Sunday Bulletin - Hillside United Methodist Church

PRAYER MINISTRY
“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful”.
All Christians understand that prayer is the starting place
for everything; sometimes we take the power of prayer for
granted. It lifts us up out of the chaos of the moment to a
different reality – where we connect with God and restoration
can happen. The prayer ministry at Hillside includes:
Prayer requests: Submit a prayer request using our online
request form or call the church office. Prayer request cards
are in the red attendance pads during worship or at the
seating area.
Prayer for people with ongoing medical concerns.
Prayer for people facing unexpected crisis events (physical,
spiritual, emotional, financial).
Prayer before surgery: Pastors and trained hospital volunteer
care ministers are available to pray with you and your family
before surgery or during hospitalization. Contact the church
or e-mail [email protected] with the date, time, and
hospital where you will be having your surgery. Due to
HIPPA regulations, the hospital will not inform the church of
your hospitalization.
Prayer during the worship services: Individuals are quietly in
prayer during each of our worship services who have been
trained to provide prayer support and come alongside the
minister at the end of the service as requested.
Prayer for Healing and Wholeness Services: These worship
services are focused on anointing for healing and restoration
of wholeness in our spiritual lives, physical bodies, and
emotional being. Holy Communion is observed.
Prayer for full-time missionaries connected to Hillside:
Harry McSween; Courtney Wilson-Sosa; Bryn Towner; Evan
DeYoung; Jessica Gettemy; Sarah Beecham; Holly Benton;
Corey Hayes; Caitlyn Richards Howe; Sara Schuenemeyer;
Jason, Karen, Sydney & Morgan Gosdin; Allee Rodenbaugh.
Covenant Prayer Team: An ongoing prayer team committed
to daily intercessory prayer for the prayer needs and
concerns of Hillside. They receive a confidential e-mail each
week from the CCM office.
“The prayer of a person living right with God is something
powerful to be reckoned with.”

ASH WEDNESDAY WORSHIP FOR EVANGELICAL CHRISTIANS
Lent (derived from the Old English word for “lengthen,” as in the springtime lengthening of daylight) is a marvelous
time of spiritual new beginnings and echoes the call of John the Baptist to repent, that is turn around, and believe the
Good News. In the name and spirit of Jesus Christ, the historic Church offers an intentional invitation to believers
to get our hearts clean of sin and guilt, our lives re-centered on Jesus Christ and our daily priorities straight. Ash
Wednesday begins this ancient 40-day practice of intentional renewal in preparation for the celebration of Easter.
When I choose to have ashes imposed on my forehead in the sign of the cross I am making two statements. First, I
publically acknowledge and mourn the sin and brokenness of living far from God and, second, I unapologetically
allow myself to be marked as a follower of Jesus Christ and commit to take up my cross and follow Him. Do you
sense the meaningful symbolism?
Ashes were used in ancient times to express grief. Examples of the practice among Jews are found in several books of
the Bible, including Numbers 19:9,19:17, 2 Samuel 13:19, Esther 4:1, Job 42:3–6, Jeremiah 6:16, Daniel 9:3, Jonah 3:6, and
Hebrews 9:13. Jesus Himself spoke of the practice in Matthew 11:21 and Luke 10:13.
Early Christians continued the practice of using ashes as an external sign of repentance. Tertullian (c. 160 – c. 225), an
Early Church Father, said that confession of sin should be accompanied by lying in sackcloth and ashes.
Ash Wednesday derives its name from the practice of blessing ashes made from the previous year’s Palm Sunday
palm branches, and placing them on the heads of participants with the words “Remember that you are dust, and to
dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19) and “Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” (Mark 1:15).
Wednesday, February 18 begins the 2015 journey of Lent with the Imposition of Ashes. Hillside’s Ash Wednesday
services will be held at noon and at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary.
NEWCOMER ORIENTATION
Our next two-session Newcomer Orientation will be held on Sunday, March 8 from 2:00 pm until 4:30 pm and on

New Studies Starting
Before Amen by Max Lucado starts Thursday, February 26 from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm. Join
the journey to the heart of Biblical prayer, offering hope for doubts and confidence even
for prayer wimps. Distilling prayers in the Bible down to one pocket-sized prayer, we
will learn that prayer is not a privilege for the pious nor the art of a chosen few. Prayer is
simply a heartfelt conversation between God and his child. Let the conversation begin.
NEW! Starts Saturday, February 21 from 9:00 am – 11:00 am in Room 2210/2211.
Becoming More than a Good Bible Study Girl. Are you new to Bible study? Are you new
to the Bible? Or returning after a time away? This study will meet for six weeks during
Lent. Discover how to use our Bibles to open up the richness of God’s Word for our
lives; learn how the Word applies to us today enabling us to become the woman God
desires us to be in all our relationships. The first session will include the types and
translations of Bibles – so if you don’t have one, don’t feel like you must get one prior to
starting. This class will help you make the best decision for you!
These groups are still engaged in Breathe; join at any time:
• Sundays from 5:00 – 7:00 pm
• Mondays from 9:30 am – 11:30 am
• Tuesdays from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
• Wednesdays from 9:30 am – 11:30 am and 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
• Wednesday 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm (offsite)
