It has been literally everywhere, and remains so, since it was first released in cinemas in November 2013. The highest grossing animated film of all time, the fifth highest of any type of film ever made, two Oscars, a hit selling record, cute dolls, pretty dresses for dressing-up games, and the main theme at millions of children’s birthday parties the world over. As 2014 progressed and the film was released on DVD so-called “Frozen fever” took hold, such that the industry surrounding the movie is estimated by Disney to be worth nearly 2 billion dollars, and rising. I can see why. It’s magical. “Do you want to build a snowman?” “Let it go, let it go!” “Hi, I’m Olaf and I like warm hugs.” What’s not to like? It's a story to melt cold hearts. Daughters, nieces, and granddaughters love it. Most parents can quote it and readily sing along whilst making dinner in the kitchen as the DVD gets watched for the 47th time in the sitting room. Even boys like it, but they won't admit it. like ABBA, or Take That, or Strictly Come Dancing, or jelly and ice cream. You try your hardest not to like it, but when no one is looking, you can’t help it. I think it probably has something to do with the heart and heartstrings. Most people can’t go too long without allowing them to be pulled, particularly at this cold and dark time of the year, when the world seems full of terrible news stories. The warm fuzziness of Christmas froze over very quickly this New Year with the horrifying events in Paris. The heart is the main subject matter in Frozen, for it is stories of the heart that chime most deeply within human beings. In fact, perhaps it’s the pounding heart of life and love that is most fundamental to human existence. A Christian worldview would subscribe wholeheartedly to that. For the Bible says God is love, he loves his world, and human beings are made in his image. The story of Frozen encapsulates the heart of the human problem, which is the problem of the human heart. First, it’s a story about a heart’s love misused. Elsa has this wonderful ability to create snow and ice, celebrated and enjoyed when she is younger, but rather than learning to control her powers and her heart, they control her, and so she retreats to a place Apologies, if you have not seen it. But you really should. As I where she can be herself, where she can “let it go,” but sadly write the first dusting of winter snow lies on the Rectory lawn, she is left defensive and deeply alone. Many will identify with so maybe it would do you some good to acquaint yourself with her frustration of possessing great gifts but, through the the enchanting, heart-warming tale of Queen Elsa, Princess failings of her character, lacking the ability to use them Anna, Kristoff, Sven and Olaf. Frozen is set in a mythical northern paradise on Secondly, it’s a story about true love. It’s immediately assumed the shores of a Norwegian fjord. Princess Elsa is heir to the in Frozen that the act of true love to melt a frozen heart must throne of Arendelle, but has the unwelcome ability to turn be a kiss. But, as Olaf the snowman explains, true love is not Princess Anna she accidentally causes her a wound to the superficial but sacrificial (told you it was bit cheesy!). But head. A wound to the heart however would, we are told, be Amen! to that. True love is not about infatuation or connection fatal. Cue the most quotable quote for Christian preachers, or butterflies in the stomach. True love is when someone is “The heart is not so easily changed, but the head can be prepared to lay down their desires, ultimately their life even, persuaded,” says the Troll King. Wise words. As a result of the for another. That is exactly what happens in the film, and the accident, their parents separate the sisters. The music and animation of this scene are astounding. frosty heart-problems of the world is love, self-sacrificial love. Meanwhile, Anna teams up with Kristoff (the love interest), As we shiver through winter 2015, and as we approach Sven (reindeer and unsung hero), and Olaf (annoyingly Valentine’s Day, Lent and Easter, don't let the cold bother you. loveable snowman) and off they go to find Queen Elsa, melt You could do a lot worse than watch Frozen, enjoy it’s her cold heart, unfreeze Arendelle, and live happily ever after. saccharine wit and charm, but perhaps allow it work a little Guess what? That, after all, of the Southern Isle. In the end, we learn that “only an act of was precisely why Jesus laid down his life in true sacrificial love true love can thaw a frozen heart.” Okay, it's not Top Gun or for us. Where Eagles Dare, but I love it! The unavoidable success of Frozen has really struck me in recent months. Just how is it that a rather unoriginal, totally sugary, and at some points very cheesy musical has so captured the hearts of people all over the world? Jean Boardman NORTH TAWTON ENVIRONMENTAL TRUST As many people will be aware, North Tawton Environmental Trust, which is a registered charity, has leased the old South West Water depot in Devonshire Gardens for many years. On this site we have operated the Community Composting Scheme and have also erected two polytunnels which are used by members for growing fruit and vegetables. There are also some growing spaces outside for those who need them and the rest of the site