ARE YOU AGING INTO MEDICARE THIS YEAR?
This may be the year that you “age into Medicare” (turn 65). Decisions about your health care are complex
and dependent on your individual situation. I am a Medicare counselor, trained by the Alaska Medicare
Information Office and the Seattle Center for Medicare and Medicare Services, and am on staff at ASAC. You
can chat with me any week day from 9 am to 5 pm to learn about websites and publications that you may
want. I can help you enroll in Medicare A and B on line or pick a Part D Prescription Drug plan from the twenty
some plans available in Alaska. We can also discuss the Medigap (Medicare Supplement) plans available in
Alaska.
These conversations with a knowledgeable, unbiased source can provide you with an enhanced Medicare
vocabulary and many resources to assist you in making your choices.
My office is located in the Wellness Office of the Anchorage Senior Center. Walk-ins are welcome but if you
prefer an appointment, call 770-2027.

PLEASE SIGN IN ON THE COMPUTER SCREENS!
Signing-in when you come to ASAC benefits you and helps the Center protect and provide for you!
Welcome to ASAC! When you enter through either the front door or the west door, you see a
computer screen and a sign that says “PLEASE SIGN IN.” This sign-in request is for members,
guests, and volunteers (whether members or guests). Members have been issued a scan card
which they can just slide in front of the camera and be signed in. Absent a card, members can just
enter their names or telephone numbers and be signed-in. Guests just have to touch the word
“guest” on the screen to be signed in. As a part of the sign-in process, you are asked to identify
what activity or event you are at the Center to enjoy. This system has been in place for several
years and ASAC just upgraded its software and added a third screen.
WHY? (1) the most important reason is that for the safety of everyone in the building, ASAC must
know who is in the center and where they might be found in an emergency. (2) In order to
allocate precious financial resources to the programs and activities that most members and guests
want to enjoy, ASAC has to know what the most popular activities are and what days members and
guests like to be at the Center. (3) When ASAC applies for a grant (governmental or private),
ASAC must be able to tell the funding source how many members and guests use the Center daily;
how many hours people are using the Center; and what uses people are making of the Center.
Most importantly, the Center must be able to identify how many volunteer hours are contributed to
the Center on a regular basis. The number of volunteer hours are always an important part of
every grant application so if you are volunteering while at the Center, please be sure to sign in and
identify yourself as a volunteer! (4) Using an electronic sign-in “sheet” saves staff time by
permitting them to spend their time on programs and events instead of standing by the doors and
signing people into the Center. Thus the electronic sign-in system cuts down on overhead expenses
to run the Center.
IS THE INFORMATION SECURE? Yes. When you sign-in at the Center, that information goes
into the computer and unless there is an emergency where you individually must be located, your
sign-in goes into a statistical data base that collects numbers – numbers that tell how many people
are doing what; which programs and activities are most frequently engaging members; what
activities attract guests; and how many volunteer hours are given to the Center.
IS IT SOMETIMES A NUSANCE TO SIGN-IN? Of course, but the reasons why ASAC needs to
have you sign-in are very important. So, please be sure you sign-in each time you come to the
Center. If you need help with the process, come through the front door and Mary Wolcott will go
though it with you. It only takes help once to master the system. If you see people come in and
not sign-in, please help them understand how important it is to ASAC that the sign-in system be
used by everyone!

Is It Time to Renew Your ASAC Membership?
If you join ASAC on an annual basis, ASAC does not send you a bill when it is time to renew your
membership. As a cost-saving measure, this information is automatically included in your address label
on each issue of the Borealis. Here is how to renew your annual membership in ASAC.
1. Look at your address label at the top of this page.
2. In the upper right hand corner find a number followed by a dash followed by a year. The first
number is the month your renewal is due; the second number is the year your renewal is
due. For example, 9-2015 would mean your membership needs to be renewed in September,
2015. (If an “L” appears in the upper-right corner, you are a Life member.)
3. To renew by mail, cut out your Borealis mailing label and send it along with your check to
ASAC, 1300 East 19th Ave, Anchorage, AK 99501. DO NOT SEND CASH. If you want to pay by
credit card, call Accounting at (907) 770-2005 and give card information to the Cashier.
(Please note: If you qualify for annual dues of $15.00, you must come to ASAC;
bring your qualifying letter or tax return; you cannot renew by mail.)
4. To renew in person: Come to the ASAC Cashier’s Window; fill out a form; pay by credit card,
check or cash.
DUES: Individual annual membership is $50; a married or spousal-type couple membership is $90. Dues
for seniors receiving Medicaid, Quest, Alaska Senior Benefits or who earn no more than $20,000
per year adjusted taxable income are $15 a year. You must renew in person and present your
current qualifying letter or tax return.
