The mayor also proclaimed February as Visit Our Schools Month in our great city! I will be conducting tours every Tuesday morning in February at 9:30 am and at 6:00 pm on the 24th. Please help us get the word out by sharing this news with your friends. No doubt many of our own families would like to see what goes on during a typical school day and ask questions as we make our way around campus. All are welcome! We have been putting out information regarding the new Alaska Measures of Progress assessments that are replacing the SBA’s. The new test is computer based and is administered to students in grades 3 through 8. We recently sent home a packet with more specifics and directions for downloading KITE. It is our sincere hope that you will partner with us and provide added support in preparing your child for this new assessment. This Thursday is AMP It Up Day district-wide. We will be going live in an effort to test our system, bandwidth, and review logistical issues in advance of the actual administration of the tests beginning March 30th. Students will be taking practice tests during this prescribed time. Parent/Teacher Conferences are once again on the horizon. They take place Wednesday, Feb. 18th from 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, the 19th from 12:00 – 7:00 p.m. Students will be released at 11:45 am each day. There are no clubs taking place on either day, so please be sure to make the necessary arrangements. Directions for the online conference scheduler are included in this newsletter. I would like to express some safety concerns regarding our drive through lanes during drop off and pick up times. Exiting a vehicle from the driver’s side and talking on the cell phone should be avoided at all times. Please do your best to ensure that your child is prepared to readily exit your vehicle. Our school/ business partnership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Anchorage is a successful one. We have placed a drop off receptacle in our lobby for your convenience. Your clothing donations to their organization earns us reams of copier paper. Please consider donating soon! Respectfully yours, Dean K. If your child will be absent from school for any of the following reasons: • Illness • Appointments of any kind: medical/dental/vision/other • Vacations • Other - listed in Attendance Policy Information Please notify us before 10:15 a.m. each day or in advance. Our Zangle system allows us to input upcoming absences, vacations, appointments, etc. You may email us 24/7 or call and leave a message after hours. You can notify us two ways: • Email: [email protected] • Subject line: STUDENT ABSENCE • Please CC: your child’s teacher: t e a c h e r l a s t n a m e _ fi r s t [email protected] • Phone: 742-7455 CLUB INFORMATION Parent/Teacher Conference days There will be NO a8er school clubs on February 18th & 19th. Students will be released at 11:45 a.m. on both days. Please make arrangements for your child(ren)’s a8er school care. • We have many families who have not paid for 3rd Quarter clubs. We would appreciate the fees being paid as soon as possible. Families who have not paid 3rd Quarter fees in full, will not be able to register for 4th Quarter Clubs. • This year 4th Quarter club registration will be a little different from prior years. Please note the following changes in registration. • Registration will be held approximately 2 weeks before the start of 4th quarter and prior to Spring Break. We will know the exact date by the middle of February. Because it is nearly impossible to collect club fees AFTER school is out for summer break, all club fees will need to be paid earlier. Clubs should be paid in full as soon as your placement in a club has been confirmed at registration. We will again hand out a small sheet that lists the club(s) for which you registered your child (ren) to help you pay accurately in Zangle. ALL CLUBS WILL NEED TO BE PAID IN FULL BY APRIL 30th. Any outstanding balances at the end of the year will negatively impact your ability to register for clubs in the fall. Have you entered your volunteer hours? • If you have not already done so, please enter your volunteer hours in the front check in computer. All kindergarten students have been entered and kindergarten families may enter their hours. How do I contact? RSV or the APC? PAGE 4 ASD LOTTERY PROCESS The Anchorage School District implemented an online lottery system for all schools that conduct lottery for entrance. If your student has a younger sibling, you MUST enter the incoming sibling for the lottery online. The incoming sibling will then receive a sibling preference marking on his/her application. Lotteries are held two times each year: during the last two weeks of March and the week prior to registration (July). It is very important to enter your new to district incoming student in the March lottery. The July lottery students will be placed below the March lottery wait listed students. If you have an incoming kindergarten student for the 15/16 school year, you can go online now and enter your incoming kindergarten child in for the lottery. If you have a current ASD student, you will be required to use your Zangle - PARENT CONNECT log on. Parent Connect is located here: https:// parentconnect.asdk12.org/ You can access the lottery application from Zangle as there is an Online Lottery link at the top of the page once you log on. It is very important to have siblings linked - this ensures that your incoming kindergarten student will receive the sibling preference. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ENTER YOUR RETURNING RILKE STUDENTS IN THE LOTTERY - only new to Rilke students for fall of 15/16. For more information on the lottery process: http://www.asdk12.org/choices/lottery/ The Seminar School A School within a School at Service High School The Seminar School is an op0on for 9-‐12th graders at Service High School. PAGE5 Rilke Schule Expresses Gratitude to Guest Teacher Tanja Schaupp Frau Schaupp is from the town of Hammelburg, the oldest Franken town. It is considered a wine city and is located near Würzburg. Frau Schaupp is a student at the Universität Würzburg. Her focus is upon three main subjects; English, geography, and ethics. She is currently about half way through her program and hopes to teach grades 5 and 6 or 9th through 12th in a university preparation school referred to as a Gymnasium. Her 1st and 2nd grade teacher had a profound influence on her. She was very inspirational and used to make use of Harry Potter books and stickers to motivate children. Frau Schaupp remembers loving school so much that she often “played school” with her friends apart from the school day. As part of her university program, she has completed several required internships. There is a typical orientation internship and others that last from five weeks to an entire semester. These are highly structured and don’t naturally offer the intern the chance to interact with students in a relaxed environment. This is one of the reasons why she applied through the Amity program to come work with us here at Rilke Schule. She has worked with students at every grade level and reports to being surprised at how much she enjoyed working with the youngest of our students. She has been very impressed by their inquisitive nature and how affectionate they can be. Frau Schaupp resides with one of our “veteran host families”; Steve and Stacey Schaffer and their three children. She particularly enjoyed the holiday season and all that a large family gathering atmosphere has to offer. With the Schaffer’s, she took a train trip to Seward and got to experience a bit of the wild outdoors by going kayaking. She also attended performances of Les Miserables and The Nutcracker down at the Performing Arts Center. With the other guest teachers, she visited Denali Park, Chena Hot Springs and Fairbanks (where she rode a dog sled for the first time), Girdwood, Cooper Landing, Seward, and Homer. Time often seems to fly by for our visiting teachers and many times, these trips turn into whirlwind tours. Take a moment to express your gratitude to Frau Schaupp. The impact our guest teachers have in our program is profound. Maybe you will consider hosting and, in doing so, welcome a new friend into you family.