has been managed for the benefit of wildlife. The site is regularly used and is well supported by young families and older more experienced gardeners. Peninsula Properties, who are part of South West Water have decided they wish to develop this site as a small housing estate, and with this in mind are terminating our lease and have applied to West Devon Borough Council for the site to be reallocated for housing. Trust members and many of the local residents do not support this and have made their views known to the Council. The Environmental Trust therefore applied to have the site listed as an Asset of Community Value. This is not an easy process to follow but we have succeeded and West Devon Borough Council has approved our application. This means that should Peninsula Properties wish to sell the site they have to give the Environmental Trust the opportunity to buy it and give us six months to raise the funds to do so. Whilst we still have along way to go, this is good news and we would like to thank everybody who supported our application . WI News January 7th 2015 There was a definite chill in the air during our meeting this afternoon – all due to our January speaker, Pam Kemp, who had come to talk to us about Antarctica. Pam worked for small expedition cruise ships for 30 years and was responsible for taking passengers out in the inflatable boats or zodiacs to go ashore onto the highest, driest and windiest continent in the world. Pam started her talk by describing the route you would take – from Buenos Aires to Ushuaia, then through the Magellan Straits and across Drakes Passage, and then onto the Antarctic Peninsula. Pam's talk was accompanied by some magical photographs that truly captured the raw beauty of this incredible holiday destination and, for me, the best pictures were of the wild life you can encounter there. Pam's tour included a trip to Elephant Island, the desolate refuge where Shackleton left his men for nearly five months whilst he sailed to South Georgia in an open lifeboat to get help – and a trip to Deception Island where you will find black sand and see steam rising from the water due to it's volcanic nature. Luckily for us Pam's selection of slides included plenty of shots of penguins – from the Adelie to the Emperor – the Gentu to the Chinstrap – and the award for the most endearing 'hairstyle' goes to the Macaroni penguin. It is worth 'Googling' varieties of penguins just to have a look! Apart from these very endearing birds, Pam told us about her encounters with other wildlife including several varieties of seal, [watch out for the leopard seal – not too friendly] minky and humpback whales and the incredible wandering albatross with it's up to 12 foot wingspan. Pam's deep love of Antarctica was clearly demonstrated both in words and pictures and she left us all with a much better understanding of this remarkable place. There is nothing better than a nice cup of tea to warm you through when you've just returned from a trip to Antarctica – and the piece of Christmas cake that accompanied it was just as welcome [and you thought that we'd all started our New Year diets!!] Then it was on to the business bit – and just to confirm that the New Year diet has not started, [of course I can't speak for husband – he's still gazing longingly at the chocolate orange and wants to know if it counts as one of your five a day] the first topic of discussion was our Birthday Lunch in February. Once again we are heading off to Exeter College in anticipation of lovely food and very good service – and today we had the onerous task of choosing from the tasty looking menu – not a salad in sight! As part of the National Federation of WI's 2015 Centenary celebration we are looking at how we can mark this milestone and suggestions so far include planting a tree and 'planting' a WI time capsule. Husband has just raised his eyebrows which normally means that there is a cynical comment on the way – and sure enough he's ROUNDABOUT suggested that we put in a jar of my home made blackcurrant jam that I [accidentally] boiled for too long and now it resembles something you could mend a pothole with, and a copy of my 'WI ramblings' as whoever dug it up in 100 years could probably do with a good laugh. Moving swiftly on – a cycle ride on the Tarka trail in the spring could be just the thing to blow away the winter cobwebs, and there is talk of another trip to the cinema for a private viewing of the 2nd Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. All the regular lunch, supper, book and craft clubs have resumed following the festive break and, for the sporty ones among us, skittles and scrabble matches are off the mark [yes I know dear husband – scrabble may not look like a sport but you need to be able to spell 'bo-taoshi' correctly – that's another Google search!] And finally – glancing through the 2015 programme – it looks like we are due to have some really interesting talks on topics such as 'Jane Austen' and 'Hope Bourne's Exmoor' and there is an interestingly titled talk called 'Have Wig, Will Travel' - [your guess is as good as mine] so a huge congratulations to Monica for putting together our new programme [not an easy job] I think that's probably quite enough of my 'WI ramblings' – see you next month. Next meeting – February 4th – speaker Noel Walters – 'Work of a Hospital Chaplain' Sue Knott ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Our annual dinner this year was held at the Lymington Arms, Wembworthy on Friday, 28th November... with forty-one attending. Judging by the comments it was a great night, with vice-chairman Paddy, together with Brian our treasurer, taking over in my absence as Ann and I could not attend due to my operation. Neil, our poppy coordinator and president, presented Monica Simons with the Legion’s medal and certificate in recognition of fifty years of poppy collecting, very much deserved. Some years ago Monica's mum was presented with the same for her fifty years collecting - what an achievement. The evening also raised £47.00. (with the auction of the cuddly toy) going to the Exeter Leukaemia Fund. The evening concluded with our ever popular draw raising a total of £99.00.going to the poppy fund. The poppy appeal was well supported again this year raising a sum of just over £2500.00. The next event sometime in April will be our Auction and Draw - further details to follow. I would sincerely like to thank you all for the get well cards and telephone calls I received after my operation and I’m now hopefully on the road to recovery. Progress has been made regarding a number of the issues that have been on the agenda in recent months. The committee set up to focus on proceeding with the extension of the war memorial in Sampford Courtenay held its first meeting. It was agreed that architect Jeremy Chadburn, a specialist in such projects, should be engaged to take the work already undertaken by Councillor Coleman through its final stages, in cooperation with WDBC planning and conservation officers, as well as church authorities. Applications for funding towards the work have been made to Devon Remembers and the War Memorials Trust. Chairman Councillor Robert Wilson made a successful application for funding from the Town and Parish (TAP) Fund, receiving the sum of £500 to spend on a dishwasher for the new kitchen at the village hall. In recent years, SCPC has reduced its precept (i.e., the component of Council Tax that is levied by the local parish council). For the coming financial year, however, SCPC voted to maintain the precept at its existing level to enable it to fund the updating of the war memorial (over and above the above-mentioned sums from external organisations). SCPC also hopes to be able to offer some financial assistance towards the building work currently being undertaken on the village hall – which is, it was felt, an extremely valuable local amenity. It is currently in negotiations with Chase Milton Energy regarding possible funding from their grant scheme related to the erection of the wind turbine near Bondleigh, which aims to support local projects with good ‘environmental credentials’. SAMPFORD COURTENAY OPEN GARDENS Sunday 28 June 2015 This is joint event with the village hall and the church. It has been noted that the beech hedge along the lower margin of the village green and some lower limbs of nearby trees need trimming. Councillor Morris met with Mrs. Bevis (who regularly checks the green for SCPC) and contractor Mr. Kingdom; remedial works are scheduled for January. It’s not easy to miss the fact that we have a general election coming up in May, with the many political agendas being presented to us by politicians of all persuasions throughout the media. In fact, election day will also bring the opportunity to vote at parish council level. SCPC would like to encourage anyone who is interested in becoming a parish councillor to do so. It offers a great way to become involved with local issues and to try to ‘do one’s bit’ in terms of enhancing the environment in which we all live. You would be most welcome (as is, indeed, the case at every meeting) if you would like to attend a meeting or two to see the sort of topics that arise on the agenda. If you would like to put yourself forward for election to SCPC (deadline currently Thursday, 9 April), full details of how to apply are available from Mrs Marion Pratt, Clerk to the Council, at [email protected] or on 01837 82285. ROUNDABOUT Page 14 FONTS (FRIENDS OF NORTH TAWTON SCHOOL) We are having a busy fundraising year again, our main focus being a new heater for the school swimming pool. The children of North Tawton are very lucky to have a pool, not a luxury available to many rural schools. So there are no wasted days travelling to and from Okehampton. It is also open during the summer holidays so there is cheap, safe and fun entertainment for them. In the last 3 years FONTS have raised enough money for the pool liner and pump to be replaced. It is also our responsibility to maintain the chemicals in the water and replace floats and toys for the children to use. This year our aim is to update the heating system with a Heat Exchanger Pump that uses warmth from the air. This will be a far more economical system and should save the school a considerable amount of money while the pool is in use. The White Hart Pub has kindly agreed to host a quiz on Saturday 7th March at 7.30pm. Teams to consist of 4 or 5 with an entry fee of £5.00 per team, with a prize of £50.00 for the winners! There will also be a draw. Please come along to help raise some money for the school, while having