Houston Ballet Presents: Romeo and Juliet Joseph at Theatre Under the Stars From February 26 - March 8, 2015, Houston Ballet presents the highlight of the 2014-2015 season: the world premiere of a new production of Romeo and Juliet by Stanton Welch. One of Shakespeare’s most famous tales, Stanton Welch’s Romeo and Juliet, will be a fresh, brilliantly imagined interpretation of the classic love story of two star-crossed lovers. The production is set to the exquisite score by Sergei Prokofiev and designed by renowned Italian designer Roberta Guidi di Bagno, who will create the spectacular scenery and costumes for the production. This new production, Houston Ballet’s first in 28 years, is made possible through the generosity of longtime Houston Ballet supporters Ted and Melza Barr. TUTS presents the blockbuster musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, starring Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, March 17-29, 2015. “Romeo and Juliet is a milestone work, a benchmark for a choreographer. I’ve never created a work inspired by Shakespeare’s dramas before. Prokofiev’s score is so exquisitely evocative, with such a strong sense of the individual characters. There are parts of the score that are so moving and emotional that they can bring one to tears,” states Mr. Welch. One of the most enduring shows of all time, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is the irresistible family musical about the trials and triumphs of Joseph, Israel’s favorite son. Retelling the Biblical story of Joseph, his eleven brothers and the coat of many colors, this magical musical is full of unforgettable songs. The production would not be possible without the support of Ted and Melza Barr. The couple has generously underwritten the entire cost of continued on p. 5 For tickets or information, visit the website at www.tuts.com, or call 713-558-2600. Houston/Heights Tribune Distribution Map Books, Picks and Gifts All The Light We Cannot See: A Novel: by Anthony Doerr -- From the highly acclaimed, multiple award-winning Anthony Doerr, comes the beautiful, stunningly ambitious instant New York Times bestseller about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Marie-Laure lives with her father in Paris near the Museum of Natural History, where he works as the master of its thousands of locks. When she is six, MarieLaure goes blind and her father builds a perfect miniature of their neighborhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. When she is twelve, the Nazis occupy Paris and father and daughter flee to the walled citadel of Saint-Malo, where Marie-Laure’s reclusive great-uncle lives in a tall house by the sea. With them they carry what might be the museum’s most valuable and dangerous jewel. In a mining town in Germany, the orphan Werner grows up with his younger sister, enchanted by a crude radio they find. Werner becomes an expert at building and fixing these crucial new instruments, a talent that wins him a place at a brutal academy for Hitler Youth, then a special assignment to track the resistance. More and more aware of the human cost of his intelligence, Werner travels through the heart of the war and, finally, into Saint-Malo, where his story and Marie-Laure’s converge. Mr. Mercedes: A Novel: by Stephen King -- In a mega-stakes, highsuspense race against time, three of the most unlikely and winning heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. In another part of town, months later, a retired cop named Bill Hodges is still haunted by the unsolved crime. When he gets a crazed letter from someone who self-identifies as the “perk” and threatens an even more diabolical attack, Hodges wakes up from his depressed and vacant retirement, hell-bent on preventing another tragedy. Brady Hartsfield lives with his alcoholic mother in the house where he was born. He loved the feel of death under the wheels of the Mercedes, and he wants that rush again. Only Bill Hodges, with a couple of highly unlikely allies, can apprehend the killer before he strikes again. And they have no time to lose, because Brady’s next mission, if it succeeds, will kill or maim thousands. