FROM THE RECTORY
Dear Friends,
Mary and I were recently given a book of daily reflections written by
Simon Guillebaud who has worked in Burundi for many years.
He tells the story of a rich man who enjoyed collecting rare works of art.
His son was tragically killed in Vietnam saving another soldier’s life.
Months later the man whose life was saved visited the grieving father and
presented him with a painting he’d done: “Your son was my friend; I loved
him. He spoke so highly of you as a father. It’s not great art, but I painted
him one day in the jungle. It’s for you.” The father greatly treasured the
painting of his son.
A few years later the rich man died and all his works of art were sold. The
auction began with the picture of the son. The experts complained that it
wasn’t real art. The auctioneer asked for bids, but nobody responded.
Eventually, a frail old man who had been the deceased man’s gardener,
offered $10; it was all he could afford. There were no other bids: it was
his.
With that, the auctioneer laid down his gavel and declared that the auction
over; there was confusion and outrage. He explained that the deceased
man’s will stipulated that whoever bought the painting of the son would
inherit the entire estate, including all the other paintings; “the man who
took the son gets everything!”
Like the auctioneer, God asks today, “Who will take the son?” Whoever
takes the son gets everything. As Jesus himself said, “God so loved the
world that he gave his one and only Son, that whosoever believes in him
shall not, perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16).

The 1st battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment were in the trenches at Kemmel, about six miles
south west of Ypres, with regular periods of rest at Locre. Things remained fairly quiet, and
although there was daily shelling or sniper fire, and a good deal of rifle fire at night, there
were few casualties.
The 2nd Battalion of the Wiltshire Regiment was at Fleurbaix, in France. All was pretty
quiet there too, but the battalion HQ at Fleurbaix was shelled on 19 th February, and
rendered uninhabitable. They took over a large house near the Brigade HQ the next day, but
this was bombed on 22nd February, and three men were wounded.
There were no casualties from any of our villages during February.
Lyn Dyson 01380 813943 e-mail: [email protected]
The Parish Council had met at the Workmen’s Hall on January 20 th. The Chairman had
received a letter from the Weekly Dispatch asking how many men from the Parish were
serving in the forces up to the end of January. A medallion would be presented to the
village with the highest percentage of serving men. (Knowlton won the prize with 12 out of
39 enlisted, all of them survived the war). £13 was granted to the Fire Brigade Committee.
It was agreed that up to 25 shillings would be spent on a trunk to store the Parish papers and
books.

This term, at Lavington Pre-school, we are delighted to have 3 new
starters, Jack, Edee and Jessica, we welcome them and their families
to our Pre-school. Everyone has settled in well after the Christmas
holiday and has come back refreshed and ready to have fun
In term 3 the children’s investigations have been centred on ‘Butterflies,
dragons, and things that fly’ and it has inspired lots of imagination and
creativity. We have made a large painted dragon and butterfly for our
wall display and we have made lots of flying animals using cardboard tubes and ribbon.
We have heard stories about flying things and danced like butterflies in the classroom.
This term has also seen the introduction of Phonics sheets for the children who are
getting ready to go to school in September this year. This will prepare them for phonics
in their Reception year. We will also be continuing to do our phonics sessions with all the
children in the pre-school as part of our daily routine.
We are planning lots of exciting visitors to the children before Easter. ACTIVE
Trowbridge will be visiting us regularly throughout the term, as usual, and we also have
visits planned from the police and Pippa from Mossy Green Feet.

TOP TIP: As part of our monthly entry we have decided to incorporate a top tip to help
extend your child’s learning and development. Our Top Tip for this month ties in nicely
with our theme of dragons and animals that fly and is from ‘Expressive arts and design:
Being imaginative’ 40 – 60 months ‘Create imaginary words to describe, for example,
monsters or other strong characters in stories and poems.’
2 YEAR OLD FUNDING: In April 2014 the Government broadened the criteria for 2
year old funding for up to 15 hours per week and you may now find that you fall into the
eligibility criteria if you have a child between 24 - 36 months old. If you think you
might be eligible, you will need to complete a funding form:

Happy New Year on behalf of all the pupils and staff at
St Barnabas CEVC Primary School.
This term we are learning about Explosions. Our oldest
children have been finding out about Volcanoes around
the world; where they are, how they are formed and what
happens when they explode. They have been amazed at the events in Pompeii nearly 2000
years ago and how the city has been preserved under the ash. They are very excited as they
create adventure films using the iPads.
The younger children have focused particularly on volcanoes in Japan and enjoyed the
opportunity to ask our visitor questions about life in Japan for children. This included finding
out about how children are evacuated if there is an earthquake warning using their cushions as
head protection!
Our theme for Collective Worship this term is ‘Compassion’ so we are tying this in with our
Explosion theme as we think about people who may have been affected by natural disasters
around the world.
One of the many benefits of being linked with the church is that we are able to take part in
Open The Book. Open The Book is an act of worship which is told by members of our local
church community who read and act out stories from the Bible. They are trained and include
the children in their storytelling. The children absolutely love these sessions and are eager to
become Year 6 so that they can take part. A huge thanks to all the members of Open The
Book who give up their time.

