Antelope-North
County Women’s Club
BY DORI KELSEY
The GFWC Antelope-North County
Women’s Club is celebrating Black History
month by telling the histories of three AfricanAmerican Women. Some you may know and
some you may not. All deserve to have their
stories told and be remembered.
The first woman is Madame C J Walker.
She is regarded as the first black or white
woman self-made millionaire in this country.
She made hair tonic for Black Women starting
in 1906. She spent her money helping young
black men and women in Southern colleges
and every year sent six young men to Tuskegee
Institute. She also gave $5,000, in today’s
money that would be $65,000, to the NAACP’s
National Conference on Lynching. She died
in 1919.
The second woman is Yvonne Brathwaite
Burke. She was born in Los Angeles, CA in
1932. She graduated from UCLA & USC
school of Law. MS. Burke was the first
African-American woman to represent the
West Coast in the US Congress. She served
from 1973 until 1978. Before that she was the
first African- American Woman elected to the
California State Assembly. Ms. Burke has run
for many offices most recently she has been a
Los Angeles County Supervisor. She currently
lives in Los Angeles County with her family.
The third is Brig. General Mary Knight
of the California National Guard. In February
2010, Brigadier General Knight became the
first Woman and first African - American
woman to be appointed 45th commander of
the California National Guard. She joined
the Guard in 1984 after being a member of
the Air Force. She joined the service at a time
when women did not think about becoming
a General but she worked hard and became
the California State’s 45th Commander of the
California National Guard.
Women can be whatever they want to be
but it does take hard work and dedication.
We are proud of these three women and the
other African-American pioneers we never
hear about. Google these ladies to learn more.
Our next meeting is February 14th at the
St Andrews church on Watt Ave at 11:30 am.
We would love to see you there. Find us on
Facebook at GFWC Antelope-North County
Women’s Club. To learn more about we check
out www.cfwc.org or www.gfwc.org. You can
always call Dori at 332-7133 or email us at

see you on the 14th.

Center Joint Unified School District
BY SCOTT A. LOEHR, Superintendent
With the implementation of the
Common Core State Standards, you
have likely seen and will continue
to experience noticeable changes in
what and how your child is learning
in school. The new state standards
will better prepare all of our students
for 21st century college and careers.
Mr.
The new state standards
• help students gain the
knowledge and skills they need to
think and work at that deeper level
• create opportunities for all students to
excel at reading, writing, speaking, listening,
language and math
• support students to think critically about
what they read and the math that they do
• allow teachers and students to focus
on fewer critical concepts in mathematics
more deeply
• build students’ abilities to apply what
they have learned to the real world
• ensure that all students can communicate
strong ideas and arguments in writing and react
powerfully to what they read
I am proud of the work being done in
classrooms across the district.
Teachers are diligently preparing
students for spring assessments
that will assess student achievement
of the new standards in a new
way. With these changes, your
student may likely struggle more
on this year’s assessment than in
Loehr
previous years. This is expected
and should not be cause for alarm.
With continued support of teachers,
parents and the community, students will
achieve at a higher level.
As we continue with our first year of
implementation of our CJUSD Local Control
Accountability Plan (LCAP), I am happy to
say that we are making some real progress in
attaining the goals we have established. As
required, we will be annually reviewing our
plan to ensure we are on the correct path to
bring success to the students of our district.
To know if we are still heading in the right
direction, we would like your input.
Please go to www.centerusd.org and click
the LCFF/LCAP button to provide your input
or thoughts on our current plan.

