Bill’s Byline........
Happy New Year! If you haven’t already, now is the time to set your New
Year’s resolutions.
If you are still thinking about what to do, here is a suggestion. Why not
make this a year to try something new? You don’t even have to go much
farther than the McClellan Senior Center to fulfill this resolution. While
we have a wide variety of programs and activities here at the McClellan
Senior Center, many of our participants who frequent the Center only
participate in one or maybe two of them.
Several of the many great programs offered at the McClellan Senior
Center include our daily lunch program which provides several options
such as a daily hot meal, salad and soup, hamburger or cheeseburger
and a milk all for a suggested donation of only $4.00, our Culture Caravan
travel program that offers nearly 80 fun-filled day trips per year to
numerous locations throughout southern California, and many great
volunteer opportunities for those with time and desire to help our Seniors.
Another program that operates out of the Center is our exceptional Out &
About Senior Transportation Program featuring bus and volunteer driver
services as well as discounted taxi scrip for last minute rides. Of course,
there are a number of fun classes and activities such as our exercise
classes, line dancing, card games, ukulele lessons, painting club, yoga,
a puzzle table, a sewing group and computer classes in our computer lab,
to name but a few. You can see all that is available in this newsletter, so
find something new to try and come and check it out!
We have some fun events in January to kick off the New Year right. On
January 8th we will have our New Year’s Luncheon featuring Senior
Moments, a duo singing music from the 1930s to the 1960s. On January
9th, we will be hosting the North County Community Dance at 2:00 p.m.
in the Park Terrace Café featuring one of our favorite performers, Mr.
Ricky Rivas! On January 16th we will be having the Laughter Buffet
featuring Comedian Sarito Sun at 11:15 a.m., which is certain to bring a
chuckle. Our January activities conclude on the 30th with a trifecta of
events including the Super Bowl Buffet with entertainment by the
Sophisticats at 11:15 a.m., Birthdays and Anniversaries Celebration at
12:00 noon, and the Monthly Movie, Dolphin Tale 2 at 1:00 p.m. in the
Azalea Room!
Happy New Year!

Maia’s Musings
A New Year dawns and my hope is that 2015 will be filled with joyous memories for you. If
your New Year’s resolution included eating better and/or exercising more, then you’re in luck because we
have both at the McClellan Senior Center. In addition to our fabulous luncheons Monday through Friday,
we also have Positively Fit, Yoga, Line Dancing, and Zumba Classes available. Beginning in January we will
debut a free 6 week Nutrition Class sponsored by The San Diego Food Bank. But that’s only the start to a
fantastic month of activities and celebrations. So read on as you plan your first month of 2015.
Join us for a lively New Year Luncheon on Thursday, January 8. Groove to the sounds of Senior Moments as
Randy Renner and Tammaris herald in 2015 with a special tribute to Elvis Presley whose birthday
anniversary is also January 8.
You won’t want to miss the Community Dance this month because Ricky Rivas will perform on Friday,
January 9 in the Park Terrace Café. Strap on those dancing shoes and show us your salsa steps beginning at
2:00 p.m.
We have three Bingo for Prizes dates on January 13, 20 and 27, so let’s hope “B3” is your lucky number. In
addition we also have four Duplicate Bridge for Prizes on January 7, 14, 21 and 28 and four Contract Bridge
for Prizes on January 8, 15, 22 and 29. Bridge is held from 12:30-4:00 p.m. in the Azalea Room on
Wednesdays and Thursdays every month. For more information, please see me.
They say that laughter is good for the soul. That may be but I know you’ll be laughing from your head to
your sole at our Laughter Buffet on Friday, January 16. Sarito Sun, will entertain you with funny stories and
songs.
Finish off the month with our Super Bowl Buffet on Friday, January 30. The Sophisticats will be here to set
the mood for a super celebration before the big kick-off Sunday. We will also celebrate January birthdays
and anniversaries this day.
It’s going to be a fabulous year for the McClellan Senior Center. I do hope you will visit us for a meal, a class,
a club, a support group, a game, a Culture Caravan trip and while you’re here, stop in to say hello. I would
love to wish you a very Happy New Year!
Technology Tip: Social networking is definitely here to stay. Although I am by no means a social networking
expert, I do enjoy keeping in touch with family and friends both close and far away. Facebook, LinkedIn, and
Instagram are three different networks all with their special approach to socializing over the internet. Each
provides easy access to friends, family and even business contacts online. Give one a try and you will be
surprised how easy 2015 will be to keep up on everyone’s birthdays, anniversaries and all of life’s special
moments. Bonus: All three work on your smartphone too.