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable. Gray Mountain: A Novel: by John Grisham -- The year is 2008 and Samantha Kofer’s career at a huge Wall Street law firm is on the fast track—until the recession hits and she gets downsized, furloughed, escorted out of the building. Samantha, though, is one of the “lucky” associates. She’s offered an opportunity to work at a legal aid clinic for one year without pay, after which there would be a slim chance that she’d get her old job back. In a matter of days Samantha moves from Manhattan to Brady, Virginia, population 2,200, in the heart of Appalachia, a part of the world she has only read about. Mattie Wyatt, lifelong Brady resident and head of the town’s legal aid clinic, is there to teach her how to “help real people with real problems.” For the first time in her career, Samantha prepares a lawsuit, sees the inside of an actual courtroom, gets scolded by a judge, and receives threats from locals who aren’t so thrilled to have a big-city lawyer in town. And she learns that Brady, like most small towns, harbors some big secrets. Her new job takes Samantha into the murky and dangerous world of coal mining, where laws are often broken, rules are ignored, regulations are flouted, communities are divided, and the land itself is under attack from Big Coal. Violence is always just around the corner, and within weeks Samantha finds herself engulfed in litigation that turns deadly. Inner Loop February 2015 TRIBUNE Page 5 Houston Ballet Presents: Romeo and Juliet continued from p. 1 Welch’s new Romeo and Juliet. The Barrs have been Houston Ballet patrons for over 30 years. Mrs. Barr serves on the executive committee of Houston Ballet’s board and has been known to plan the couple’s travel plans around Houston Ballet touring engagements. “Romeo and Juliet has long been one of our favorite ballets, and we were excited when we learned Stanton was interested in doing a new version of it for Houston Ballet,” comments Melza Barr. “With his amazing and talented choreography, the talented artistry of the Houston dancers, and the beautiful sets and costume designs by Roberta Guidi di Bagno, it thrills us to be able to support such a production.” Mrs. Barr continues, “This new and spectacular production by Stanton Welch of one of the world’s most famous love stories on Shakespeare’s 450th anniversary year will be a wonderful achievement of Houston Ballet.” Set in Verona, Italy, during the Italian Renaissance, Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare about two young star-crossed lovers whose deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. According to literary scholar Harold Bloom in Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human, it is “the most persuasive celebration of romantic love in Western literature.” Believed to have been written between 1591 and 1595, the play is among Shakespeare’s most popular, and, along with Hamlet, is one of his most frequently performed plays. TAKE THE FIRST STEP IN ELIMINATING JOINT PAIN Shakespeare’s tale of the doomed lovers has been an inspiration to choreographers worldwide since the earliest days of ballet. Although records show the first treatment of the ballet was in 1811 by the Royal Danish Ballet, the most notable productions have come in the twentieth century and have utilized Prokofiev’s score for a full-length version. The most influential Romeo and Juliet was staged by the Kirov Ballet with choreography by Leonid Lavrovsky in 1940. Inspired by Lavrovksy’s version, several choreographers tried their hands at Romeo and Juliet; most notably, Yuri Grigorovich, Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Anthony Tudor, John Cranko and Rudolf Nureyev. Explaining the allure of the tale of Romeo and Juliet, critic John Gruen writes in his book, The World’s Great Ballets, “Romeo and Juliet is charged with passion, theatrical spectacle, rollicking humor, and breathtaking solos and dances for small groups and ensembles - all working to convey the grandeur and emotion of Shakespeare’s tragedy.” The new production of Romeo and Juliet is designed by Roberta Guidi di Bagno, who has collaborated with Stanton Welch on two of his productions for Royal Danish Ballet: Ønsket (“The Wish”) (1998) and Ander (“The Ghost”) (1999). “Roberta creates a sort of old-world glamour with her designs,” Mr. Welch comments. “She is from Italy, and I thought it fitting that she would bring her experience and knowledge of the artwork of the country into the production design.” Romeo and Juliet is set to the music of Sergei Prokofiev (1891 - 1953). Born in Russia, Prokofiev was a composer, pianist and conductor who mastered numerous musical genres and is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. The score for Romeo and Juliet was commissioned by the Kirov Ballet and was Prokofiev’s first attempt at composing a full-length ballet. Prokofiev completed the score in 1935 and it was first performed in a concert that year. When the Kirov Ballet finally performed the ballet in 1940, it was to great commercial success and critical acclaim. Since then, it has remained