President’s Award 2014 Marge Luedeke
Service Award 2014 Tom Hawkins
Friends of Burlington 2014 Bill & Dolly Spiegelhoff
Volunteer of the Year 2014 Jerry Koch
The President’s Award is given to a
member of the community who demonstrates outstanding dedication and
extraordinary effort on behalf of the
chamber and community.
Our chamber president, Barb Bakshis
was honored to present this year’s
President’s Award to Marge Luedeke.
Marge has lived in Burlington for over 12
years and is a customer service representative for Badgerland Financial specializing in rural lending. Her strong volunteerism has included 10 years with Make
a Wish Foundation and as a pre-school
JAM leader at St. Charles Catholic
Church & School. Marge served on the
Chamber Board as an Honorary Director
in 2013. She
readily offered her help when the board
suggested the monthly section in Discover
the Treasures known as “Business by the
Block”. She has been instrumental in seeing this through since it began over a
year and half ago. Continuing her service
to our Chamber and Community, Marge
is also a Chamber Ambassador.
Thank you, Marge!
The Service Award is presented to
recognize the member of the community
who has helped at the Chamber of
Commerce the most throughout the year.
The Burlington Chamber was
pleased to present the Service Award to
Tom Hawkins and the Southern Lakes
Blue Devils. Tom Hawkins & the
Southern Lakes Blue Devils is the owner
of this semi-pro football team. The Blue
Devils have served the Burlington Area
Chamber of Commerce as a volunteer for
many years. The team members have
volunteered many hours at Chamber
events, such as the Annual Christmas
Parade, Chocolate Extravaganza, and
Home Expo. Tom’s commitment and
service throughout the years to the
Chamber and to the community of
Burlington are the reasons that we are
honoring him.
Thank you, Tom!
The Friend of Burlington Award honors anyone who has made a significant
and notable contribution to our community, in a manner that exemplifies leadership, community service, and involvement.
The Chamber was pleased to present
the Friend of Burlington Award to Bill &
Dolly Spiegelhoff. Bill and Dolly are
equally committed to the community of
Burlington and are involved with many
local organizations. For countless years
of cherished memories, responses of
excited children, and priceless recollections for generations of parents, Bill and
Dolly have exemplified the spirit of
Christmas at the Santa Chalet. It is our
pleasure to recognize their self-less giving, time, kindness and visits to nursing
homes and hospitals and so very much
more.
Thank you, Bill and Dolly!
The Volunteer of the Year Award is
awarded to a member of the
community who has volunteered the
most time and energy on behalf of the
Chamber.
The BACC was honored to
present the Volunteer of the Year Award
to Jerry Koch. Jerry has been a tremendous help in his efforts for the Chamber.
He began serving on the Chamber board
in 2004 and became Vice President of
Community Development in 2006. He
continued as Chamber President in 2013
and his dedication has always been
apparent. Jerry has chaired the Home
Expo event for multiple years, assisting
with the auction, golf outing and has
been instrumental in all that we do.
Thank you, Jerry!

