Hello everyone and welcome to the February issue
of Kelso Life. This time last year I was talking about
the Spring approaching and the daffodils already
coming through, not this year! Let’s hope the daff’s
get a chance to peek through for March’s Kelso Life!
Lot’s of interesting articles in this month’s issue and
I would like to direct your attention to a couple of
them. Firstly on page 28 you’ll find a report from
Peter Fry, the present Chairperson of the
Community Events committee. More volunteers are
needed if we want events like the St James’ Fair to
continue!
Secondly on page 33 you’ll find details of the Kelso
World War 1 Exhibition which takes place in July.
The exhibition group are still looking for people to
share their artefacts, so please contact them if you
have anything you think may be of interest.
Hopefully, over the next few weeks things are
going to heat up a bit. With Spring coming up fast
there will be a lot of events, activities and fund
raisers being organised. Use Kelso Life as your way

Gardening Tales from Woodside
We've talked about Kelsae onions, but have you tried growing other varieties of onions and
shallots? As a main ingredient of a great number of home-cooked dishes they are easy to grow
and store well. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals so have health benefits too.
They are best grown in an open sunny site with good drainage and do particularly well in raised
beds. Avoid freshly manured ground as this can lead to rotting and you should avoid growing
them on the same site every year. The easiest way to grow your own onions is to plant as
"sets" (baby onions). They are usually planted in early Spring, as soon as the soil is workable.
Prepare the ground by weeding and raking and incorporating a general fertiliser such as
Growmore then mark out rows about a foot apart (30cm). Push a single set into the soil along the
row leaving only about 4" (10cm) between them. The pointed end should be at the top and you
should leave the tip just visible.
After planting birds can sometimes be a nuisance and pull them out - just push them back in and
they'll soon root and become secure in the ground. If birds are a major problem cover the sets
with fleece just until they get established. Keep the sets weed free; onions are shallow rooting so
can struggle if they have to compete for moisture and food with strongly growing weeds. A short
-handled onion hoe is the perfect tool for this.
Onions are ready to harvest when the leaves begin to turn yellow, usually in late summer. To
speed on this process you can bend the leaves over to divert goodness into the onion. Use a
garden fork to ease out the onions, shake off the excess soil and leave somewhere dry for the
skins to cure for storing. During a hot dry summer this can be done outside on wire mesh above
the ground to allow air circulation, but otherwise drying off in a greenhouse, polytunnel or sunny
porch would work just as well.
Once the onions are dry gently knock off remaining soil and store in a net bag (or plait the dried
leaves and hang them up) in a cool dry shed. They are ready for use, and if harvested and stored
correctly will keep for the entire winter.
Shallots can also be grown in a similar way as onions and have a unique sharp yet sweet flavour
perfect for salads and open tarts.
Recommended varieties are Sturon (which has an Award of Garden Merit), Stuttgarter Giant and
Red Karmen, and a recommended shallot is Golden Gourmet.
Hopefully once you've tried growing your own onions you'll realise just how easy it is and may
consider entering you onions in the Kelso Horticultural Society Autumn Show.

A Year in the
life of Kelso
Kelso
Blogger
It hardly seems a year ago that I started doing my blog for Kelso Life, but here
we are one year on. Hopefully some are still finding things of interest in my
musings!
The past year has been eventful and there has been plenty to talk about with
the changes to The Square, local events and the impact of the ongoing political
debate with the Referendum what it meant and what the future holds for our
side of the Border. On a positive note, who can forget the fantastic summer and
the feel-good factor from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the build
up with the Queen’s baton relay coming through the town making you feel a
part of the whole event.
As we have seen with the development of the town centre, change can be
a painful process, but ultimately change is inevitable and times must move
on. In the past year new shops and businesses have started up while some
have closed. Even lawyers are not immune to change and while the pace of
change in the legal world tends to be measured in generations, everything has
its time and many would have been shocked to see the long established firm of
Stormonth Darling closing its doors in January. On a personal note, I am sure I
speak for many in the town who will regret the loss of this long established firm
who have practised law in Kelso for some 150 years and, while I have only had
the pleasure of 30 years in Kelso, life will seem strange without their presence
in the town. Our thoughts are with those who have been most affected.
As I write this in the depths of a dull January day and with more winter weather
in store, I am sure it won’t be long before we are back to the hope that comes
with spring and indeed let’s hope for another glorious summer to enjoy this
lovely part of the Borders.