Dry Creek School District Update
2015-16 Program Planning, Budgeting, and Enrollment
BY BRAD TOOKER, Superintendent
By the end of the month,
students and staff in the Dry Creek
Joint Elementary School District
(DCJESD) will push into the
final trimester of the school year.
While students are rising to the
challenge of rigorous standards,
preparing to shine on state-wide
Mr.
tests, and anticipating end-ofthe-year activities, the district is
also finalizing programs, working
through the budget development process,
and projecting and planning for student
enrollment for the rapidly approaching 201516 school year.
With the approval of the DCJESD
Board in January, the full-day kindergarten
program piloted this year at Barrett Ranch,
Heritage Oak, Quail Glen, and Creekview
Ranch, will transition to an extended-day
pilot program for 2015-16.The extended-day
kindergarten pilot program will be one hour
and 15 minutes shorter than the full school day
at each of these schools. Half-day, AM/PM
Kindergarten classes will continue at Antelope
Meadows, Coyote Ridge, and Olive Grove
Elementary Schools for 2015-16. Evaluation
of the traditional half-day and current full-day
pilot programs will be combined with results
from the 2015-16 extended day pilot to design
kindergarten and transitional kindergarten
programs for students in the years to come.
Evaluation and adaptation of programs, like
the full and extended day kindergarten pilot,
are a part of our commitment to
continually identify and implement
innovative approaches for meeting
the needs of our students.
Also in January, DCJESD
began the budget development
process. The Board of Trustees
reviewed the Governor’s newly
released budget proposal, the
district’s enrollment and staffing
Tooker
projections, and potential budget
adjustments at the first of three
budget development workshops for 201516. Based on this preliminary review, there
is much to celebrate. DCJESD anticipates
the ability to not only support current
programs for the new school year, but to
continue enhancing offerings and developing
educational excellence for our community.
Specific budget recommendations by District
staff will be presented at the second budget
development workshop during the February
5th Board Meeting, and the Board will consider
adoption of budget recommendations at the
third budget development workshop, planned
for the February 19th Board Meeting.
In addition to program planning and
budgeting, February also brings enrollment
of current students into specific schools and
programs, followed by the registration of new
students. Each year, the District processes
more than 1,500 transfer requests to register
students into special programs and assist
families in coordinating school attendance

Help Cure Childhood Cancer!
If you could help find a cure for childhood
cancer, WOULD YOU? The simple answer
is OF COURSE you would. And this is how
you can. The Antelope Shave to Save Crew
is growing, but still needs your support. Luke
Campbell would like to invite you to join or
support the ANTELOPE SHAVE TO SAVE
CREW.
St. Baldrick’s Foundation is an organization
that raises funds benefitting childhood cancer
research. They do this by holding head-shaving
events and Luke Campbell has shaved his head
at the event at the Roseville Galleria for the past
7 years and the Antelope Shave to Save Crew
has raised over $18,000 for the Foundation.
The team had 30 members last year,
and we hope to double that this year. We
are inviting anyone who lives or works in the
Antelope and surrounding areas to join the
Crew: students of all ages, parents, teachers,
residents, community leaders and business
owners.
The event is being held on Saturday March
7, 2015 at the Roseville Galleria.
You can join the Crew by visiting
this web site: www.stbaldricks.org/teams/
antelopeshavetosave
You will then ask your friends, family, and
co-workers to pledge a donation on your head.
OR make a pledge on Luke’s head by
going to www.stbaldricks.org/participants/
lukecampbell or any of the other members
of the Crew, and come out to the event to
cheer them on.

