Parent and Community Support
Germantown Elementary School (GES) partners with a
number of community organizations throughout the school
year to provide enrichment opportunities for students. Past
field trip experiences include visits to various community
attractions, such as the Agricenter, Elmwood Cemetery, and
the National Civil Rights Museum. The Germantown Fire
Department presents fire safety programs each year. Various
area restaurants (including Domino’s Pizza, Memphis Pizza
Café, Noodles of Germantown, Humdinger’s, Mellow
Mushroom, Gracie Bleu Frozen Yogurt, TCBY, and Chili’s)
host GES family nights with a percentage of proceeds donated to the school.
In addition to partnerships with local organizations,
parental involvement is welcomed and is considered essential
to the overall success of the school and its students. The
Parent Teacher Association (PTA) at Germantown provides
the school with both financial and volunteer support. The
PTA’s contributions to the school include providing various
rewards and incentives to encourage students to strive for
excellence.

Excellence in Education
The multicultural composition of the Germantown
Elementary School student body contributes to a rich
learning environment for all children. Germantown
Elementary provides every student with opportunities to
attain or exceed academic goals in all subjects through
problem and project based learning and multicultural and
cross curricular activities. Students are empowered to
develop the intellectual, emotional, physical, and social abilities necessary to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators and productive, responsible citizens.
Instruction is conducted in a calm, well-organized environment that is conducive to productive learning experiences. Teachers incorporate practices designed to make the
classroom more stimulating and challenging. A safe environment is created to ensure optimal learning experiences
for all students.
Advantages of the Program
• Students participate in an in-depth study of a different
country at each grade level to enhance global
awareness. They will spend the year learning about the
geography, culture, government, and economics of five
different countries. Our countries of study are Mexico,
France, Australia, Egypt, and Japan. Students will leave
Germantown Elementary Optional School with a
cumulative knowledge of all these different countries.
• Special emphasis is placed on creative and critical
thinking in all disciplines.
• Enrichment experiences are gained through field trips,
arts programs, and guest speakers.
• Opportunities are provided for children of various
cultural backgrounds to interact with each other to
enhance understanding and appreciation of other
languages and cultures.
• Students are introduced to world language study through
conversational French lessons, which are provided three
times per week to all grades. Other multicultural lessons
and activities are integrated into subject areas such as Art,
Music, and Physical Education.
• Modern, innovative technology is integrated into
instructional activities and lessons to enhance student
learning and prepare students to succeed in a technology-driven
world.
Meeting All Students’ Needs
Germantown Elementary takes pride in meeting the needs
of a diverse student population. We offer an excellent
English as a Second Language (ESL) program to serve our
culturally and ethnically diverse student body.
The CLUE* (Creative Learning in a Unique
Environment) program is provided for qualified, intellectually gifted students in grades 1-5. CLUE meets four hours a
week to focus on thinking and communication skills, group
dynamic activities, independent study, decision-making activities, creative problem-solving, and research skills.
A full-time professional school counselor works with students, teachers, and parents to meet students’ individual
needs. The counselor also conducts classroom activities to
enhance student academics through improved study skills,
time management, and test-taking skills.
Germantown Elementary has two full-time physical education teachers who encourage health and wellness and teach
recreational activities that can be enjoyed throughout a student’s lifetime.