a fun evening in your friendly local! OKEHAMPTON LIBRARY February sees the launch of our new Lego Builders club at Okehampton Library. On the first Saturday of every month from 10:30-11:30 come along with your child and get creative, let their imagination run wild. Masterpieces will then be displayed in the library and photos put onto our Facebook pages. The first meeting is on the 7th February which is National Libraries Day, so the perfect way to celebrate. Whilst at the library that morning enjoy free refreshments, and become more connected with our digital services by providing us with your email address to receive reminders about items that are due for renewal and keep up to date on plans for the library service along with events and activities via a newsletter. Your details are not passed on to other organisations. We will have a member of staff on hand to assist with our online services. These include ebooks and audio books, accessing your borrower record, searching and reserving from our online catalogue, and using Ancestry, one of a range of online reference sources to which the library subscribes. For further details contact Thanks for your continued support Jo Reynolds FONTS Okehampton Library 01837 52805 Castle Drogo – Inside Out Hello everyone Things are really starting to move up at the castle now as we continue to prepare for the start of the new season in March. Protection work has now been removed from the Drawing Room and we are finishing off work to the Dining Room windows so that the protection work in there can come out too. Our conservation team will them start moving collection out of the north end of the building in to those spaces so the builders can start putting the protection work up in the rooms along the Green Corridor. It’s like one of those puzzles where you have to move all the pieces around but only have one empty square. There are a few fun things coming up too. On Saturday 21 February, we will be hosting a coffee morning at Endacott House in Chagford. Everyone is welcome so please pop in to see me and some of our brilliant volunteers. Also, on Tuesday 24 February, we will be holding our second inter-schools cross country run. Last year, we had over 130 children take part and it really was a lot of fun. Fingers crossed for nice weather please! Finally, on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 February, 11am – 3pm, we will have a volunteering open day. Please pop in for an informal chat about volunteering or just to find out more about the project. Best wishes everyone and I hope to see you soon, Paula Community Engagement Officer, Castle Drogo 01647 434130, [email protected] ROUNDABOUT Page 15 Cath Pettyfer T: 01837 89024 E: [email protected] The snowdrops are here! When the first snowdrops start to appear you know winter is finally coming to an end. So what better way to celebrate the change in seasons than by visiting one of many National Gardens Schemes gardens that will be open over the coming months. From sprawling woods to romantic cottage gardens, it’s the perfect way to gain inspiration for your own garden or to simply while away an afternoon. Cherubeer Gardens 2 miles east of Dolton, Devon, EX19 8PP are open on Sunday 1 st and Friday 20th February from 2pm to 5pm with shady woodland beds containing carpets of over two hundred varieties of snowdrops. The gardens also have many spring flowering flowers and shrubs, a National collection of Hardy Cyclamen and many single and double forms of Hellebore. Whether you are a keen galanthophile (an enthusiastic collector of snowdrops – Galathanus species and cultivars) or would just like to wander in a pretty winter garden, the Cherubeers will have plenty to interest you. Plus there are delicious home-made teas at Higher Cherubeer and snowdrop plants for sale. Combined admission to the two gardens is £4 and children are free. The National Gardens Scheme (NGS) raises millions of pounds for charity each year, as visitors pay a very reasonable fee to enjoy a visit to private gardens up and down the country. Hundreds of garden owners spend many hours preparing their gardens for the special visiting days, and all in a very good cause. Help the Hospices and Macmillan Cancer Support are just two of the charities that have received millions of pounds from the NGS, helping them to carry out their vital work. To see all the gardens opening this year just visit www.ngs.org.uk. Sampford Courtenay Village Hall Management Committee The building work is progressing well. We have now received £6250 in donations from residents and altogether we have secured around £60,000 towards the project. A fresh analysis of costs now puts the total of the project at £80,000. We had a good number of quiz teams turn up to the Quiz and Puddings on 14th November. The puddings proved to be a very welcome break between the questions! We are having another Quiz and Puddings evening on May 15 th. On the 28th November we held the Beetle Drive. We didn’t have a huge number of people, but those that were there had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. It was great fun!! We wish to thank Shirley McClement, who organised it. It is hoped to hold another one. The Coffee Morning was held on December 13th. An eager crowd enjoyed refreshments and saw the draw take place. The