one of the most popular ballets in the world, and one of Prokofiev’s most enduring successes. This production of Romeo and Julietis the third staging of one of the great full-length story ballets that form the core of the ballet repertoire Mr. Welch has created for Houston Ballet. He previously created Swan Lake (2006) and La Bayadère (2010) on the company. He has also choreographed a number of full-length story ballets for The Australian Ballet, including Madame Butterfly (1995), Cinderella (1997), and The Sleeping Beauty (2005); as well as two original evening-length works for Houston Ballet: Tales of Texas (2004) and Marie (2009). Performances will be held at Brown Theater, Wortham Theater Center, 501 Texas Avenue in downtown Houston. Tickets are $19 - $135. For tickets call 713-227-2787 or 1-800-828 ARTS. Entertainment • Dining Celebrate Texas Independence Day All Texans (natural born, and those that got here as soon as they could) are invited to a Texas-sized 179th birthday celebration on the very spot “Where Texas Became Texas”—Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site. It was March 2, 1836 when 59 delegates bravely met at Washington, Texas to make a formal declaration of independence from Mexico. From 1836 until 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly existed as a separate nation. “Texas Independence Day Celebration” is an annual two-day celebration on Saturday, February 28 and Sunday, March 1, 2015 on the expansive 293-acre park grounds of the Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site, between Brenham and Navasota—and less than 1½ hours from Houston. The birthday celebration features live music, food, traditional crafts, living history presentations, firing demonstrations, historical encampments and commemorative programs. Guests will step back into history at this state park to experience life in Texas in 1836 by visiting with reenactors; witnessing firing demonstrations in the Texas Army camps; watching cooking, weaving and period craft demonstrations; and walking the same trail as Texas’ forefathers and pioneer families. Texas musicians will provide musical entertainment, including the Lone Star String Band and the Great American Medicine Show featuring Professor Farquar and his “historic narratives, comic chronicles, tall tales, unabashed balderdash and the greatest songs of the 19th century.” The three attractions on the Washington on the Brazos State Historic Site (WOB)—(Independence Hall, Star of the Republic Museum, and Barrington Living History Farm)— will feature special activities, and all admission and tour fees will be waived during the two-day celebration. Independence Hall, Barrington Living History Farm and the WOB Visitor Center are all administered—along with the parklands—by Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD); the Star of the Republic Museum is administered by Blinn College. Free bus shuttles will run throughout the park on Saturday and Sunday. More detailed information on the weekend’s festivities will be continually updated at the website, www.wheretexasbecametexas.org; the public can also call 936-8782214 or email [email protected] for more information. For lodging information, please contact the Brenham Visitor Center at 1-888-BRENHAM, or the City of Navasota at 936-825-7055. Lone Star College -- Montgomery County Campus will host Marti Corn’s photographic exhibit now through February 13. The closing reception will be held Monday, February 12 at Noon. Don’t Talk to the Actors by Tom Dudzick and directed by Sam Martinez. This look into the drama behind the drama runs now through February 7, 2015. It’s young playwright Jerry Przpezniak’s dream come true when his play heads for Broadway. But Jerry and his fiancé find that manipulation, diva-like behavior, and chaotic abandon are the things theatrical nightmares are made of. Freed from slavery, some of the precious few who were able to buy their own land created the community, Tamina, in 1871. Located along the railroad line between Houston and Conroe, they built their own churches, stores, and schools, tilled the land, raised hogs, and worked in the sawmills. Today, Tamina is one of the few remaining freedmen towns in the United States. Others have fallen to gentrification. This settlement is historically significant because of its African American roots, and because it has survived Jim Crow legislation, the depression, the civil rights movement, and gentrification. Although her story is steeped in history, few paragraphs have ever been published. The Ground On Which I Stand, is an exhibit with portraits made of twelve people, their