BABY BOTTLE DRIVE!
Tudor Choir Concert
The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ
Gabriel Jackson
February 21, 7:30 PM
Blessed Sacrament Church
The Tudor Choir and Players present
the West Coast premiere of British
composer Gabriel Jackson‟s The
Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. The 16voice Tudor Choir and 10-member
Tudor Players, directed by Doug
Fullington, are joined by soprano Maria Mannisto and
tenor David Hendrix.
February 21 - 22
Are you looking for a fun, easy way to
provide assistance to women facing an
unplanned pregnancy, and their babies?
The Blessed Sacrament Respect Life
Group and Youth for Life are sponsoring a
Baby Bottle Drive to benefit Next Step
Pregnancy Center (formerly Angelorum).
On the weekend of February 21 and 22, after Mass,
volunteers will be distributing baby bottles at each of the
church entrances. Please take one, and fill the bottles with
change (folded money and checks are also welcome!), then
return the bottles during the regular collection, at any
Mass in the following weeks. Blessed Sacrament is always
very generous to this drive, so thank you!
British composer Gabriel Jackson‟s new setting of the Passion
premiered in April 2014 to enthusiastic reviews.
Commissioned by Merton College, Oxford, as part of its
750th Anniversary celebrations, Jackson drew from all four
Gospel accounts and included the Gregorian hymns for Holy
Week, to create a unique 70-minute Passion setting for choir,
soprano and tenor soloists, and an ensemble of ten
instrumentalists.
Please contact Theresa Schrempp
at 206-525-1223 with questions.
Tickets are on sale through tudorchoir.org or at
brownpapertickets.com. Parishioners receive a 10% discount,
use BSP as the discount code.
The coincidence of Merton College‟s anniversary with the
centenary of the outbreak of the First World War is marked
by a contribution from Edmund Blunden, whose poetry
enables the listener to juxtapose Jesus' agony in Gethsemane
with the experience of the trenches. After the crucifixion, the
final stanza of T.S. Eliot‟s Little Gidding, set to music in this
work for the first time, points towards the resurrection, and
the hope that “all shall be well.”
You are Invited to Participate in
CRS Rice Bowl - Changing Lives
Each Lenten Season, Blessed Sacrament Parish participates in the Catholic
Relief Services Rice Bowl program. In 2015, CRS is celebrating Rice
Bowl‟s 40th year! Rice Bowls are used as vessels to hold the offerings we
place from our Lenten fasts and almsgiving, and as a way to encounter Jesus
through helping others, especially the most vulnerable in our world.
Rice Bowls are available for you to pick up this weekend, February 7 - 8,
in the racks at each church entrance. Please be sure to take one home and
use the resources to deepen your family‟s Lenten experience.
Your prayers, fasting and almsgiving this Lenten season will help Catholic
Relief Services continue to provide life-saving assistance in nearly 100
countries. CRS works on our behalf to care for the poorest in our world
and to end global poverty. Thank you for your generosity!

An epic film on the famous
"Apostle of Rome" and great friend of youth in
the 16th century.
One of the most popular saints of all
time, St. Philip Neri was widely
known for his great charity, deep
prayer life, and tremendous humor.
Hoping to join up with St. Ignatius‟
new order of Jesuits and become a
missionary to India, Philip was instead
guided by Providence to seek out the
poor and abandoned youth of Rome, to catechize them in
the faith, and help them find a better life. He became the
founder of the religious congregation, the Oratory, that
worked with the youth and also labored to re-evangelize a
decadent Rome.