Family Fun – indoor
or outdoor
When the weather outside is
frightful, there are plenty of
delightful ways to bring the family fun indoors in Burlington.
From family-friendly performances to fun active adventures, here are a few ideas to keep the whole family
entertained and active.
And, let’s not overlook outdoor adventures too!
Just a few ideas to get you started: See a performance at
one of our area theaters; get up early and watch the sunrise; enjoy coffee or an espresso at the coffee shop; head
out to the Jaycees Ice Fishing Derby; visit the stores and
find out just how much they have to offer; be amazed at
the fun-filled museums from history to chocolate to spinning tops in Burlington; start planning your next family
reunion; relax by reading a book at our local library; see a
movie at the Plaza Theatre; take a walk with someone special; explore the area and snap a few pictures; go out for
a Friday night fish fry; star gaze on a clear winter night;
make a snowman, snow angel or snow sculpture; snowmobile in and around our area; try ice skating at Echo Lake;
walk through the woods and look for antler sheds in late
winter; stop by the Visitor Center and pick up all you need
to plan your vacation in Wisconsin; go out to eat – just
decide if you want Mexican, Italian, Oriental or American
cuisine; take your sweetie to a romantic dinner for
Valentine’s Day; build a snow fort; reminisce as you browse
the antique store; sign up for a class; practice your aim at
the Burlington Conservation Club; experience the serene
beauty of our winter by cross country skiing or snowshoeing; have a snowball fight; attend your favorite local
church service; pretend its summertime and enjoy a
Wisconsin bratwurst cooked on the grill; go bowling at
Town and Country Lanes; spend a quiet afternoon in front
of the fireplace; plan a movie night; bird watch – after you
feed the feathered friends; pull out a deck of cards or
board game; pick up some postcards and write a note to
family and friends; or choose a sunny day and stroll back
in time on Burlington’s historical walking tour.
When visiting the Burlington area, you'll never be at a loss
for something to do. Sometimes it's hard to know what's out
there. Our staff at the Chamber of Commerce has some
ideas and this list will help you get going. And, you’ll notice
that many of these activities are entirely free! Still not sure?
Visit our website at www.burlingtonchamber.org for the full
calendar.
Burlington’s Tipster Program
You can help keep our community safe – through the
TIPSTER PROGRAM. Funded by business and citizen
donations, the program is used as an aid to area law enforcement that may help solve crimes committed in our area.
Informants remain ANONYMOUS. Through the Burlington
Police Department and Burlington Area Chamber of Commerce, rewards are
awarded for information when it leads to an arrest, a conviction or in some

Home Improvement
Shopping Made
Easy – by Tom Lebak
Although that whole internet shopping thing appears to have caught on, every March the
Burlington Chamber of Commerce gives area consumers looking for home improvement and
gardening ideas an opportunity to shop old school at the Home and Garden Show. Last
year’s article regarding the Home and Garden Show was directed toward the vendor and why
participating was a valuable investment of their time and money. This time around, let’s consider the opportunities that abound for the home consumer.
First and foremost, the event date of March 21st makes it the ideal time to dream a little of
the coming spring and to start to solidify those project plans for 2015. At the same time, the
weather can be such that an afternoon indoors at Burlington High School talking with home
improvement experts, taking in free seminars and enjoying the Chocolate Extravaganza can be
just the ticket to shake off the last of the winter doldrums.
For the home owner, the Home and Garden show is about as hands-on as one can get
short of the improvement professional coming over and giving you a hand. This is the environment where no question is a bad one and where there is plenty of time for a thorough discussion on the how-to of getting your project done. This is the place where you can pursue an idea
with a knowledgeable individual unencumbered by the interruptions and general busyness
that can happen during a typical business day at the store. This is the opportunity to explore, to
learn, to evaluate and maybe even to buy. And with over 100 vendors, it is an ideal venue to
compare the competition and make your best deal.
Also available in the category of learning opportunities at the show is the variety of workshops that will be presented for attendees. With topics ranging from camping and outdoors to
do-it-yourself tips to gardening and electronics and all presented by experts in those fields,
there is bound to be a nugget of wisdom ready to be taken home and used.
Finally, and certainly not to be overlooked in Chocolate City, there is the Chocolate
Extravaganza which also kicks-off at 9:00a.m. Here you can indulge your sweet tooth while
watching local celebrities try their hand at winning the cupcake decorating contest. Other food
vendors will be on hand as well to guarantee a full, well-rounded, hopefully productive and
fun day. Again, the expo is on Saturday March 21, 2015 from 9:00a.m. - 3:00p.m. at
Burlington High School, 400 McCanna Parkway. See you there!