families, and their community, along with their stories told in their own voice. They represent different aspects of the community— young and old, black cowboys, ministers, those who have created nonprofits to help their neighbors, those whose descendants helped establish Tamina, and those who have made Tamina their home within their lifetime. Their stories tell of a deep-rooted kinship with one another, with their values resting on family and community. Regardless of the challenges faced, their faith, gratitude, and humor always thread their tales. Also being shown in this exhibit are portraits made by children of Tamina’s Community Center, where Marti Corn and Ben DeSoto taught 32 children photographic skills as they explored their heritage. Marti Corn is a documentary portrait photographer. Her projects revolve around human rights issues and oral histories. Her photography and curiosity have taken her to Kibera, Kenya, to make portraits for Amnesty International and Pangea Network, to Tegucigalpa and Roatan, Honduras, to photograph those who struggle to survive the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch for two non-profit clinics; Salzwedel, a small East German town, to make portraits of supporters of the arts for an art house currently being renovated; and to this heart-warming town, Tamina. Visit the website at www.MartiCornPhotography.com for additional information. Health • Sports • Activities February 2015 Inspired by memory drawings, journal sketches, artifacts and family tales told by the Holocaust survivors of her husband’s family, Jakobsberg has created art that leaves sweet, yet haunting memories, making her visions a reality. By incorporating images from photographs and other documents into her etched prints, she develops a story, reminding us of our inability to grasp our past completely. In Birthrights Left Behind, Jakobsberg poses the question: “Is it possible to shape the future through memories of the past?” “Birthrights” is a selection of Jakobsberg’s work consisting of 20 original hand-pulled prints using various printmaking techniques, ranging from engraving, etching, silkscreen and collagraph. Please Inspired by the ancient Scythian treasures unearthed during archaeological digs in Kerch on the north coast of the Black Sea, Peter Carl Fabergé (1846-1920) first won acclaim for his historical pieces during the PanRussian Industrial exhibition of 1882. New to the collection is a lion’s head charm created by one of Fabergé’s first workmasters Erik Kollin. Fabergé went on to create original, exquisite objects of luxury for the elite, as well as impeccably designed everyday objects. You can see hundreds of these items— predominantly made for and use by the royalty— in the McFerrin Collection. From elegantly simple to breathtakingly ornate, the jewelry, clocks, picture frames, snuff boxes, cigarette cases, desk accessories, flower studies and carved hardstone animals in this collection were thoughtfully selected to exemplify extraordinary materials and workmanship. New to the exhibition is a hand-held fan belonging to Queen Victoria. Today, the House of Fabergé is best known for crafting Easter eggs in the late 19th to early 20th centuries. Visitors to the exhibition will be happy to see these stunning pieces are still on exhibition, some complete with their “surprise”—including the stunning Imperial Diamond Trellis Egg, Kelch Egg and Nobel Ice Egg. SPA’s Art Contest offers ALL kindergarten through 12th grade students in the greater Houston area and beyond a chance to showcase their talents and win prizes, while learning more about the performing arts. The deadline for entries is Thursday, February 12, 2015. The title for this year’s contest is “My Caravanserai,” inspired by SPA’s 2014-2015 education residency, Caravanserai: Malaysia. This three-part residency introduces American audiences to exciting and dynamic artists from the Muslim world and the culture of Malaysia. Travelers along these routes used the caravanserais as safe‐havens where they could rest, restock their supplies, converse with other travelers and enjoy entertainment, no matter where they were from or what language they spoke. The exchange of ideas along these trade routes, facilitated by caravanserais, led to a great cultural exchange between the East and West and was a significant factor in the development of many countries, including Malaysia. Students are encouraged to create artwork inspired by the spirit of Malaysia and the caravanserai: inclusiveness, diversity and the exchange of ideas. Students should consider their own journeys and the story they want to tell