The Alabaré Annual Sleep Out in Salisbury and Trowbridge
Raising essential funds to support the homeless using Drop-in Centres in Salisbury
and Trowbridge. Users come from all walks of life, benefitting from hot meals and
drinks, clothing and washing facilities. Just as important is the practical, nonjudgemental support and advice available on health, housing, employment and
training. The Drop-in Centres are funded entirely through the generosity of
individuals and organisations but, faced with a greater number of vulnerable adults
calls on the service are increasing.
In the last three years, some 370 willing supporters, many from local churches,
schools, businesses and community groups, have experienced what it is like to sleep
outdoors in winter on the cold, hard ground of the Cathedral Cloisters or at the
United Church, Trowbridge. One night is long enough - what if you faced it night after
night? On average, homeless people die 30 years before the national average.

¼ teaspoon cinnamon
Vegetable oil for frying
Sift the flour, salt and
cinnamon into a mixing
bowl, stir in the caster
sugar, then make a
well in the centre of the
flour.
Into the well, add the
mashed banana and
about one third of soya
milk. Stir the milk and
banana into the flour,
gradually adding more
milk and stirring in
(stirring the milk in
gradually avoids lumps
forming).
The batter needs to be
fairly thin. Then stir in
the vanilla extract.
Heat oil in a non-stick,
heavy-bottomed, flat
frying pan until it has
just started to smoke.
Pour out the excess oil
from the pan into a
heat-proof mug and
ladle in some batter.
Cook the until the
visible side starts to
change colour and
blister, and the
underside is lightly
browned. Turn it over,
brown, then eat it hot.

Lent and Fasting
As with many religious rules, they are based on common sense and fairness, as life was
lived many years ago. In an age when much of the livestock was killed and preserved
before winter, a rule against the lord taking the breeding stock to eat, or banning the
peasants eating their stock at the coldest time of the year, kept agriculture going. In the
same way, before yeast was used in bread making, a sour dough leven was used to make
the bread tasty and pleasant to eat. The sour dough is a liquid mix based on wholemeal
barley, fruit or honey, and water stored in the warm to ferment. If it is allowed to get
cold, instead of the good bacteria, bad bacteria take over the solution and this can make
people very ill.

The weather has unfortunately not been kind to us and some fixtures have been

The ladies played their first league match of 2015 at Marlborough on a very boggy
pitch, well done to Carmen Hall and Eleanor Cheetham for their magnificent
goals. The team will play the first round of the County League cup against
Marlborough so should be an entertaining match.
A warm welcome to our newly appointed Child Welfare Officer, Louise Mason. As
a qualified teacher Louise will bring a great deal of experience to the role and

The new head teacher of Lavington School hopes a sixth form will be open by
September 2017.
Sarah Lowkis, who has just taken over at the village secondary school in
Market Lavington, near Devizes, is optimistic that this time the school’s dream
of gaining a sixth form will be realised.
Mrs Lowkis, 50, who moved to the top job after seven years as deputy, said: “I
really do think this time it will happen. There is a new stream of funding
available and we have the sort of results that make us eligible.”
In the past, the school has come close to getting funding for a sixth form, but
the plans fell at the last hurdle. Now, after a meeting with an advisor to a senior
education department figure, Mrs Lowkis is pleased with the outcome.
She said: “He thought we should get the money, as we are a successful, rural
academy.”
She said she hoped work on the sixth form, costing about £3.5 million, could
start in September 2016.
It is one of three priorities set by the mother-of-three, who has been at
Lavington School since 2005.
The others are to form stronger links with the area’s primary schools and be
graded outstanding by Ofsted. She said the school was on track to be
outstanding in all four areas rated by inspectors. Last year, it was outstanding
in two and good in the others.
Exam results have regularly been in the top five per cent nationally and Mrs
Lowkis believes current Year 11s are on course to do better than last year’s
group.