Start a Tradition: Slow Cooker Sunday
What would be more convenient? Prepare your slow cooker the night before and
refrigerate, or simply toss everything in the first thing in the morning. Then plug it
in and forget about it! You’ll have a delicious meal by dinner time.
Slow Cooker Tips
Keep a few favorite recipes and ingredients on hand, and you will always have a meal
idea at the ready.
No frozen meats. Always defrost meats and poultry before placing in the cooker.
Smaller chunks. Cut whole chickens and large pieces of meat into smaller chunks to
ensure thorough cooking.
Layer your ingredients. Vegetables should be placed in the bottom and up the sides
of the pot, then layer the meat on top.
Fill ‘er up. It’s best to fill a slow cooker to at least one –half and no more than threefourths full.
Keep the lid on. Each time you lift the lid you’ll lengthen the cooking time by 15 to
25 minutes.
Honey-Garlic Slow Cooker Chicken
4 boneless, skinless chicken thighs
½ cup soy sauce
½ cup ketchup
1/3 cup honey
1 Teaspoon dried basil
1. Lay chicken into the bottom of a 4 quart slow cooker.
2. Whisk all of the other ingredients together and pour over the chicken.
3. Cook on low for 6 hours. Enjoy!

SENIOR SERVICES
By Nadine Kaina, Outreach Specialist
DID YOU KNOW?
For elders who have vision problems, not being able to read small print on labels:
Solution: Ask the pharmacist for medication labels to be printed in large print size. At times, people cannot
remember whether they took their medication, so a pill might be taken again, causing an overdose.
Solution: Use a Pill Organizer. There are many types of products available - computerized pill box dispensers that
ring a designated number if the pills have not been taken, and watch alarms and necklaces that ring a reminder.
Low-income elders, or those on fixed incomes, may not have the money to buy the medications they need. Some
will split pills or cut back on the prescribed dose; others will go without for long stretches of time with no
medication.
Solutions:
• Use Generics. Generic drugs are the same medications as their brand-name counterparts, but are less expensive.
Ask if a generic alternative is available.
• Find Financial Assistance for prescription medication. Research Prescription Assistance Programs. Also, ask
your pharmacy about discount programs that are available. Go to the drug manufacturer's website to see if discount
programs are available. And look for low-cost prescription savings plans.
• Visit BenefitsCheckup.org to find out if you are eligible for financial assistance or prescription savings plans.
Interfaith Senior Services is still searching for a volunteer handyman to help seniors with minor home repairs.
Contact Nadine for more information.
Another wrap around program for helping people is the recently opened Interfaith Carlsbad Hiring Hall,
bringing services to hard working laborers on the coast and expanding Interfaith’s services for families at the Libby
Lake Community Center which will be moving into a space more appropriate for its work at 4700 North River road,
Oceanside 92057, 760-721-2117.
The 7th annual “Support Our Community Seniors Training and Tool Box of Resources – SOCS Box”
will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at the San Marcos Community Center, 3 Civic Drive. It is a
training designed for persons who visit seniors in their homes and care facilities. Free, however
registration is required by calling 800.628.2880 by January 23, 2015.
Exercise programs include line dancing taught by Instructor Pam
Jackson, owner of Step Nicely Dance classes for the new six-month pilot
program called Senior Connections. Provided by the Rancho Santa Fe
Foundation, Interfaith Senior Services and Dreams for Change helps give
seniors socialization with once-a-week hot meal choices for $2 at four
different locations: Mondays, Vista Village Mobile Home Park, Tuesdays,
San Marcos Lutheran , Wednesdays at Vista St. Francis of Assisi and
Thursdays at El Dorado Mobile Home Park, San Marcos. For more
information call Nadine Kaina between 8 - 11:00 a.m.
Collecting food from clients during
the month of November was Dr.
Randy Fulton, DCM of Oceanside.
There were over a dozen bags and
one case of dog food donated.
Every client who brought in 10 cans
of food was given a free
chiropractic visit. Dr. Randy has
been a partner of Interfaith Senior
Services for many years and
participates in health fairs. For
more information, contact Nadine
Kaina at (760) 941-0140.
Canine Companions have
a puppy trainer, Phyllis
Slade, who explained
about the program with
the help of Elsa the dog
to a group of seniors at
the Vista Village Mobile
Home Park. Programs
are presented at the
clubhouse each Monday
at noon for a six-month
pilot program called
Senior Connections.

