That means that Lent is rapidly approaching. We begin our Lenten observance on Ash Wednesday, February 18. We will have two services that day, one at noon and the other at 5:30 with the imposition of ashes at each service. On the First Sunday in Lent, we will start the 10:30 service with the Great Litany, an ancient prayer of the Church. On Wednesdays during Lent, we will have a special evening service of the Holy Eucharist at 5:30, followed by a soup supper and program. The Pastoral Care Committee has volunteered to organize the first supper. We need other groups or individuals to volunteer to provide a soup and salad type meal for the other four Wednesdays of the series. The topic for the program will be Anglicanism 101. We will spend the five Wednesdays examining Church history and the unique marks of the Episcopal Church. It should be fun and entertaining for most everyone. This series will also serve as the confirmation class for those wishing to be confirmed when Bishop Seage makes his first official visit to St. James' this June. Traditionally, Lent has been seen as a time of denial and the “giving up” of various enjoyments. It is also a time of renewed emphasis of those positive practices we might have let slip in the previous months. Lent started as the time of preparation for those to be baptized as the Easter Vigil. It is still a time of preparation and self-examination. As we prepare with joy to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ at Easter, we become increasingly deliberate in our continual task of assessing our Christian walk. Lent calls us to a time of asking ourselves the hard questions of what it means to follow Christ, to be Christ to the world. We are not always going to be happy with the answers we find. But we live as a people of hope and forgiveness. Before we get into the serious and difficult work of self-assessment into which Lent calls us, we will celebrate together as the family of God at our Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper. This event will be on Tuesday, February 17 at 5:30 PM. In order to cover the costs of the supper, we are asking folks to pay $5 a plate (with a cap of $20 for a family). Please plan on joining us for the fun. As a Christian Community, St. James’ Mission is Ministering in God’s Love to the Spiritual and Physical Needs of all People in the Peace, Name of Christ.