WILL I, WON’T I ????
Well here we go again, waiting to see if the good old weatherman is going to get it
right. It never ceases to amaze me how interested we are in tomorrow’s weather,
it is not as if we can change it!!! I no longer really listen to the weather, when I get
up and look at the sky that’s what the weather is doing, life is really that simple.
Our best friends are much the same I think, the weather is just the weather!! They
don’t really care what it is doing, any conditions this time of the year is great for
walking in. Rain, wind, hail, snow or sun they aren’t choosy, they just enjoy themselves. Not so much the owners, they try to work out which is the least muddy
walk and despite the fact I can walk my dogs straight into the parlour for a warm
rinse off I can feel sorry for the people who don’t have this facility to hand.
Particularly if your best friend has the same habit as 2 of mine have which is Mud
Wallowing….YUK!! They love it, why I don’t know, all I can say is thank goodness for the parlour.
Lots of my clients ask me if it is too cold to clip their dog’s coats and to remove
feathering. Dogs that have been castrated or bitches that have been spayed
normally have an over-growth of coat and the texture changes to a thick woolly
blanket that takes hours to dry. When this happens to is ideal to remove the coat
to a warm wearable length, NOT TO THE WOOD, this may make them cold.
Spaniels of all breeds benefit mostly from this as the ears and feathering is often
so woolly that they matt up before you can get a comb to them and rubbing them
to dry them often makes the problem much worse. Coats of this type can stay wet
for hours after the walk and the dog will get cold. They gather so much
undergrowth and seeds the animals can be really uncomfortable, unable to get
into the coat and remove the offending article. So the answer to “Can I get my dog
clipped or groomed out now” is YES. Please don’t get them taken to the wood, I
call the cut this time of the year “Pretty but Practical”. So much easier for you to
deal with after the walk and a good towelling will dry but not Matt up your best
friends coat. Bonus is of course, if we get snow they can go out and play in it
without getting huge snowballs attached to legs and ears. Enjoy your weather.

Kelso to lose St James’ Fair
Following our recent AGM, it was decided that our diminishing committee could no
longer run another St James’ Fair. We should struggle to resource and fund a Fair
in 2015 without many more folk being involved.
Recent changes also mean our fund raising capabilities have been seriously curtailed
and, as we do not rely on year-on-year funding, it will be especially hard to guarantee
the necessary funds for 2015. That is no reflection on SBC, KCC or CBAH whose
financial support has been most welcome and essential over the years.
The commitment and effort by the committee has, for many years, been exemplary
and it is with heavy hearts we agreed to mothball St James’ Fair and put all our
energies in to future “Christmas Lights Switch-on” events.
The door is always open to resume the Fair but would require working input from
at least 6 new people to raise funds, promote, design, market, administrate, organise
and facilitate the event.
The Christmas lights Switch-On in 2014 was the best ever, but we still need at
least one new member to help administrate and organise the event. And, while the
Switch-On is free to the people of Kelso, we also need your donations to sustain and
expand this spectacular show.
We will continue to do our best for the town and who knows, this may be a wakeup
call for all those budding entrepreneurs out there. In the meantime, the committee is
happy to offer guidance to anyone wanting to stage an event in the town and would
welcome anyone who wants to join our committee. Please get in touch via the Kelso
Community Events Facebook page or drop your details off at Seasons Coffee Shop.

EXHIBITION
13th – 18th July 2015
APPEAL FOR ARTEFACTS
Friends of Kelso Museum have come together with several other
Kelso organisations to commemorate World War One in Kelso.
Working together with Scottish Borders Council Museums Service,
the Friends of Kelso Museum are hosting an exhibition during Kelso
Civic Week.
The exhibition will focus on:


Life at the Front including Gallipoli with its deep
impact on Kelso
Home Front including People, Shops, Business,
Industry and the Farming Community
The group are appealing for
letters, objects, photographs, documents,
stories etc. which people would be willing
to lend for the exhibition.

The Provost Report
First of all I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and may you all get what you wish for.
2014 was a year of change for Kelso and everyone in the town. l hope this year we can all move
on and make Kelso the premier town in the Borders. By all working together we can do it.
2015 is the year when Kelso will be remembering the men of Kelso who were members of the
4th Ba�alion Kings Own Sco�sh Borderers who went out to Gallipoli in 1915. To this end I have wri�en a
book about it which is available on DVD from Season’s in Roxburgh Street. I will be giving all proceeds to
Kelso High School to help oﬀset the cost of S3 Pupils going to the Ba�leelds over the next four years. If
anyone would like to make a dona�on to this very worthwhile project, please send it to Shirley Redgrave

APPEAL FOR ARTEFACTS Friends of Kelso Museum have come together with several other Kelso
organisa�ons to commemorate World War One in Kelso. Working together with Sco�sh Borders Council
Museums Service, the Friends of Kelso Museum are hos�ng an exhibi�on during Kelso Civic Week. The
exhibi�on will focus on: Life at the Front including Gallipoli with its deep impact on Kelso Home Front
including People, Shops, Business, Industry and the Farming Community. The group are appealing for le�ers,
objects, photographs, documents, stories etc. which people would be willing to lend for the exhibi�on.