Senior Citizens and New
Year’s Resolutions
For seniors, setting New Year’s resolutions
should be old hat by now. After all, we’ve had
enough opportunities to get it right. Personally,
I think it is fun to set new goals and plans for the
New Year. In fact, I spent this past weekend free
writing, making plans, and writing lists for what
I would like to accomplish in 2015. Senior
citizens and New Year’s resolutions should go
hand in hand as we move into this New Year.
As I write this post, I am remind of what Mark
Twain said:
New Year’s is a harmless annual
institution, of no particular use to
anybody save as a scapegoat for
promiscuous drunks, and friendly
calls and humbug resolutions.
I would cheerfully disagree with Mr. Twain. I
would like to think of each New Year as a new
beginning. For me, each day, week, month, and
year are opportunities to start over and
hopefully get it right this time. It’s a time of
putting the mistakes and bad memories in the
past and moving on with new plans, hopes,
dreams and desires.
You are never too old to plan
Old age doesn’t mean you are already dead. No,
you still have plenty of life left in you. Every one
of us, no matter how old we are, can still make
plans, set goals, and resolve to either keep doing
what works or decide to change what isn’t going
so well. We can still make plans for our health,
wealth, and social life. We can resolve to lose
weight or gain more exercise. We can plan to
renew old acquaintances or shore up those that
have started to drift away. We can plan to read
that book we never seem to get to, or watch a
funny movie once a week to keep our humor
level up where it belongs.
There are any number of ways for seniors to
look forward as the New Year unfolds. It may be
my penchant for positive thinking, but I hope I
never tire of making at least some kind of plans
every year.
Here’s another New Year’s related quote for you
from Eric Zorn:
Making resolutions is a cleansing ritual of selfassessment and repentance that demands
personal honesty and, ultimately, reinforces
humility. Breaking them is part of the cycle.
Letting go of the past and embracing the future
is one of the most positive steps a person can
take no matter how old they are. Writing down
what you would like to see happen in the next
year is a way to solidify your dreams and desires.
It puts your longings out into the atmosphere so
that they can more likely come to fruition.
So, my question to you today – Have you made
your New Year’s resolutions? If not, why not? Is
it because you are a senior citizen; an elderly
person who feels they don’t have that much
time left on earth? Are you thinking why bother,
they never came to pass in the past?
If that is the case, I would encourage you to at
least write one positive thing down that you
would like to see come true this year. Even for
seniors, writing down our thoughts and desires
can make a big difference in our general outlook
on life. Writing out your New Year’s resolutions
is a way to move into 2015 with an upbeat and
positive attitude.
I’ll leave you with this one last quote:
Oprah Winfrey
Cheers to a New Year and another chance for
us to get it right!

GLORIA E. McCLELLAN SENIOR CENTER
The Gloria E. McClellan Senior Center, located in beautiful Brengle Terrace Park in
Vista, California, offers one-stop shopping for area seniors. The multipurpose center
is the ‘Main Entrance’ to a wonderful array of services, classes, and activities.
The mission of the center is to promote the physical, emotional and social well-being
of seniors and to involve them in all aspects of community life. The gift of longer
life means more time to travel, learn, try out new careers and give something back
to the community. Living longer can sometimes lead to greater need and
vulnerability in later years. The center is a valuable resource to access and address
all of these issues.
“It is never too late to be what
you might have been.”
