It is a holiday of light and singing, and sharing good food and gifts. The larger culture though has made it seem a bigger, louder holiday than it traditionally has been. We have other holidays where big and loud are more organically the case. In fact, we will celebrate one of them next month when Purim arrives! Certainly, Purim can get loud. We need to drown out the name of the hated Haman during the reading of the Magillah. We are also supposed to drink so much that we can no longer differentiate between Mordechai and Haman. And food and gifts? Purim combines them in the Shalach Manot tradition. Sending gifts of food to your friends and family in this way fulfills one of the mitzvot of the holiday. And no fear of it being influenced by large corporations or that half a “blue and silver” page in a magazine otherwise decked out in red and green for the sake of diversity. Sisterhood is able to help you with the mitzvah of Shalach Manot. We are once again pleased to offer our program to enable you to do this through partnership with us. You will find the form in this issue of the bulletin. It is also available on line, via email, and in the office. You can write in your own list. We will even prepare packages for you for outside friends and family. You can select the “Whole Congregation” option and share the warmth of this tradition with everyone in the First Hebrew Family. Sisterhood will also make sure that every child in our religious school gets a package. If you have any questions, please contact our Shalach Manot chair, Danielle Calo at divergirl26 @gmail.com. Please be sure to get your orders and payments in by February 13th. Then join Sisterhood as we mark a special holiday we have every month that we don’t usually remark much upon. On Thursday evening February 19th we will meet at FHC to celebrate Rosh Chodesh, the new moon/new month. If you attend Shabbat morning services, you have sometimes noted the announcement of the new month and that there are special prayers associated with it. Did you know that traditionally Rosh Chodesh has been associated with women? When you join us this month, we will go into how and why. Please join us on February 19th at 7:30 PM for this special program and, of course, coffee, tea, and dessert! We look forward to seeing you on the 19th and to helping you with the mitzvah of Shalach Manot. Shalom, Mindy Steinholz Sisterhood President FHC Babysitting Clearing House Who of us with young children isn’t looking for a few good babysitters? FHC will continue to list the names of our teenagers (and others) who would like to baby-sit for other families in the congregation. Of course, you will need to pay these sitters! FHC will provide this service purely as a convenience to its members and will take no responsibility for the individuals who offer their services here for pay. Email your names and telephone numbers to: [email protected] Babysitters now available: Madeline Cohen: Call or text Email corrections/additions to [email protected] February 2015 www.FirstHebrew.Org 3 Message from the Men’s Club A Happy Tu B'shvat to everyone, as this year the holiday falls on February 4th. Tu Bishvat's: derivation is simple the addition "Tu" which stands for the Hebrew letters Tet and Vav (9 and 6), hence the holiday occurring on the fifteenth day of Shevat. The holiday day is celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. We're simply including this to ask those who can, to make a donation to an organization that plants trees in Israel (anywhere else in the world is a mitzvah too). The Men's Club began the year at our downtown synagogue. It's an annual event/gesture from the Men's Club to continue to February 2015 have FHC members in our original synagogue just a couple of miles east of our main building. It's also one way we thank those who perform the mitzvah 'downtown' to keeping the daily minyon going. In late February the Men's Club will be crossing the river for a visit to West Point hockey. The event is on February 21st. There may still be tickets available and if interested please contact Steve Cohen ([email protected]) for availability and further information. We hope to see YOU at the next Men's Club event. Bruce Bleiweis If you would like to lead a part of the Shabbat morning service, take an aliyah, chant your Haftarah or lead an English reading, call the office or email Rabbi Paskind at [email protected]. We look forward to seeing you soon on Shabbat morning. www.FirstHebrew.Org 4 J L E (Jewish Learning Experience) A lovely Havdalah service was followed by a project for making own "Havdalah Kit". A fun, hands-on evening for all HELP THE SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE FEED THE HUNGRY In the Jewish tradition the Torah commands us to feed the hungry in many explicit passages. The social action committee is doing just that by preparing a luncheon meal for 75 people once a month on the second Monday for the soup kitchen in downtown Peekskill. The food is prepared in our own homes (or purchased) by our members, and left on the porch of the synagogue before 10 am on the day it is to be served. The soup kitchen picks up the food and serves it at lunchtime. You can help by providing scrip cards to supermarkets to purchase feed, make monetary donations to the social action committee, provide food, or help cook food. Get Well First Hebrew wishes a speedy recovery to: Morton Bensky, Leonard Brown, and Harold Krameisen. February 2015 If you would like to help in any of the ways enumerated above, you can send or leave donations in the office in an envelope labeled “social action committee”, put nonperishable food in the box in the coat closet labeled “social action committee” (please do not put it in the food pantry box ) or contact Fran Olmsted at [email protected] or 845 661 4691. "When you are asked in the world to come, 'What was your work?' and you answer: 'I fed the hungry,' you will be told: 'This is the gate of the Lord, enter into it, you who have fed the hungry'" (Midrash to Psalm 118:17). The Board of Education would like to honor our wonderful Bar/Bat Mitzvah students in a special way! We would like each student to submit a brief biography (5-7 sentences) to be placed in the synagogue bulletin. The biography could include information such as their Bar/BatMitzvah date, grade, school, outside interests, and should include a short description about his/her service project; you may also include a photograph if you like. The responsibility to write and submit this information belongs to the family of the child. Please do not cause unnecessary disappointment for your children when they don’t see their names in the bulletin with their classmates.
