South East U3A Forum Summer School
at the University of Chichester
Monday June 22nd – Thursday June 25th 2015
Courses
The Roman Era in SE Britain
Tutor: Arthur Browne
The course will outline the history of South East Britain during the occupation and the
periods before and after this. It will cover the life of the people, their trade, technology and
agriculture. There will be half day visits to Fishbourne Palace and Bignor Villa, with
conducted tours. This will involve some walking but the ground is easy. It is suitable for all
and no prior knowledge is necessary. There will be a supplement of about £15 for entry
and the tours.
12th Century Abbeys in the British Isles
Tutor: Jean Davidson
In the century following the Norman conquest of Britain newly formed austere monastic
orders were invited from France to help consolidate the invader’s power base and
hundreds of new monasteries were quickly established. Building on recent research
providing medieval document translations and evidence from archaeological excavations,
new claims promote the idea that the 12 th century heralded an industrial revolution as
these monks pioneered technological advances.
This course will evaluate the resources available at the time to these monastic orders from
a sample of over a hundred abbey sites in the British Isles where evidence survives in the
landscape today. This should help identify the geographical extent of economic prosperity
in a new technological age. Participants on the course should have access to the internet
and email.
Some West Sussex Bird Reserves and their Secrets.
Leader: Rosemary Marshall
On this course you will visit two RSPB reserves near Chichester (Pagham Harbour and
Pulborough Brooks) which as well as birds have a wealth of natural habitats supporting a
wide range of flora and fauna. With the aid of a guide members will discover all the
wonderful secrets they have to offer. On the last morning there will be a walk down the
Chichester canal, another very attractive wild life area near the city. Participants should be
regular walkers able to cope with 3-4 miles a day. There will be no hills, but conditions may
be wet and muddy and some paths are tidal. Walking boots and waterproof clothing are
advised. There will be an additional cost to cover entrance fees guides to be advised.
Perspectives in Psychology
Tutor: Anne Dale
Since its emergence as a separate discipline psychology has developed a number of
different perspectives, each emphasising particular aspects of how we function. At times
one approach has been dominant, at others some have been in conflict with each other.
We’ll look at a range of perspectives, identify some of the major figures involved and
examine some of the classic studies which have made significant contributions to our
greater understanding.
Pattern and Power in Mathematics
Tutor: Roger Luther
In this course we will look at a range of mathematical ideas from those of the ancient
Greeks to modern applications such as the Sat Nav device on your car. All will be
explained. No previous knowledge is required. Please bring pen and paper ready to
investigate a wide range of new theories.
Understanding Everyday Life: a sociological approach
Tutor: Bernard Smale
Human Life is full of wonder and experience helps us to learn how to survive. We become
human by interacting with others, so it is exciting to look below the surface of everything
we take for granted. We will study why not eat horse, cow or pig; How we greet strangers.
Why create ceremonies for birth, marriage and death? Are fairy tales for children
interesting ideas to be explored?
Knitting: exploring its history, geography, culture and practice.
Tutor: Penny Ryan
This course will mix an academic study of the origins and development of knitting, its
geographical variations and its role today, with some ‘hands on’ knitting. The academic
side will be delivered through illustrated talks, film clips and discussion of theory. The
practical work will be geared to the level of the participant’s experience. This may be first
steps for beginners, lace and colour work for those with experience or advanced
techniques such as double knitting or entrelac for the most experienced
Roots of Rock and Popular Music
Tutor: Mike Head
From the backwoods of the Appalachians to the Beatles, from the early Mississippi blues
to the Rolling Stones. This is the story of the rise of blues, country music and jazz – and
the musicians who made it happen. How music was changed forever, and
helped to define the 20th century. We will hear key recordings from this important period of
music to get an appreciation of the various musical styles – assisted by illustrations from
Mike on the piano. This course is suitable for anyone fully open to the wider world of music
and aims to be as interactive as possible with plenty of time allocated for informal
discussion and question/answer sessions.
Memory: how experiences are stored in the brain
Tutor: Alison Gaitonde
Forgetfulness is common, but does it matter? Memory is affected by mood, perception,
ageing and the expectations of self and of society. We will consider memory processes,
how short term and long term memories are formed and stored in the brain. Presentations,
discussion and memory games will highlight processes and explore individual differences.
We will think about problems that may arise, prevention, brain plasticity and the relevance
of brain training, tips for managing common difficulties and as much recent research as I
can find.
Play Reading with discussion
Tutor: Gilly Moysey
There will be a choice of several plays, both old and new, including Shaw, Ibsen, Wesker
and Miller. All the texts will be provided and hopefully the subject and ideas in each will
stimulate discussion at the end of each reading. As there will only be time for about four
plays to be read in the three days the study will be relaxed and less intense than last year.
A knowledge of drama is not essential –just an interest in ideas and love of words.
The Impact of war on artists, composers and writers.
Tutor: Margaret Nicolle
Illustrated talks on artists and sculptors will explore the changing depiction of war from
glory and heroism to a more sobering realism. Music from Beethoven to Britten will be
played and discussed. There is a wealth of poetry and novels that participants are invited
to bring examples of literature that have a personal impact on them.
Drawing with pen and enhancing with colour wash
Tutor :Janet Blight
In this course you will explore various techniques in pen drawing and how work can be
enhanced with the introduction of colour. This course will appeal to students with some
drawing experience.
“All the world’s a stage”
Tutor: Beryl Fleming
A creative writing workshop with a difference. Creative writing (including prose and
dramatic form) combined with inventing characters and scenarios – individuals, groups
and together. Active exercises in movement, stage technique and voice production. The
aim is to create separate and ensemble pieces in an entertaining atmosphere for our
mutual enjoyment. Experience preferred but enthusiastic and active beginners welcome.