winner of the £100 was Mrs. Smith from Okehampton. We held our Christmas Bingo on 17th December – a good turn out. People went home happy with their winnings! Jerri and Chloe Hart are returning to the hall on 21st February 2015! An evening of Song and Laughter! (see separate item). Another date for your diary – the very talented husband and wife folk duo Sean Lakeman and Kathryn Roberts are coming to the hall in March (see below) with help from Villages In Action. In response to Martin Olsson’s article in the December/January edition we have received the following two contributions: It was good to read a passionate view on the proposed field of solar panels. However I felt a few things were missing or overlooked or missed the point. Renewable energy is vital but not at the cost of valuable farm land. Yes, we import too much food from other countries and farmers are encouraged to intensify their farming methods and animal husbandry which does not help the environment or support animal welfare. So the loss of another field and more in Devon is a negative way forward. We must protect our landscape, what is left of it, and support our environment as much as possible. We should value our farming heritage. Developers love green field sites as they are less work, thus more profit. Look around North Tawton, it’s a farming area, a priceless asset to the life on this small planet and to us in the UK. There are vast areas of brown field sites around the country that can accommodate Solar panels. Google Earth North Tawton and see the roof tops that are just a waste of excellent Solar panel sites. My house is half covered in them, is yours, Mr Olsson? Roof tops are the way forward. How many new roofs are to be built in North Tawton in the coming year? Governments prefer Nuclear Energy. We should not be leaving this pollution to the planet or anybody’s future generations, but we are. Shame on Somerset and their new one. “One modest energy project”, one more, then one more, when will it stop? We import 60% of our food; can we keep accommodating one more lost field? Wind turbines take up little space and for me are no worse to look at than the chimneys, telegraph poles and aerials I see from every window. In fact I like the look of them as I walk and drive about. Our landscape has never been “pickled in aspic” and I expect never will. We should protect the environment that feeds and sustains us and be more imaginative with renewable energies. Protecting a rural asset, a food supply, is not the same as keeping something in aspic. Alan Dilly *************************************************************** I’d like to thank Martin Ollson for being brave enough to contribute his view on the need for us all to face up to the needs of climate change and welcome alternative sources of green energy. As he says, we are facing a bleak future if these needs are not met. The scene was set for a great term, when, in October we had a long-awaited visit from OFSTED. This time, the Inspector was very open, supportive and positive from the outset and made complimentary comments about what he saw in the school data, before he set foot in the school. The Inspection days reaffirmed his prior opinions and he graded the school as Good in all areas, with good and outstanding teaching being observed throughout the school. We feel that the ‘Good’ grading for all areas, accurately reflects the views of the children, parents, staff and governors at the school and are really pleased with the positive comments made by the inspector. As a team, we have worked hard to gain this accolade and I would like to thank everyone for their support. This report clearly demonstrates the high level of commitment from the whole school community towards achieving excellence. In November we had the ‘Best Assembly Ever’ which was a result of great team work between the school and Pre-School. Bridget Kamel, Pre-School Manager was successful in completing a competition entry form, which resulted in us winning a ‘Best Assembly Ever’ box from Children in Need, which arrived on a Pallet, much to the intrigue of the children. This was revealed in a SuperHero assembly and included T shirts, Superhero costumes, badges and assembly ideas. The Super Hero Children in Need day was featured live on BBC Radio Devon and was also included in the Okehampton Times. Activities included; a Teacher Talent Contest, Class Songs, Amazing Children In Need prizes, Beat the Teacher competition, a cake sale, Visiting Heroes – the Fire Brigade, Police and Nurse, plus two young Musicians and a comedy duo. The day climaxed in a Custard Pie Challenge (a sponsored event in which the class that raised the most money was able to “PIE” Mr D’Agorne and Bridget!). The total raised for Children-in Need was an astonishing £1,310. In December, we ended the year with the best Nativity ever! The children re-enacted the story of the first Christmas in modern style, with a combination of Rap and foot-tapping show tunes. This culminated in a touching stable tableaux outside in a fairy-lit shelter, which was made more realistic and moving by the presence of real donkeys and sheep around the manger, reminding all who attended of the special baby born in a barn. Much hard work by the children and helpers made for a beautiful performance enjoyed by all and