about who and what has influenced their life. Artwork with a distinctive Asian or Malaysian quality or characteristic is not required. Successful entries will incorporate this year’s theme and the design element of wayang, a Javanese word for shadow, which plays a vital role in the traditional shadow puppetry of Malaysia, Wayang Kulit. Shadow will serve as the motif for this year’s art contest. All submitted artwork will be judged on creativity, skill and interpretation of the theme “My Caravanserai.” Works on paper, including photography, are permitted. SPA allows only one entry per student and one artist per entry. For rules and submission guidelines, including more information regarding this year’s theme, please visit spahouston.org/artcontest. Visual Art Contest entries may be delivered in person or mailed to Society for the Performing Arts; Attention: Education Department; Jesse H. Jones Hall; 615 Louisiana St.; Suite 100; Houston, TX 77002. Winning entries and honorable mentions will be displayed in the Wells Fargo Student Art Contest Exhibit at the Glassell Junior School from early April through early May 2015. The recognized contestants, along with their teachers, will be invited to an awards ceremony to celebrate with family and friends on February 28, 2015. Winners will be notified by Feb. 20, 2015. Senior contest winners will be awarded scholarships in various amounts. One “Best of Show” award will be given to a graduating high school senior and includes a $1,500 scholarship in loving memory of Viola Davis Rosson, sponsored by Mary and Miguel Espinosa. A “Special Merit” award will also be given to a graduating high school senior and includes a $500 scholarship in loving memory of K.E. “Jake” Jacob, sponsored by Dinah and H. Michael Sultanik. First place winners for each division will receive a scholarship to the Glassell Junior School, MFAH. All winners, including the honorable mention recipients, will receive tickets to a performance provided by SPA. For more info, email [email protected]. John Atlas has been making art in Houston, both painting and sculpture, for over four decades. This exhibition is the most comprehensive show of his art assembled thus far and spans his entire career from his first serious work completed in 1969, to several large canvases completed in the weeks leading up to the installation of this show. The exhibition consists of over eighty paintings on canvas and paper, and a number of sculptures including wooden constructions made as studies for objects that appear in the paintings. Atlas’ mastery of color and composition, and his ability to move from hallucinatory figuration to more surrealistic and non-objective work is evident throughout the exhibition. John Atlas was born in 1952 in Boston, Mass. and moved to Houston with his family at age three. His father, a doctor, worked in biomedical research for the National Institute of Health in Boston, and worked at the local V.A. hospital upon arrival in Houston. He later set up his private practice in Pasadena Tx. and commuted there from Houston. Largely a self taught artist, Atlas dropped out of school at age sixteen to pursue painting and drawing full time. Over the years his work has been shown here in Houston at Sally Sprout Gallery, Graham Gallery, Max Hutchinson Gallery, as well as The Museum of Fine Arts, Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston, and Sewall Art Gallery, Rice University. He has shown internationally in the exhibitions New Art from a New City: Houston in Salsburger Kunstverein, Austria and Art from Houston in Norway: 1982 Stavanger, Norway. The Art Car Museum is located at 140 Heights Blvd. and is open Wednesday-Sunday, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is always free. Please call to schedule tour groups. Sugar is a 10 year old lab who was left at a local kill shelter last month. After 10 long years, of what looks to be breeding her, she was no longer needed and left at a shelter for someone else to worry about. People came and went each day, but as the story usually goes, they take the young puppies and little dogs. Sugar is 10 years old, a black dog with a gray muzzle and feet, and weighs 67 pounds. All odds were against her. Meet ZEKE www.txlabrescue.org Zeke was picked up by a caring driver on Hwy 290 several weeks ago after he saw Zeke literally dodging cars speeding down the freeway. Covered with ticks and fleas, numerous skin lesions and thin as a rail, Zeke stood quietly in the back yard while he took in his new surroundings. He is bug free now, his coat is improving and he has put on a little weight. For a dog, Zeke is incredibily