I was happy to hear some of our older residents telling me they were really happy to see their neighbours
calling in on them. We as a community need to help each other, and look in on our older residents to see
that they are OK and check if you can make things easier for them.
We are s�ll having problems with prowlers. Please lock your doors , check garden sheds and outhouses so
you do not give these people the opportunity to rob you. As I said above please check in on older
neighbours and if you see anything ring the Police and give them as many details as possible. The Police are
working hard to put these people away but they can only do this with your help, so if you know or see
anything which will help please call them. The Police did recover some of the sound system from St John’s
before Christmas. Well done.
The building of the new community recycling centre for Kelso has started and will be up and running by
March year. This is a project which has been made possible by the hard work of our three SBC Councillors.
A new ADS interac�ve screen had been installed by the Black Swan public house. SBC had paid for 350 local
businesses to sign up free adver�sing. If you contact Alan Livingstone he will circulate details to the traders,
so please use it.
The subject of Traﬃc wardens was raised at the mee�ng. SBC had set up a commi�ee to look into the
ma�er. It was conrmed a working group had been set up and SBC were aware of the issue of parking not
only in Kelso but across the Borders region. Various op�ons were being considered. We will keep you
updated on this as we get more details.
Kelso Community Council is made up of men and women who live in Kelso. We are always looking for new
members and it would be nice to see some younger members of Kelso Community to come forward . We all
have something to say why not come along? You never know you may enjoy it, and remember you have
direct access to your SBC Councillors to put your ques�ons to. So Come On and Have Your Say. You never
know you may wish to join us.
Our mee�ng is on Tuesday 13th January at 7pm. If anyone has a ques�on they wish to put, to SBC Councillors
please send it to me or any member of the Community Council and they will bring it up on your behalf but

Broomlands Presentation to Borders Children’s Charity
Earlier this school year P4 worked on a topic about Enterprise. They visited
Tesco in Galashiels to learn about healthy foods. Tesco very kindly gave the
pupils some colourful tasty fruit to take back to school. P4 decided to make
healthy smoothie with this fruit and also produced a smoothie recipe book.
The young entrepreneurs then sold these items to raise money for their
chosen charity The Borders Children's Charity. During the November
Achievement assembly the pupils presented a cheque to them for £170. their
representative, Sonia, was delighted to receive this donation and told the
school how the money might be used.
There was also a representative from Tesco who was surprised by the amount
of money the pupil raised.

Broomlands Christmas Fair
On Friday the 28th of November, Broomlands Primary School had their own
Christmas Fair.
It was a spectacular event with lots of amazing products.
There were lots of fantastic stalls including crafts, food, books and tattoos.
The tattoos were in the designs of : Santa standing next to a Christmas tree,
Rudolph and Santa's face.
For the crafts there were handmade cut miniature fairy houses and little fair
doors. Lots of yummy treats were set out and rapidly they disappeared.
Everyone enjoyed the beautiful books that were put on sale.
In the hall there was a magnificent 'Frozen' stall which had sparkly tutus,
jewellery, fairy dust and hearts.The lady who sold the was very friendly and
she runs a shop called Fluffy Cloud Creations. Also there was a wonderful stall
which had colourful bathbombs in the shape of cupcakes, bright nail varnish
and lovely scented candles.
You could also go and see jolly old Santa Claus and if you did you could get a
sticker and a little bag filled with a chocolate bar, a pencil and a rubber. Many
people waited in line for ages but they all thought it was worth it.
Everyone had a fantastic time and everyone wished that the fun would never
end.

If you have a British Tennis Membership number through Kelso Orchard Tennis Club and are interested in the Club
Wimbledon ticket ballot under new LTA rules for 2015 you have to ‘opt in’ via LTA by 14th February 2015 (previously
31st January but extended by LTA) otherwise you will not even be considered. PLEASE NOTE this is a final reminder to
do so as info has been circulated to all club members already.
3) The Draw account members who have not yet paid are reminded that the £12 pa/pp is now overdue and should be
paid without delay. ‘If you are not in it you can’t win it!!’ If you do not wish to continue with your draw membership

records. NEW DRAW ACCOUNT MEMBERS are always welcome. It costs only £12 per annum and you need not be a
member of the Tennis Club.