finished off with mulled wine, hot chocolate and mince pies. Finally, in the last week of term we had a fantastic Carol Singing Service in the Church and sang Carols around the Town, which raised £170 for the Children’s Hospice. I would like to thank everyone in the community who helped make the term the best ever. We are looking forward to the Spring Term, in which we will be holding a variety of events including a Maths Information Event from 2pm to 4.30pm on Tuesday 3rd February, a Reading Information Event On Wednesday 4th March, linked to World Book Day (which is in the same week) and finally we will be raising money for children again on Red Nose Day, which is on Friday 13th March. Nick D’Agorne Headteacher The Delivery of “Roundabout” from its earliest years to the present day. During the incumbency of the Rev’d Tony Gibson in the late 1980’s, he introduced the “Roundabout” to the four parishes in much the same style as it is today. It was edited by the late Edna Eglington of “Lakeway, North Tawton. My late wife, Frances, undertook delivery to Bondleigh and parts of Coldridge and Winkleigh parishes eg. All homes east of the river from Westworthy and Skinnersland through the village to Bondleigh Bridge, also handing on copies to Mrs. Sheila Thorn and Mrs. Tricia Peters to deliver in their areas, which they kindly still do. Frances continued to deliver to all the homes from “Clapper Cottage” to Stabdon Farm and all the homes on that top road to Winkleigh as far as Coulson Farm. Since my late wife’s death in 2001 I have continued to do so until last year when Martin Olsson has kindly taken on the task. The mechanical digger achieving the delicate task of trenching through the churchyard was driven by Danny Semorad and permission for the work to go ahead was conditional upon the process being followed and recorded by the watchful eye of an archaeologist. Great care was taken to avoid known graves, but, of course, it was possible that very old graves without a visible headstone might be uncovered. These photographs (left) are reproduced from the Archaeological Report and show the trenches on the north side of the church (top), on the east side (middle) and on the west side (bottom). The Archaeologist’s full Report is in possession of Danny Semorad, as Church Warden, and contains more photographs, including some of the finds unearthed. Many thanks to all those who contributed, either on the day or by donating items for sale. The programme for a concert entitled ‘Towards Eternity’, held in St Andrew’s on the evening of Saturday, 6th December, unfortunately had to be changed at the last minute owing to the indisposition of oboist Emily Penn. Trumpeter John Courtie stepped in to accompany soprano Emily Owen, with Roger Cleverdon at the organ and piano. A Guildhall School of Music student, Emily is no stranger to the village, having lived here and sung in the Parish church choir from childhood to University days and it was a great joy for the audience to hear how her wonderful voice has matured. Proceeds from the concert were donated to St Andrew’s church. Christmas was celebrated in Sampford Courtenay with a coffee morning and grand Christmas draw in the village hall on Saturday, December 13th. Proceeds were in aid of the village hall refurbishment. A candlelit carol service on December 14th at St. Andrew’s church was followed by Carols at the Inn at the New Inn on December 17th. The Sampford Stompers provided the musical accompaniment for the latter and Malcolm and Karen Whybrow provided mince pies. A cake, made and iced by Barbara Peart, was raffled and the proceeds from the evening were divided between the Children’s Hospice South West and Exeter FORCE. A Christingle service was held at St Andrew’s on Sunday, December 21st, when 40 traditional Christingles, made of oranges decorated with sweets, were presented to families and children in the congregation. A collection was made in aid of the Children’s Society. Carol singing round the village took place on Monday, December 22nd and £128 was raised for the Children’s Hospice South West. The group was grateful for the generosity of the villagers, for the sweets and sausage rolls given out during the evening. and especially for the mulled cider and festive food provided by Martin and Catherine Morrissey. St. Andrew’s church was beautifully decorated for the candlelit midnight communion on Christmas Eve and also for the service on Christmas Day. On New Year’s Eve, The Square was filled with families and friends around the blazing brazier for the traditional ringing out of the old year, with muffled bells, and the ringing in of the New Year with un-muffled bells. Approximately 100 people joined hands to sing Auld Lang Syne. Plough Sunday was celebrated at St. Andrew’s, Sampford Courtenay on Sunday, January 11th, by villagers, the local farming community and members of Okehampton and Winkleigh Young Farmer’s clubs. The service included a blessing of the plough, together with a small sack of wheat and some local soil, taken up the aisle by YFC members, ROUNDABOUT The choir sang ‘Jesus Christ the Apple Tree’ and the service concluded with a procession to The Square, whilst singing ‘We plough the fields and scatter’. Tractors from local farms, which had assembled there, were blessed by the Revd Nick Weldon.