Reflecting Christ Stories
PROCESSIONS
There are three Processions that occur during the
celebration of the Holy Mass: the Entrance, the
Offertory, and the Communion Processions.
A specific Antiphon/Psalm is assigned to accompany each
Procession and are to be chosen from the following
sources (in hierarchical order): (1) The Roman Missal or
Graduale Romanum (2) the Graduale Simplex (3) a Chant
from another collection of Psalms and Antiphons (4) a
Chant suited to the sacred action (General Instruction for
the Roman Missal - 2011).
At Blessed Sacrament Parish, we utilize all four options at
our various liturgies.
The GIRM also specifies various options for proclaiming
the Antiphons/Psalms (par. 48):
This Chant is sung alternately by the choir and the people or
similarly by a cantor and the people, or entirely by the people,
or by the choir alone.
Our Reflecting Christ story
today is about a staff member
in a skilled nursing facility.
Let's call her "Lois." Lois has
worked at the facility a while - long enough to understand why the staff is frustrated and
overworked. However, her Catholic faith compels her to
see the humanity in her patients no matter what stage of
life they may be in. That brings us to the case of Eunice.
12:00 NOON MASS
The General Instruction for the Roman Missal provides
Parishes with varying "options" for the celebration of the
Holy Mass. At Blessed Sacrament Parish, we will be
exercising a few of these "options" at our 12:00 Noon
Mass (weekly) during the Season of Lent:
1) The assigned Entrance Antiphon (introit) will be
chanted during the Entrance Procession (see above).
2) The Lord's Prayer will be sung in Latin.
3) The Schola Cantorum will be singing various
polyphonic settings of the Propers at Offertory and
Communion.
4) We will continue our cycle of singing Dominican Mass
Settings from the Dominican "Kyriale" and Graduale.
The main place should be given, all things being equal, to
Gregorian Chant as being proper to the Roman Liturgy. Other
kinds of sacred music, in particular polyphony, are in no way
excluded...
..it is desirable that they (the faithful) know how to sing
together at least some of the Parts of the Ordinary in Latin
especially the Profession of Faith and the Lord's Prayer.
(GIRM - Chapter II - #41)
CHILDREN'S CHOIR
Blessed Sacrament Parish is looking to begin a Children's
Choir. If you have a child that is interested in joining,
please contact Matthew Loucks, our Musical Director, at
[email protected].
Eunice is actually a sweet and kind, 78 year-old woman,
but a stroke has left her paralyzed on half her body. She is
confined to her wheelchair and can only really say one
recognizable word -- No! On top of that, Eunice has
recently begun a new and very vexing pattern of behavior.
She sits in her wheelchair outside the 3rd floor elevator
and, whenever the door opens, she does her best to dash
inside -- apparently trying to escape. Eunice wears a
bracelet that sets off an alarm whenever she enters the
elevator. So, several times an hour one of the overworked,
stressed-out, staff has to stop what they are doing, retrieve
Eunice from the elevator and attempt to get her redirected
toward another activity. But the only activity Eunice is
interested in (apparently) is escape. The staff's reactions to
Eunice's antics range from frustration and anger to
dismissive ridicule. No one understands why she does
what she does. And Eunice can't tell them.
Lois wishes there was a solution as well, but she sees
something very different when she looks at Eunice. Eunice
has only been an inpatient at the facility for a few months.
Before her latest stroke, she used to visit for a few days
until she was well enough to go home. When Lois looks at
Eunice, she imagines Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane,
on his knees in prayer, pleading with his Father to let this
cup pass. (Matthew 26:39) Lois believes "never being
able to go home" is the cup Eunice wants God to take
away. Seeing Eunice in this way softens Lois' heart and
gives her strength and patience to deal with her patient‟s
constant struggle. Lois thinks to herself, "What would I
say to the suffering Christ just hours before he went to the
cross?" This reflection allows Lois to feel compassion and
empathy for Eunice -- to see her humanity and tend to her
needs in a spirit of love.
I pray that God would grant each of us the grace to react in
a similar way when we are dealing with an intractable
situation that tempts us to be angry, frustrated or
dismissive. Amen.
God's blessing,
Walt Sears
Sunday Forum - C & C
Pastor’s Corner
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Jesus reveals his mission this week: “Let
us go on to the nearby villages that I
may preach there also. For this purpose
have I come.” With these words Christ
goes forth to reveal the knowledge and
love of God by preaching and driving out demons
throughout Galilee. At the same time he calls his first
disciples to join him in that mission; they leave behind
their homes in Capernaum as they first left behind their
fishing boats – without looking back. The mission draws
them farther and farther afield. Ultimately, this mission
will lead these first apostles and their successors to the
very ends of the earth.

Christ calls us to continue this mission; he commissions us,
as he did the first disciples, to spread abroad the
knowledge and love of Jesus Christ. However, this
commission starts with a period of training, a time of
learning at the feet of the Master. As we draw nearer to
the holy season of Lent which starts in a couple of weeks,
this sacred time reminds us that we must deepen our
education, that we must once more be led through the
lessons of Christ‟s Passion and Death in order to arrive at
the Resurrection. It is a time of formation in the
knowledge and love of Christ. But what will form us in
Jesus Christ?

There are, of course, many responses. But one that I often
recommend is a prayerful reading of the Sacred Scriptures.
A daily familiarity with Jesus as he is revealed in the
gospels strengthens us for the mission at hand. One easy
way to enter into this practice is to read and pray with the
gospel proclaimed at Mass each day. Typing „daily Mass
readings‟ into the search bar of your smartphone‟s app
store will produce several options. Or, if you prefer, go
to www.usccb.org (the US Bishops website), click on
today‟s date in the calendar on the front page, and the
day‟s readings will pop up. And, of course, if you prefer a
hard copy, just search for a „Daily Missal‟ and you will find
multiple fine editions.

Blessed are you when people
revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds
of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and
be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the
same way they persecuted the prophets
who were before you.