elsewhere, toys, and furniture. In the back, she
has an art studio where she teaches classes for
adults and children. Her most popular class
is “Paint your Pet.”
Teaching art is an important passion to
her, as she believes that we all have an artist
within us. Prior to opening her store and studio,
she organized retreats for women to come
together and reconnect with the fearless child
artist within them. “Healing and nurturing
oneself is a gift of art.”
Marsha has found other unique ways
to incorporate her love of art and service in
the community. One of her most important
projects was organizing a community art quilt
exhibit, in which California artists could come
together and share their art, experience, and
knowledge. This was partnered with a goal
to inspire others to create 500 quilts for the
homeless. This has spilled over into heading
up humanitarian projects for destitute women
in 3rd world countries but also right here, at
the Sacramento Children’s Receiving Home.
Behind the scenes (but an integral part)
at Sparrow 5 is Marsha’s husband, Don, who
she has been married to for more than twenty
years. They have three kids and four grandkids.
Says Don, “Next time we are skipping kids and
going right to grandkids.”
Swing by Sparrow 5 to meet Marsha Taylor
and see what makes her such a fascinating
and wonderful member of our Antelope
community!
— ANTELOPE PROFILES —
Getting to know you...
Marsha Taylor — AKA “M”
BY LISA LISONBEE
We are thrilled
to introduce you
to another artist in
Antelope! Marsha
Taylor (Or “M” as
she is often called)
was born in Montana
but spent most of her
life in the Sacramento
“M” during one of
area and more than
her art classes.
two decades here in
Antelope. Visitors to
her home have enjoyed the visual delights
there as she incorporates artistic pieces into her
interior decorating. Interior decorating is not
only a talent but has been part of her livelihood
over the past several years. She has decorated
privately for residential, commercial, and
model homes.
But Marsha has recently started a new
and exciting chapter in her life as a dream of
hers has begun to unfold. “Sparrow 5” is an
art store and art studio located right across the
way in Old Town Roseville that she proudly
owns and runs. According to her supportive,
humorous, husband, they spend “25 hours a
day, 8 days a week” working in or on the store.
Marsha has been an artist for years,
probably her whole life. She grew up in
9
a home where her
artistic abilities were
encouraged, and
genetics were also
on her side. She
was inspired by her
great-grandfather
whose paintings were
museum-worthy. As
a young adult,
she began a
mentor-mentee
relationship
with an artist
who taught and
encouraged her
over the next
fifteen years.
Marsha is
not your typical
Marsha and Don Taylor
studio artist.
She does love composition, color theory and
drawing. But she also loves photography,
mannequin heads and cemetery art. More
recently, she has become a champion of fiber
arts, studying doll making and quilting.
It is likely because of her wide and
varied interests that her store, Sparrow 5, is

CoRR Foundation
Presents Race for
Recovery Gala
The newly launched Community Recovery
Resources Foundation is presenting its Race
for Recovery Gala, the region’s only event
focused on raising awareness and resources
to address teen substance abuse. This annual
winter gala event is a fundraiser for CoRR’s
adolescent services throughout Placer and
Nevada counties.
Guests will enjoy a dinner at the Morgan
Creek Golf Club in Roseville on February
7, 2015, with special musical guests, and
impressive race-fan décor. The program will
include personal stories of young people
recovering from addiction to alcohol and
other drugs as well as honored guests who
have supported the variety of services we
offer at CoRR.
This year is particularly special for
those familiar with the story of Full Circle, a
grassroots nonprofit founded by a family and
their friends in response to their son’s substance
abuse and subsequent consequences. Christy
Crandell wrote Lost and Found: A Mother and
Son Find Victory over Teen Drug Addiction.
Her son, Ryan, will receive a special recognition
for what he has overcome and how his struggle
ultimately gave hope to hundreds of teens and
their families.

Fairytale Survivor
Comes To Roseville!
The Roseville Theatre Arts Academy
(RTAA) is proud to present Fairytale Survivor as
part of their continuing Treehouse Players Series.
Tickets are $8 at brownpapertickets.com or $10
at the door.
Over the course of the next sixty grueling
minutes, you will watch as six fairytale characters
that have never met, are thrown together and
face hardships they have never imagined. All the
comforts of their fairytale lives have been stripped
away; they will find no castles here, no helpful
talking mice, or flying fairies. These enchanted
characters will have to use their brains, muscles,
and if they are lucky - some magic to make it to the
end of this game. They will have to rely on their
survival skills for food, shelter, water, and fire.
They will have to work as a team to make it to the
next level, or to risk fate and go it alone. We will
see who will become the next...well, the first and
most likely, unless we can really get good ratings,
the only, Fairytale Survivor. Our six contestants
will be competing not only for the title of Fairytale
Survivor, but for the coveted Goose’s last golden
egg worth possibly tens of dollars.
Fairytale Survivor now through February 7th,
2015 with performances on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
and 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door or $8
through brownpapertickets.com. The Roseville
Theatre Arts Academy is located at 241 Vernon
St, Roseville in the historic Roseville Theatre.
The Roseville Theatre Arts Academy is a
not-for-profit organization dedicated to fostering
theatre arts within the Roseville community.
Programs include children’s workshops each
season, a “Masters’ Series” for more experienced
actors, a Community Choir, and Academy classes in
voice, dance and drama. For more info or to donate
please visit www.rosevilletheatreartsacademy.com
