Gloria 1st Reading - Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace to people of goodwill. A Reading from the first Book of the Prophet Jonah We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The word of the LORD came to Jonah, saying: “Set out for the great city of Nineveh, and announce to it the message that I will tell you.” So Jonah made ready and went to Nineveh, according to the LORD’S bidding. Now Nineveh was an enormously large city; it took three days to go through it. Jonah began his journey through the city, and had gone but a single day’s walk announcing, “Forty days more and Nineveh shall be destroyed, “ when the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast and all of them, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw by their actions how they turned from their evil way, he repented of the evil that he had threatened to do to them; he did not carry it out. The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Your ways, O LORD, make known to me; teach me your paths, Guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my savior. R. Remember that your compassion, O LORD, and your love are from of old. R. 2nd Reading - 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 The Profession of Faith Nicene Creed A Reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians I tell you, brothers and sisters, the time is running out. From now on, let those having wives act as not having them, those weeping as not weeping, those rejoicing as not rejoicing, those buying as not owning, those using the world as not using it fully. Repent and believe in the Gospel. R. I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. or Gospel - Mark 1:14-20 The Lord be with you. And with your Spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. After John had been arrested, Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God: “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” As he passed by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea; they were fishermen. Jesus said to them, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Then they abandoned their nets and followed him. He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. Apostle’s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, (bow) who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. The Liturgy of the Eucharist Presentation & Preparation of the Gifts All in All “Pray brothers and sisters (brethren), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.” May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. “Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant us peace in our days, that by the help of your mercy we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress as we wait upon the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Dear Friends, This new year brings to mind the needs of our parish. Many are asking for their contribution statements for their tax returns. I am so grateful to God for you who give so generously to our parish. You give of yourself through prayer, through service, and through money. Would you consider an increase in your financial giving if your blessings from God make that possible for you? We truly need to increase our offertory. Over the past three years our offertory has remained steady; but our expenses for the parish and especially the school have increased. Yes, we have savings. However, we want to use these savings for major expenses and emergencies, or even for creative projects in the future. We will instead use those savings this fiscal year (ending on June 30th) for our routine running of the parish. I have been very prudent in our spending with the help of my staff and Finance Council. Now I believe it is time to let you know that we either need to increase our offering or we will have to make unwanted cuts in the future. Let’s not wait until we are faced with a difficult decision. Again, please consider if you can increase your generous gift to God through His Church in our parish. Love, Fr. CHANGE OUR LIVES In today’s first reading, Jonah, sent by God to warn the people, storms through Nineveh, frightening the citizens out of their wits. It works! They repent before Jonah makes his way through a third of the city, and God sees “by their actions” how they have turned from evil. Then we hear Paul telling the Corinthians that “the world in its present form is passing away.” He calls for a change of heart. He stops short of telling them to set aside their everyday lives, but still he urges them—rather mysteriously—to live as though they aren’t doing the things they’re doing. Finally, Jesus stands on the shore and cries, “The kingdom of God is at hand!” The apostles-tobe abandon their nets and follow him. Thus in all the readings we hear an invitation to a radical and immediate change in our lives.
