to Truth or Consequences in
1967, and made it his home.
He owned and operated The
Town Talk Café for many
years. He loved cooking
for people and passed that
talent down to his children.
When he retired from the
café, he opened Walk About
Furniture & Antique Store
on Broadway. If there was an
auction in town, you would
be sure to see him there. In
his early years, he did a lot of
rabbit and deer hunting. No
one can deny he loved to go
fishing. He had many friends
and would go to the VFW in
Williamsburg.
His wish was to be cremated
and be buried with his mother
in Fair Acres Hillcrest
Cemetery.
Family gathering will be
held at a later date.

HERALD Editor
Chances are, if you lived
in Sierra County during the
time Kelly Cauffman lived
here, you knew him – or at
least knew of him. You either
debated with the guy, read his
news articles at first in the
Sierra County Sentinel and
then eventually his human
interest features and event
coverage in The Herald and
the newspaper’s monthly
tourism publication –the
Chaparral Guide– or shared
a hearty laugh with Kelly.
He made us laugh deeply
much too often, made us
mildly angry at times, and
informed us through a series
of articles that appeared in
both newspapers, reporting
on governmental happenings
and penning human interest
features. He often caused us
to reflect on our own ways of
thinking and looking at the
world – often challenging us.
Kelly was not the type of
guy to keep his opinion to
himself, but he certainly had
a way of expressing himself
without holding any punches,
but I am certain he deflected
the full force of his verbal
punches out of respect for
the person to whom he was
speaking. Kelly had a knack
for making you genuinely
laugh moments after pushing
the envelope of offending
your personal perspective.
Many of us were looking
forward to the day Kelly
would return to Sierra
County, after leaving the area
for a “short stint” to southern
Nevada.
On the last day of the first
month of the year, Saturday,
Jan. 31, Kelly succumbed to
years of health issues that
affected that giant heart of his
many of us got to know and
love. Kelly was hospitalized
on Thursday, Jan. 29, and
admitted into the Intensive
Care Unit in a Las Vegas,
Nev., hospital. Two days
after arriving at the hospital,
however, Kelly left us for the
last time.
Kelly’s years in Sierra
County were spent living as
a camp host at Elephant Butte
Lake State Park assisting
visitors to New Mexico’s
largest lake, as a volunteer
firefighter while living in
Cuchillo, where he spent
considerable time making
a home. Kelly attended
countless events, often in
costume, a time or two
dressed in drag as a woman,
embodying the spirit of the
Truth or Consequences Fiesta
over the years, taking photos
of athletes competing at the
Elephant Man Triathlon,
and dressed as Santa during
the Floating Lights Parade
and Harvest Festival and
Luminaria Beach Walk. His
boisterous laughter was like
a beacon at places like the
Hillsboro Apple Festival,
Hatch Chile Festival, Elephant
Butte Balloon Regatta, art
hops, and events in Winston
and Truth or Consequences –
camera in hand, taking notes.
He interviewed countless
officials
and
everyday
residents of southern New
Mexico. He made a lot of
lasting friendships in his
relatively short time here.
An obituary for Kelly is
reportedly in the works and
was not available as of The
Herald’s press deadline.
A local memorial has been
organized to honor the life
of Kelly Cauffman, and will
take place at Grapes Gallery
on Main Street Sunday, Feb.
8, 1-3 p.m., thanks to the
