responsibilities and conviction. He spoke at length of his vision for
the IEI. Reiterating that today’s world is predominantly based on
engineering efforts, Dr. Reddy highlighted the need to include
engineers in the policy-making process. Highlighting the availability
of multidisciplinary solution perspectives for societal challenges
based on IEI’s 15 engineering disciplines, he emphasized the need to
integrate these perspectives and share a holistic interdisciplinary
“Engineers’ Perspective” with the policy-makers spanning
programme planning, implementation, and monitoring.
Pointing out that the rapid pace of advances in technology has led to
the need to adopt a philosophy of “lifelong learning”, Dr. Reddy
stressed the IEI’s capability to support the Indian engineering
profession through its Continuing Education Programmes, and
2
Standardized Certification System to assess and certify
competencies of the workforce.
Dr. Reddy highlighted that contemporary engineering is no longer in
the realm of individual engineering disciplines, but is based on
systems’ perspective integrating the social aspects of the
engineering solution with the design, development, and
engineering of solutions and products. He proposed the need for
contemporary Indian engineering ethos on the principles of
Interdisciplinary Engineering and Systems’ Engineering.
Some of the other issues he discussed during the Fellowship
Meeting included: Capacity Building and Internationalization of The
IEI ; Mobility of the Engineering Profession ; Transforming the IEI
Education System ; Engineering Skill Development: Global
Requirement ; Make in India, MSME, and Incubation ; Science,
technology and Innovation Policy Research Centre, etc.
He recalled Sir M. Visvesvaraya’s postulate “Think and Act
Institutionally”, and sought the wholehearted support and guidance
from all Corporate Members of IEI to enable him to take forward all
these initiatives to bring in a transformation in IEI and thereby create

PISAT - Low Cost Three-Axis Stabilised Imaging Student Satellite
Space technology is relatively young compared to other modern
technologies. However, in only forty years this novel domain has
achieved a tremendous level of complexity and sophistication. The
reason for this is most satellites, once in space, rely heavily on the
quality of their onboard instrumentation and on the design
ingenuity of the scientists and engineers who produce them. A
Consortium of Colleges led by PES University with the help of Indian
Space Research Organization (ISRO) and The Institution of Engineers
(India)-Karnataka State Centre has undertaken one such Satellite
Project named PISAT to enlighten the students about space
technology and provide an opportunity to have hands-on
experience.
PISAT is designed as a three-axis stabilized imaging Satellite and is a
nano satellite weighing about 5 Kgs. The major subsystems are
Payload-an imaging camera - GomSpace NANOCam C1U, On Board
Computer (OBC), Attitude Determination and Control System
(ADCS), RF communication system with S Band frequency, telemetry,
telecommand, Thermal system, Structure and Electrical Power
System (EPS). The ground software has been developed for on
ground orbit determination which is essential for mission
operations. PISAT is aimed to launch in the polar sun synchronous
Low Earth Orbit (LEO), with an altitude around 630 Kms from earth
surface, and an inclination of 97.866 deg which leads to about 14
orbits per day. PESIT has commissioned S-Band ground station
which is the main communication center for PISAT.
launch of Satellite. Presently the Qualification Model (QM) of the
PISAT is ready to undergo, vibration and thermovaccum tests. After
meeting the qualification levels required and reviewed by ISRO,
Flight model readiness is planned.
PISAT development team of Crucible of Research and Innovation
(CORI), PES University hosted a meeting with other participating
Colleges/ University, chaired by Padma Shri Prof. R. M. Vasagam,
former Outstanding Scientist, ISRO to review the activities of PISAT
at PES University, Bangalore on 9 January 2015. During this meet the
team witnessed the Ground station operations, PISAT payload
functioning and discussed on the future activities. Sona College of
Technology, Salem, VELTech University, Chennai, SKR Engineering
College, Chennai, Nehru College of Engineering, Thrissur
participated in the meeting.
ISRO has signed MoU with PES University in the month of July 2014,
which enables to utilize the ISRO facilities for further testing and