KELSO ANGLING ASSOCIATION - The winter grayling season has just ended with few opportunities in January
due to high river levels although some fine catches were made on both Tweed & Teviot in December. The Earlston
Angling Association Invitation Grayling Competition was cancelled due to Tweed being in a spate condition, the level at
the SEPA Boleside station being 4ft above normal level.
The salmon season starts on 1st February, being fly only from the 1st to 14th. It is hoped that there will be an
improvement in returns this year.
The club’s insurance has been reviewed and placed with a specialist broker dealing exclusively with sports clubs of all
types. All Town Season Ticket Holders are automatically members of the Association and are now covered by our
Members Personal Liability Insurance. This is cover for liability incurred by a member arising out of bodily injury to any
person or accidental damage to property not belonging to nor in the member’s care whilst the member is fishing in an
area anywhere in the world used for fishing or fishing related activities. The cover is limited to Inland Waters (No Sea
fishing) and excludes professional fishing. Members under sixteen are not covered unless accompanied by a
responsible adult of at least 21 years of age.
The Limit of Liability is £1,000,000 for any one occurrence and in the aggregate.
An example is that a member whilst fishing does not notice a member of the public walking on the riverbank and
unfortunately hooks the person’s eye with his back cast. The personal injury claim against the member will be covered
by this insurance. Hopefully we shall never need to make a claim but if so please contact me and I shall arrange for
the appropriate claim form to be sent to you. Full details will be included in next year’s season ticket.
Visiting anglers are also covered by this insurance thereby excluding a claim being made against the association.

KELSO BRIDGE CLUB - Do you play duplicate bridge (or have you in the past played)? Would you like to join us
at the Kelso Club? We are currently looking for new members. We are a friendly club and you would receive a warm
welcome. We are affiliated to the SBU. Our hands are computer dealt and marked with instant results. We meet
throughout the year on Wednesday and Thursday evenings for three hours at the Abbey Row Centre. Partners can be

EDNAM BRIDGE CLUB - Are you a bridge player? Or would you like to play bridge? In either case, why not
come along to our club held in Ednam Village Hall on Monday afternoons from 1pm until 4pm (approx), where you will
receive a warm welcome. The Club meets from the 6th October through to end of March 2015 and caters for new
players, improvers and experienced players who are happy to help those who are less experienced. It is a very
friendly club and there is no need to come with a partner as we draw for partners, so you could be playing with a
complete novice or with somebody who has played cards for years. For absolute beginners separate tuition is offered
until such a time as they are ready to join the main group and to progress to other more challenging clubs.
It costs £1 per week to play and 50p for tea and a biscuit with an annual membership of £10.
KELSO STITCHERS - We meet on the 4th Tuesday of the month at 7pm in Abbey Row Centre, Kelso from

KELSO ART GROUP – Is ideal for anyone with an interest in practicing art and crafts, from complete beginners to
accomplished artists and working in a range of styles and media.

SYRINX FLUTES - is a group of flute players with a wide range of ability and an age span of over 50 years. Under
our leader, Lis Dooner, formerly of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, we rehearse fortnightly on Monday evenings,
alternately in Stichill and Melrose, from September to May, and perform in public about 3 times a year. Occasionally,
on Sunday afternoons, we hold open workshops for flute players from near and far. We are always looking for new