Web Design Tricks:
User Centered Design
Have you ever heard of UI Design? UI stands for user
interface. Designing with your users in mind is one of the
best things you can do when creating a new website or
application. The best sites are not made because they look
good; the best sites are made to work best for the site USERS.
4 best practices when designing for users

1. Know who they are!
Your goals need to be the same as those of your users. If they are going to be
looking for a phone number when they visit your site, make that your goal when
designing.

2. Be consistent and look for patterns.
Humans are creatures of habit. They will work best if you use similar language,
layout and design throughout your entire site. Your users will feel comfortable if
they see elements they already have experience using.
3. Have a clear hierarchy.
Know what is most important to the site users. As designers it is our job to use
fonts and colors to guide users along to the end goal.
RECIPE OF THE MONTH:
submitted by Jeff Koenen
I wish I could say this was my recipe, but I cannot. I have a
friend who needs to have a Gluten Free, Dairy Free and Nut
Free diet, and it is hard to find good tasting food out there. I
made these cookies for Reineman’s Ladies night and was told
they were very good, so I thought I would share with others.
4. Piece together the puzzle.
Sugar & Spice Cookies
If you force pieces together, the result will be a jumbled picture that doesn’t
make sense to your users. If you’re missing pieces the picture will be incomplete
and users will feel lost. But, if you put the puzzle together correctly, those
separate pieces disappear and users will be left to enjoy the full image.

1 ½ Sticks Diary Free Margarine
2 ½ Teaspn Baking Soda
½ Cup Granulated Sugar
1 Teaspn Ground Cinnamon
½ Cup Brown Sugar, Packed
1 Teaspn Ground Ginger
¼ Cup Unsweetened Applesauce
¼ Teaspn Ground Nutmeg
¼ Cup Organic Honey
¼ Teaspn Salt
2 ¾ Cups Gluten-Free Flour Blend
SUGAR COATING
1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
¼ Cup Granulated Sugar
1 Teaspn Ground Cinnamon
Makes 2-3 Dozen Cookies
1. Preheat oven to 350* and line baking sheets with parchment paper
2. In a mixer, using a paddle blade, combine the Dairy Free Margarine,
Granulated Sugar and Brown Sugar until light and fluffy. Add
Unsweetened Applesauce and Organic Honey and Mix well.
3. In a medium bowl, combine Gluten-free Flour, Baking Soda, Ground
Cinnamon, Ground Ginger, Ground Nutmeg and Salt with a wire whisk.
Add dry mixture to the Dairy Free Margarine mixture and mix well.
4. In a small bowl combine the SUGAR COATING mixture with a wire
whisk and mix well.
5. Roll cookie dough into 1-inch balls. Roll the cookie balls in the SUGAR
COATING mixture and place on parchment paper.
6. Bake 12-15 minutes, until the cookies are lightly golden brown on top. Let
cool completely on baking sheets.
(When I made these, I let the cookie dough set for about 20 minutes in the refrigerator. I also
didn’t roll the dough in the sugar coating. I sprinkled the sugar coating on the parchment
paper, pressed the dough on the sugar coating, then sprinkled more onto the top of the dough.)
Jeffrey Koenen
Jeff Koenen, a lifelong native of Burlington, is the owner of
Reineman’s True Value. The store has been in Burlington for over
100 years. It is a retail hardware store selling products from pets to
sports, hardware to fishing and so much more. They also have an
extensive rental department. Jeff always likes to say, “You name it,
we probably sell it.” In his free time, Jeff enjoys working with the
Burlington Rescue Squad and riding around with his wife on their
Harleys. Jeff is currently serving on the Burlington Chamber of Commerce Board of
Directors as well as being very involved with the Burlington Home & Garden Show.
He hopes to see Burlington continue to grow and be vibrant in the area.

