To begin the new Junior Informer section, we have a little
wordsearch puzzle for you to solve!
Amongst the jumble of letters, we have hidden the names
of 11 South East fisheries. All you have to do is find them!
Once you have completed the puzzle, either photocopy
the page or cut out the page from the magazine and send

A GUIDING STAR
Les Pearce is the man and the driving force behind the North
School's amazing programme to bring fishing into education.
Les is a lifelong angler and has a wealth of contacts within
fishing and his local angling society. Les told me how the
scheme works:
'' The North School in
Ashford has been
successfully
running
BTEC (Business and
Technology Education
Council) courses in Fish
Husbandry and Fishery
Management for the
last three years, helping
many disaffected students to achieve qualifications, where
they might of otherwise failed. These courses offer students
time to develop as young people and give them a range of
skills within the management of a local fishery under
guidance. The projects have also included helping in
community funded programmes within the local area and
these have been highly successful and covered by the press.
In September 2015, we will launch our Level 3 BTEC Fishery
Management and Level 2 BTEC Fish Husbandry courses. These
courses are both coursework based over two years
respectively and all work is assessed by independent and
external assessors with no examinations. The Level 3 course
will be equivalent to a double A level qualification, while the
Level 2 course a double GCSE grade.
Once accepted onto either course (dependant on GCSE
results), students will gain many new practical skills in areas
of Construction, Civil Engineering, Ecology, Fishery
Management, Coppicing and Team Building along with
learning techniques in both coarse and fly fishing. These skills
have been inbuilt into the schemes of work to encourage
students to be more assertive and independent within their
While each course
differs in the variety
and volume of work
that is required, all

assessment and given
a grade value of Pass,
Merit or Distinction at
the end of each unit.
Completing the Diploma course at Level 3, students are able
to continue in education or possibly find work within the Land
Based Sector, of which there are many opportunities. As a
school, we are able to offer potential employers good
references and contacts throughout the industry.
We are currently looking for potential students to fill a limited
number of places. We have access to a 23 acre site with a full
range of managerial studies to compliment the course. We are
currently negotiating with other clubs within Kent, one of
which has already invited our school another 10 lakes, to assist
with their management.
If you would like to apply for a place on either of September's
courses, it is advisable that you initially contact the North
School by email, telephone or internet and read the prospectus
for entry requirements. As we are the only school to have these
courses within their curriculum, you may be eligible to study
alternative post 16 courses that would complement your
Certificate or Diploma in Fishery Management.''
After visiting the North School and meeting with Les Pearce
and his students, I was sincerely impressed by his commitment
and passion for angling. This infectious enthusiasm had
certainly been passed on to his students, who were all most
eager to show me their coursework and discuss fishing!
If any young people might be contemplating a career within
this area, I would strongly urge them to have a look at the
fantastic opportunities that are available at the forward
thinking North School.
