in association with
The Summer Reading Challenge
in libraries from The Reading Agency.
Supported by leading children’s publishers.
The Reading Agency is delighted to
introduce Record Breakers.
We are excited to be working with Guinness World
Records (GWR), the global authority in record-breaking
achievements and publishers of the annual
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS TM book. GWR’s mission
is centred on inspiration, inclusivity and celebrating
achievement and personal bests, which reflects the
ethos of the Summer Reading Challenge perfectly.
DIGITAL AND APPS
Record Breakers brings together fact and fiction,
and challenges young readers to explore some of
the astonishing real-life achievements and world
records. Collecting stickers as they go, young
readers will discover the wonderful and wacky
records from around the world in six categories:
Cool Tech, Way to Go!, The Big Stuff, Animal Magic,
Action! Adventure! and People Power.
As part of this year’s collaboration with GWR we
will be looking to set a GUINNESS WORLD
RECORDS title, for the most pledges received for
a reading campaign and we need your help! To set
this record, we’ve created pledge cards (item 4)
which your library will need in
order for children and families to
take part. If we’re successful in
setting the world record, which
we hope we will be, each local
authority will receive one Official
GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM
Certificate which can be proudly
displayed somewhere special in
your local authority.
Please refer to the separate e-mail briefing
document for complete information, or
contact Anne Sarrag or Kate Caldwell.

The children’s website URL for 2015 will be www.recordbreakers.org.uk or
www.summerreadingchallenge.org.uk (both addresses lead to the same site).
Children can create a personal profile here and add books they’ve read to the
Book Sorter.
Following the success of the App last year, we are delighted to announce
that SOLUS will be continuing their sponsorship of the Summer Reading
Challenge digital App. As last year, libraries/families will be able to download
a FREE mobile application onto their devices (iPad, iPhone and Androids) which
will recognise Record Breakers graphics and trigger audio visual content
(videos, messages, facts, simple games).
For example, the A3 promotional poster (item 21) will come alive and show the
annual animated video trailer; collecting the stickers in the core pack (item 6)
and finding the Record Breakers characters in the Treasure Hunt (item 24) will
add gaming activity. We will base some of the functionality on last year’s
activity so this will make some aspects of using the technology familiar and
speed up production, thus ensuring the App is ready in the lead up to the
holidays. With the generous sponsorship from SOLUS, we are launching an
App interface to the Book Sorter, allowing children and families and schools
year round easy, mobile access to this rich crowd-sourced database, as an
alternative to accessing it on the Record Breakers children’s website. As with
last year the augmented reality applications outlined here will not be
promoted to stigmatise those families/libraries unable to access it.
“We really appreciate the generous sponsorship from SOLUS which enables
us to integrate a digital offer with the Summer Reading Challenge and embed
the Book Sorter year round.”
Janene Cox, Chair of the Summer Reading Challenge Strategy Group
SOLUS (www.solus.co.uk) is a Reading Agency sponsor and
a digital company which provides broadcast and interactive
screen technology to a variety of audiences, including library
services, to develop pioneering interactive content for users.
NEW DISPLAY MATERIALS FOR 2015
1
Life-sized Images for Library Displays
Create a mini GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM exhibition gallery in your library space.
This could be a real PR and family attraction at the library; be photographed alongside the Tallest Man
or Smallest Horse etc. These images are made from matt heavy duty paper and can be displayed against
windows or taped/blu-tacked to interior walls. Four pieces of artwork are included in each pack. You will
need space, so these won’t be suitable for all libraries – might work well with museum and gallery partners.
NEW
Tallest Man size: 251cm (8ft 3in) high
Lowest Roadworthy Car size: 45.2cm (17.79in) high
Tallest Horse size: 210.19cm (82.75in) high
Smallest Horse size: 44.5cm (17.5in) high
NOTE: The overall material size will be slightly bigger on each.
Price per pack £113.50

Pull-up Banners
We are making these available to order on the core order form instead of responding to
one-off requests nearer the summer. These pull-up banners are made from polypropylene
with aluminium base and come with their own carry case and are easy to erect. They can
be used to promote Record Breakers at an event, shopping centre, public space or as a
moveable display in the library. Banners can be printed to include any library/sponsors’ logos
along the bottom. We are showing last year’s pull-up banner as an example.

Size: 210cm x 85cm

Ple dge Cards
Pledge Cards are an essential purchase for this year’s Challenge as this is the official item, which
allows children, young volunteers, carers/parents and other adults e.g. teachers, to make a pledge
as part of the record attempt. Please note that Pledge Cards will be available to download
from the resources section of the website but we strongly recommend purchasing the
Pledge Cards from the brochure as printing and cutting the template locally may prove more
costly. Printed double-sided. All local authorities will get one FREE pack of Pledge Cards.

Core Pack

● 100 sets of the three accompanying sticker sheets
(including scratch & sniff stickers) featuring artwork from amazing
records, which will complete the poster when added by the children.
NB: The poster shown is with stickers in place.
As usual, there will be a place on the poster for children to keep
track of their progress and rate the books they’ve read. The poster
is easy to fold up and transport – we are keeping to the same
format as last year after consultation.
Please note: Each of the three sticker sheets can be easily separated into
two smaller sheets (they are perforated), thus creating six mini sheets of stickers

or a sheet per book read.

MATERIALS FOR YOUNG VOLUNTEERS - FREE!
28
Free Young Volunteer Resources
Many library services have found that working with young volunteers has really helped relieve pressure on staff during the
busy summer period. Meanwhile volunteers get some fantastic new skills and experience for their CVs. Last year over 8,000
young volunteers helped make the Challenge a roaring success.
This year’s volunteering is once again funded by the Social Action Fund, and managed by The Social
Investment Business on behalf of the Cabinet Office. The Fund will help libraries - supported by
The Reading Agency - to grow the programme in 2015. English library authorities who sign up to participate
in this development will receive FREE resources for each of their young volunteers.
The young volunteer year round programme is moving from Reading Activists to Reading Hack, and we are
introducing this branding to the range of young volunteer material. Read more about it here:
www.readingagency.org.uk/young-people/001-news/our-young-peoples-programme-the-future-of-reading-activists.html
To make ordering and distribution easier, materials will be available in multiples of 10, so one pack of Young Volunteer
resources will include enough for 10 young volunteers:
● 10 T-shirts (5 adult size medium; 2 adult size small; 3 adult size large)
● 10 Name badges (similar to item 27 opposite)
● 10 Activity log books – A6 size, to record volunteering hours, along with
great ideas and tips to last year round – many created by young people.
● Pens (pack of 10)
● Recruitment postcards – with overprint space (pack of 500)
Certificates and Advocacy Cards will be available as downloads this year.
Please use the order form to order packs after discussing your requirements and targets with your SCL lead.
Overprinting will be free, please see separate Young Volunteer overprinting form.
Please refer to the briefing about the young volunteer offer (England only) sent by The Reading Agency 22 December

Memorandum of Understanding. These login details will be emailed to your main Summer Reading Challenge co-ordinator and
can be shared with all staff in the authority.
IMPORTANT ORDERING INFORMATION:
To make the promotional materials cost effective, all orders need to be received before the print quantity is confirmed.
This is a once-only ordering opportunity and orders must be placed by Thursday 5 February 2015.
Please remember to submit your medal orders by 30 January 2015.
An electronic version of this brochure and a digital order form can be downloaded from The Reading Agency website
www.readingagency.org.uk/children/
Please use the digital order form if possible to save administration. The form will automatically add-up your order so
you can see how much you are spending! A printed order form is enclosed if you prefer/need to attach an official form.