quiet. He seldom whines or barks, but he can be a bit dominant, particularly around food. Lying on the floor in the bedroom, living room, or kitchen is his specialty. And in some ways he is very catlike in that he often approaches sideways and then rubs his flank slowly against your leg. We think he is around two or so in age and appears to be in good health. He is neutered, has all his shots, and chipped. He just needs a good home to love him for the special dog that he is. If you are interested in Zeke, apply to adopt today at www.txlabrescue.org. For additional information, email [email protected]. Until two ladies came across her picture at the pound, their hearts broke instantly, and the rest is history! Sugar is now in a loving foster home. Her sad face and head hung low..all a distant memory! Sugar is in a home with other dogs, both young and old, and she loves them all! Talk about some pep in her step. She loves playing with the others, her tail wags non-stop. She is so appreciative for any amount of loving. She has taken quickly to cuddles, playing and lounging with the other dogs, even frisky with happiness if you will. To boot, she lives with a cat now and just thinks she is one of them. She would do great in a home with cats and dogs and just about anyone. Sugar is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet. When you think of an old dog, think of a dog with life experience & stories to tell. She is easy going, house trained, doesn’t need to be crated, and just happy to be with you. If you think you want to give Sugar the home she has always deserved, please contact Dana at [email protected] for more information! Clooney In Her Own Words: To my friends and family, This morning my good friend said to me… Happy “Weird” Anniversary! So true! It was one year ago today that I went in to Methodist Hospital for my Bi-lateral mastectomy. Is this an anniversary? Is this a day to be happy? June 25th was my year “anniversary” from diagnosis. Was that to be celebrated? I don’t know how I feel about these anniversary dates but it seems to me that in order to figure out a way to be happy with my “new normal” I have to look back at what I have overcome. This is why I am sharing my story with you. 713-691-DEMO (3366) GUS CAMPOS My Breast Cancer Journey in a Nutshell: Dad had just been diagnosed with Kidney Cancer and my annual mammogram reminder came the day of one of his appointments. Ironically, today is the year long anniversary that my girlfriend, Cristl Craig, had surgery to remove her cancer. Even more ironic, the day I sign up for the walk and try to raise money for this wonderful cause, she sends out a fabulous email. Instead of me even trying to write what kind of year she has had and the courage she has shown, I thought I would forward a note she sent to her family and friends earlier today that describes what a year it has been. Ranging from moonlit landscapes by the Old Masters and the Impressionists, to Ansel Adams’ iconic Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico (1941) and shots famously taken on the moon by the members of Apollo 11, the exhibition provides a dazzling overview of five centuries of moon-gazing. In addition, early scientific instruments, books, moon globes, maps, Galileo Galilei’s 1610 treatise on the moon, and objects from NASA will be on view. Edible Delights in the Heights Kraftsmen Cafe & Kraftsmen Baking Houston Ballet’s Center for Dance by Diane Mosier, longtime Heights resident & food lover After telling Owner/Chef/Baker Scott Tycer that there’s nothing quite like the smell and taste of hot just-from-the-oven bread with some real butter or dipping sauce, he explained that it was an early socialization experience stemming from a time when there might only be one kiln or fire bricked oven for an entire village and folks would prepare their own breads by hand and take them to the “baker” to cook them. Houston Ballet’s sleek new Center for Dance will hold a grand opening ceremony on Saturday, April 9 at noon with a ribbon cutting ceremony presided over by Houston Mayor Annise Parker at 601 Preston Street in the heart of downtown Houston’s Theater District. The new, six-story, 115,000 square-foot facility, designed with sustainable features by globally-recognized architecture firm Gensler, will come in around $46.6 million (an estimated $6.4 million under its original projected budget of $53 million), opening ahead of schedule. The building will boast nine dance studios, a dance lab that seats 200 for presentations as well as rehearsals, and artistic, administrative and support facilities for Houston Ballet and its academy.
