February 2015 Leader van den Blink Cites Collaboration as Key to Results 2014 & 2015 Chamber Board Chair Jan van den Blink (The Hilliard Corporation) speaks to the crowd. More photos on page 13. Not surprisingly, the Chamber’s 109th Annual Meeting on January 15th carried an air of optimism which seemed to resonate with the more than two hundred members in attendance. After re-electing Chair Jan van den Blink to another year at the helm, members expected The Hilliard Corporation chief executive to bring a positive message to the podium, and, once again, he did not disappoint. Beyond the strong outlook for 2015, however, Mr. van den Blink did share a caveat that the next plateau of prosperity could only be accomplished by more and stronger partnerships throughout the community. That theme applied to much of the Chairman’s message to members that evening. Some excerpts: • “Our collective response to challenges was our own dogged determination to make things right. And to do it together. As we always have.” • “We applaud strong, positive Federal and State Manufacturing legislation sponsored by our own Congressman Tom Reed and State Senator Tom O’Mara.” • “The Elmira Jackals is Downtown’s most exciting development collaborative. Together, we can capture the promise so many of us still envision, not only for our team but for our community.” • “This year, let’s envision more airport growth, highway funding, mandate relief, manufacturing jobs, tourism promotion, shared services. And certainly more high fives and laughter.” • “We’re not doing all this for the fun of it. There’s too much at stake. We’re doing it because our mission demands it, and our members deserve it.” Members also enjoyed the insightful presentation of John McPherson, whom affable Emcee Steve Kettelle promised, “merges the immediate appeal of Humor with the enduring value of Wisdom.” Led by Presenting Sponsors Chemung Canal Trust Company and Corning Enterprises, along with seventeen additional supporters, the dinner meeting’s program included the election of eight members of the Board of Directors as well as seven Officers. An osprey nesting pole and platform were erected Dec. 23 at Bottcher’s Landing Boat Launch in Big Flats as part of an Eagle Scout project by 14-year-old Jason Drapikowski, a Boy Scout with Troop 3097 in Big Flats. Jason and River Friends hope the nesting platform will be used by osprey to build a nest and raise young along the Chemung River. The second phase of Jason’s Eagle Scout project includes the installation of a pole and nesting platform at the Dunn Field Boat Launch in Elmira in 2015. Jason researched, designed and built the nest platform and secured funding and donations to build the Big Flats nesting platform. Employees from the Big Flats Department of Public Works erected the Bottcher’s Landing pole, which was donated by the Town of Big Flats. The project, valued at over $3,000, was administered by River Friends, which provided guidance and secured permits and land-owner permission to install the pole. Jason got donations of materials and funds from The Hilliard Corporation, Elmira; Hale Roofing, Horseheads; Chapel Lumber, Southport; and the Big Flats Community Days Committee.
