THE CRUSADES
Ernie Jones
Wednesday

$80
Feb 11, 18, 25, Mar 4, 11, 18, 25, Apr 1
The crusades are amongst the most
interesting, exciting, and bloody
episodes in the Middle Ages in Europe
and the Middle East. They have not
been forgotten, and, in distorted
fashion, are still with us today. The
press still alludes to the crusades, but
unfortunately betrays little idea of their
purpose and what they actually were.
These few lectures seek to rectify this
situation and to see them as
contemporaries saw them, because
above all, they can only be understood
in terms of their time and place.

Feb 26
$10 members, $15 non-members
Australia’s multicultural society has
created a wide spectrum of local
religious communities and practices.
This overview will look at the changes
within the traditional religions of our
historic past and at the same time
explore the growth of many new
religious groups.
WOMEN WHO CHANGED HISTORY
Jan Altmann
Thursday
1 – 2.30pm
Mar 12
$10 members, $15 non-members
In ancient Egypt and Greece women
taught philosophy and mathematics in
the Academies, yet at the same time
Plato and Aristotle taught that women
were inferior to men and this belief
became embedded in western culture.
Hear about some of the brilliant and
courageous women who fought back,
including Hypatia, a teacher and
thinker in ancient Alexandria and
Marie-Anne Lavoisier, a brilliant
chemist. Jan Altmann teaches English
literature and cultural studies.
WEDNESDAY WALKERS
You are welcome to join the Wednesday Walkers. We meet at
the end of Coode St at the pavilion to the west of the Boatshed
Café at 8am sharp. We walk for an hour along the South Perth
foreshore, and then have coffee at the Café.
A Happy & Healthy 2015!