A Message from Richard Gamble
Wiltshire Councillor for The Lavingtons & Erlestoke Division
Money seems to feature rather highly as a subject for consideration at this time
of year.
Dauntsey’s school hosts an evening with
Shabana Basij-Rasikh.
Shabana Basij-Rasikh is co-founder and President of the first all-girl
boarding school in Kabul, Afghanistan. In 2008 SOLA started with four
students. Today, 34 students aged 11 to 19 representing all major
ethnic groups, religious sects and tribes, and 14 out of 34 Afghan
provinces attend SOLA's preparatory program in Kabul. In recognition
of her work, Shabana was named by CNN's Leading Women among
the most inspiring women of 2014.
Shabana will be speaking at 7.30pm in the William Dauntsey Room,
Dauntsey’s School on Monday 23rd February. For further details,
please contact Demelza Hills: [email protected] and phone
Dauntsey’s reception to confirm your place.
LAVINGTON & DISTRICT WWI COMMEMORATION GROUP
We are very pleased to announce the publication of "Market Lavington
and Easterton in World War One". The book has been written by
Roger Frost, Market Lavington Museum Curator and produced by the
Museum for the people of Market Lavington and Easterton to mark the
100th anniversary of the start of the 'War to end all Wars' in 1914.
The book has been funded by kind donations and fundraising events
organised by the Commemoration Group. Between now and the end
of February every home in Market Lavington and Easterton should
receive a free copy. Additional copies can be purchased from the
Market Lavington Museum, please contact Roger at the following
email: [email protected]
The group meets every month and we would welcome residents to
come along and find out what commemoration activities are planned
for this year through to 2018. The next meeting is at The Old School,
Tuesday 24th February at 7pm.
At one level you are (perhaps that should be “I am”) coping with the costs of
Christmas which, like most good causes, does not come cheap.
At another level, you may have just submitted your tax return and HMRC could
be smiling at receipt of more of your hard-earned cash.
It can be tough for businesses too. If you are a retailer, this is when you have to
pay the suppliers of stock you may or may not have sold in the pre- or postChristmas rush.
Money features equally large in the mind of the public sector, although the
chemistry is slightly different. Public sector budgets work strictly to an annual
cycle that runs (to all intents and purposes) from April in one year to March in
the next year. As a general rule, any allocated funds not spent by the end of
March cannot be carried over to the following year, so some public institutions
may be found to be fairly extravagant in this season. I am an admirer of
Prudence but, sadly, she sometime goes on holiday at this time of year.
Of course, Wiltshire Council cannot be accused of extravagance and has saved
some £100m of expenditure in the past few years by judicious management and
without significant loss of services. The miracle is that we have done this while
keeping Council Tax unchanged for 5 years. This represents a saving over the
period of £782 pounds for a Band D property. So when you look at your bank
statement, please consider how much worse it could have been if Wiltshire
Council had not tightened its own belt over the period.
More savings must be made in the year ahead and Wiltshire Council is now
discussing the budget for 2015/16. We must tighten the belt by a further £30
million, which will be tough but not impossible.
The public sector is sometimes accused of being flabby and self-indulgent but
there is no doubt in my mind that financial discipline has made Wiltshire Council
more fit for purpose. I only wish my own personal regime had been as effective
in improving my physique!
You may contact me about this or any other matter by email to
[email protected] or by phone on 07762 018209.

Since our last publication the Christmas break and
numerous game postponements means that there is not a
lot of reporting this month. This is with the exception of the
Sunday Adult team who continue to perform well in their
league with 2 very good away wins in January so far : 1-5
against FC North Wiltshire, and 0-8 against the Mallard FC.
Below are some interesting trivia you may find interesting on the English Premier
League today (current at start of season):
Of the 10 players to take 10 or more penalties, Leighton Baines (Everton
superstar), is the only one to score with each one.
Jamie Carragher scored as many goals for Spurs as he did for Liverpool
(own goals…..could only happen to a Liverpool player…)
Only 5 players have scored a hat-trick coming on as a substitute in a
game: Lukaku (Everton), Solskjaer, Hasselbaink, Earnshaw, Adebayor.
57% of the teams being promoted to the top flight through play-offs have
been relegated the following season.
February 2003, Man Utd v Fulham, was the last game where no substitutes
were used. (Before August 1965 substitutes were not allowed in English
football).
Everton have competed in the top flight of English football for a record 111
seasons, playing more league games than any other team.
Worton and Cheverell FC ‘The Badgers’ – are one of the top flight Village
teams in the area.