Remember When . . .
T
he boys and girls of St. Mary’s parish
pause at the intersection of Geneva
(nowMilwaukee Avenue), McHenry, and
Jefferson streets on October 26, 1920, while
participating in a parade celebrating the 75th
anniversary of the parish’s founding in the mid1840s. The parade, which passed through the
principal streets of Burlington on the way to St.
Mary’s Church, was headed by the Burlington
Harmony Band and followed by city officials,
old settlers, and visiting priests in autos, the
Knights of Columbus drum corps, and the
school children and members of the
congregation and its various societies. Rev.
Joseph Van Treeck, St. Mary’s pastor at that
time, is seen in the center of the photo standing
between the two lines of marchers. Note also the
brick streets and the Interurban electric train
tracks on Geneva Street.
The photograph was taken by Otto
Heinemann, who had a photography studio in
downtown Burlington from 1915 through 1920.
The photo, one of a series that Heinemann took
of St. Mary’s Diamond Jubilee parade, was
donated to the Burlington Historical Society by
Gary Weis.
At the time of the parade, the building
shown in the triangle housed Schemmer and
Rossmiller’s Hillside Grocery store. Frank
Schemmer had purchased the property from
Henry Cook in 1875 as a site for a cobbling shop
and his family’s living quarters. In the early
1880s, Schemmer built an addition and started a
general store, selling groceries and dry goods. In
1894 Frank took his son, Charles, into the

grocery and dry goods business, with Charles
buying the business from his father in 1908.
Following Charles Schemmer’s death in
December 1913, his wife, Mary, sold an interest
in the store to her brother, George Rossmiller.
In 1921 Harry A. Terry, a World War I veteran
who had been a city mail carrier (and would
eventually return to that occupation), bought the
Hillside Grocery business from Schemmer and
Rossmiller. Terry also moved his family into the
living rooms in the back of the store. In 1925
Terry bought the property from the Frank
Schemmer estate.
In 1927 Terry leased part of the property to
the Deep Rock Oil Co., which built a gasoline
filling station on the premises. Terry also razed
part of the store building. The Deep Rock station
opened in 1928 with Christ R. Johnson as
manager. Later in 1928 Terry leased his Hillside
Grocery store to George Schumann and Leo
Schenk for a 5-year term. Schumann and Schenk
dissolved their partnership in Hillside Grocery
in July 1933, with Schumann continuing the
business under the name Schumann's I.G.A.
Store. Later in 1933, when the 5-year lease with
Terry expired, Schumann moved his grocery
business across the street to the Yanny building
at the corner of Jefferson and McHenry streets.
In 1934 Mr. and Mrs. Francis J. Schiller rented
the store portion of the Terry building and
opened a recreation center offering billiards and
other games and a soda fountain. The Schillers’
Dine-a-Mite Club lasted only a few months. In
1935 Henry C. Lang and Marvin Whitton opened
a heating, plumbing, and refrigeration business
in the store area. Joseph F. Voelkering also
moved his sewing machine, vacuum cleaner, and
washing machine exchange into the building.
Whitton moved his appliance business to a shop
on Chestnut Street in 1937 and Lang moved his
plumbing business to his Chestnut Street home
in 1938.
Terry then had the frame store and residence
building torn down and a brick filling station
erected, with the Terry family moving to a house
on Schemmer Street. The station was leased to
the Sinclair Oil Co., which opened the filling
station in December 1938 with Bernard Kempken
in charge. Irvin Anderson succeeded Kempken
in 1942 and operated the Sinclair station and
service garage until 1946 when he sold the
business to Albert Horter and Ernest Polze.
In 1954 Francis Menheer, who had bought
the business from Albert Horter, sold it to Walter
Yonk, Jr., and Robert Martinson. The second
photo, taken by Emmett Raettig, shows the
station in 1956. Yonk and Martinson ran the
business until 1961 when they sold it to Fred
Beck, who ran the business until 1972.
Since that time, businesses in the building
have included AWD Tire Sales, AWD
AutoCenter, Bob Koehn’s Hillside Auto Center,
and Wilson Classic Car center owned by Errol
Wilson and Lance Poltrock. The building is
currently occupied by State Auto Sales.
Burlington Historical Museum and
Pioneer Cabin are staffed by volunteers.
