food and drinks laid out at Level U1. It was a fun
afternoon and we hope more of these reciprocal visits will
be forthcoming.

Dr Eileen Chanin is a Sydney-based historian and writer. She
is currently the Menzies Fellow of the Menzies Centre at King’s
College London, and Honorary Senior Lecturer at the University
of New South Wales College of Fine Arts, Sydney.
Her most recent book, Limbang Rebellion: 7 Days in December
1962, deals with an early episode in the Indonesia-Malaysia
Confrontation of 1963–1966. The book is co-published in
Australia, Singapore, and the United Kingdom.
Eileen is an award-winning author whose earlier books include
Book Life: The Life and Times of David Scott Mitchell (1836–
1907) and Degenerates and Perverts: The 1939 Herald Exhibition
of French and British Contemporary Art.
She is currently writing a biography of Australia House in London
to mark its centenary in 2018.

Eileen Chanin’s Limbang Rebellion: 7 Days in December 1962 has
been honoured by the Royal Marines Historical Society with the 2014
Literary Award. Here are some of the reviews:
The book highlights true heroes such as police personnel and ordinary
people who did extraordinary things to protect and save others in great
danger. - Borneo Post
This is a human tale of courage, fortitude and bravery…It is a gripping
tale of seven dramatic days that helped quell the initial North Kalimantan
National Army efforts of taking over the whole of Borneo Island. It was
the beginning of a wider and longer campaign that came to be called
Confrontation. - Globe and Laurel
It also gives an engrossing account of the bold commando assault
on Limbang. Chanin’s account of the improvised attack, the Marines
traveling by night in two commandeered barges, will delight any military
buff. - Sydney Morning Herald
With an impressive command of detail, the author has gathered witness
accounts from her own interviews and a treasure trove of archival material
that give the reader a visceral understanding of what it was like to be a
prisoner, and what it was like to be a soldier seeing action for the first
time. - The Australian