A win over Musselburgh in the BT Cup has led Kelso to an interesting quarter final at
Poynder against Hawick. This will be our fourth home tie so that should give us a
chance of success. This game will double up as a Bookers Border League match and
will be played on Saturday 14th February which is the Welsh international weekend but
that game is on the Sunday.
A disappointing away loss to Dundee was followed up with an exciting win over
Watsonians which has to be encouraging for the rest of the season. This was a
Watsonians side which put 40 points past us in the earlier encounter. Important
games upcoming are at home to Aberdeen Grammar and away to both Stewarts
Melville and Biggar. The Biggar game has been rearranged due to a frozen pitch in
December. Due to our cup run, GHA will now be played on Saturday 28th February.
We still have a few injury problems but the situation is definitely improving. The team
seems to be settling in well with their new coaching team of Gary Holborn and Andrew
Skeen. Ewan Ford is also helping with warm ups and conditioning. It must be extra
hard for the coaches as they are both player/coaches
The seconds continue to train and have recorded a couple of wins lately to keep
themselves in with at the prospect of a decent finish to their league campaign as well
as setting themselves up for their annual match with Ponty from South Wales in mid
February.
Unfortunately, the Quins have had a disappointing month and lost a couple of
important games meaning they failed to qualify for the Scottish Youth Shield. However, Blair Robertson has broken into the Borders and East Lothian Under 18 set up
and that may lead to other representative selection
Mini and Midi have not done much over the holiday period apart from the Minis
packing bags at Sainsburys to help raise funds for their annual tour to Ayr. They have
a race night coming up in February and their own Mini tournament will be played on
29th March.
The Ball was held on 17th January and was a success and, perhaps, the numbers will
grow if repeated next year. Arrangements for the Annual Dinner are in hand and that
will be held on April 3rd in the clubrooms.
The date for the sevens has been fixed for 2nd May and we are going back to our 16
team straight knock out event. This year we do not have a clash with the IRB Sevens
in Glasgow.
The RBS 6 Nations is almost on us and Scotland will want to kick on from their good
showing in the Autumn tests. Having 3 games at home is a decided advantage if we
are to compete for the Championship.
We launched our new website around 3 years ago and you may check up on what is
going on by visiting www.kelsorfc.co.uk . Our thanks go to Ian Anderson for setting

up with him if you want to get anything related to the club put up on the website.
The clubrooms have been busy with functions but it is never too late to book the
premises. Both upstairs and downstairs may be booked as well as the kitchen. Any
members who wish to hold an event in the clubrooms should arrange a booking
through Douglas Bell, the Club Steward. In some cases, we may have to apply for an
extension to our license depending on how many members are at an event. We do let
the clubrooms out for regular events like line dancing,
Zumba dancing, Bingo and University of the 3rd Age.

Kelso Golf Club
Although it has been a very stormy and now cold start to 2015 the Sunday winter competitions
continue to be well supported by members. There is a full programme, other than 8th March,
through to Sunday 22nd March when we play for the John Wichary Trophy. The greens staff are
working on the winter treatment programme and we look forward to the benefits of their hard
work during the next season.
Our annual Burns Supper will be held on Friday 13th February and tickets can be purchased from
behind the bar. Tickets are £15 each and include a three course meal and a nights entertainment.
This year the Immortal Memory is being delivered by Robin Dodyk and our Piper is Bob Liddle.
There are also songs, poems and of course the Toast to the Lassies and the Reply. This is always a
very popular night, so make sure you get your tickets booked!
On Saturday 21st February we are holding another “Stars in their Eyes” night in the Tait Hall, this
year with a 70’s theme. Posters for this event are displayed in the club and tickets are now on sale
priced £15 per person for tables in the hall and £10 per person for the balcony. Another very
popular event, this year it is supported by comedian Bert Allan, Spectrum Disco and rock band Dark
Horse. It will be a great night so get your seats reserved by contacting Keith Hook on 07725
051867.
We will be showing the RBC 6 nations rugby internationals on the big screen in the lounge, so why
not come up and cheer your team on!
Our annual Team Dominoes night is on Friday 20th March and teams of 6 are welcome to enter.
Further details on this and other forthcoming events will be posted in the clubhouse and included
in next month’s issue of Kelso Life.
Members are reminded that if they haven’t already collected their Scottish Golf Membership cards,
they are in the clubhouse. These cards give members the opportunity to play other Borders
courses at a discount and replace the discount cards previously given out with the fixture list which
are no longer available.
2015 Subscriptions are now due and can be paid to bar staff during bar opening hours. Once your
subscription is paid, you will then be able to collect the 2015 fixture list. Any member who hasn’t
received their renewal notice should contact the Club Secretary. At the AGM in December a new
membership category was approved for 18-25 year olds, priced at £190. This category is an
intermediate category between junior and adult and gives full playing membership rights. If you
are in this age group and want to join, please contact our Club Secretary.
We would like to thank everyone who supported the club in 2014 and the financial accounts were
better than we had expected as it was a difficult trading year. We also wish to thank everyone who
made contributions to the running of the club on a voluntary basis. This is very much appreciated
and as the current year looks to be another challenging one financially the club will again
appreciate members support and voluntary offers to help on the course or around the clubhouse.
Membership is available in all playing categories and all new members will be made very welcome
to the club. Social membership is also available. Further details are available from Club Secretary,
