Literacy—Grade 3
Journal
Conferring
You need describing words so your sentence is
awesome. You need creative writing so your
writing is creative. In journal, you have to have
complete sentences because its part of our goals.
We use stamina because it gives our brains a
fresh start. We use senses because it makes us
dig deeper into what we are doing.
We are reading chapter books and picture books. In
conferring, we are picking a just-right book. In
conferring, we are using strategies like predicting,
connecting, wondering, visualizing and questioning. We
have a notebook and we use sticky notes. We use
strategies like Spinner the Spider, Questioning Owl,
Digger the Dog and Jabber the Reteller.
By Hannah R—Grade 3
By Garrett G—Grade 3
Inferring
Handwriting
In class, we are doing inferring. Inferring is
when you look at a picture and guess what is going
on on that page. We also use National Geographic
books. You also have to be a detective using clues
from the book and use your schema plus
predictions. You can also use poems or nonfiction (non-fiction is based on true stories).
Inferring can be used by all grades and people
that get home-schooled. Most people can use
inferring and it is also used in conferring.
By Olivia C and Jada M—Grade 3
In Grade 3, we are learning
f, t, g, i and a lot of
other letters and words, for example writing the
word
the.
What I like about handwriting is writing my
name, Ella. It looks very pretty. I know how to write
my sister’s name and my mommy’s name. I’m having
lots of fun learning how to handwrite and look forward
to learning all the letters. It’s important to know how
to handwrite so that we can learn how to read it.
By Ella C—Grade 3
Literacy—Grade 5
Our grade five class has been learning about many cool things during our literacy time. We’ve recently wrapped up our
strategy study on questioning. We learned some marvelous things about questioning, like that there are two different
types of questions, thick and thin. Thick questions are the ones that might not be answered throughout your book and
maybe leave you on a cliff hanger. Thin questions will probably be answered in your book and are more simple types of
questions. We have just started learning about visualizing and so far we have learned that visualizing is like making a
movie in your mind. We also use all five senses when we visualize. We are currently doing a Roald Dahl book project. We
each got to pick our own Roald Dahl book to read and then decided between re-creating a scene from the book using a
variety of materials or writing a letter to Roald Dahl. We are also all presenting book talks on our novel. These are the
interesting things the grade five class has been learning about in our literacy time.

Counsellor’s Corner
The focus of this month’s edition of Counsellor’s Corner is on connection. Many experts in the realm of raising children and fostering resiliency
would consider this one of the most important of all of the C’s. Connection refers to the relationships we have with family, friends, school and
community. For children to develop resiliency, it is imperative that they develop good, healthy relationships. In their book, Hold On To Your Kids,
Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Mate, MD, emphasize the importance of building strong parent/child relationships. Fostering connection is really about
spending quality time with your child, preferably doing things that promote face to face interaction and communication. Activities to build
connection may include:





Eating meals together as a family
Asking kids to help you with things around home
Having fun together – board games, building snow men, doing activities together, creating things – use your imagination!
Spending time just talking and listening
Addressing and resolving conflicts within the family – family meetings
Also important to the development of connection with your children are things such as:




Making your home a physically and emotionally safe environment
Helping your child to express and accept all emotions in healthy ways
Maintaining appropriate boundaries
Showing and telling your children that you love them
In addition to building your relationship with your child, it is also important to encourage your children to develop positive healthy relationships with
extended family, community, and friends. Getting them involved in events in the community, spending time with extended family and friends, and
providing opportunities for interaction with peers are also important as these relationships will provide supports in times of challenge and stress.
As always, it is important to remember that we as the adults in our children’s lives are their models for what relationshipsare like, therefore it is
important that we model healthy relationships and get any support we may need in order to have healthy relationships for ourselves.

Library News
We have new cozy reading corners in the library. They have been
completed by donations and literacy funding. For the fireplace area, thank
you so much to the following families: Lingnau’s for the lamp donation,
Micaci’s for the fish tank, and Mr. Wilcox for building two end tables.
There’s a few final touches to come, and it will be finished.
We have also added a new tall shelf to the fiction section. This
section is used more than ever as the enthusiasm for fiction increases in
our school. We are constantly adding student-suggested books and we have been hearing about those
special books that were given to students for Christmas! That love of reading is happening for so many of our students.
Please continue to listen and talk to your children about the kinds of books they are reading.
Our health nurse, Nicole Goldbeck, donated books to our library. Also, Sylvia Chave donated a CD called “Rattle and
Strum”. The Grade Four class will be assembling a wooden dinosaur donated to the school by Zabina Edwards and it will be
displayed in the library. A big thank you to all of you, and also to our shelvers this month: Shauna and Cary.
* If you would like to start volunteering in the library, we would love to have your help. *
To all the Staff, Parents and Students who participated in a mini-documentary
about my literacy journey, created by Bamboo Shoots/SaskTel Max TV, I could
not have done it without all of your support! I truly want to thank you from
the bottom of my heart for your kind words and taking part in this incredible
journey I am on!
A special thanks to all the bright, fun, energetic little ladybug students from
Mr. Sauer’s room, you made my day! I am so grateful that your parents/
guardians said yes to taking part in my “Ten Little Ladybugs in my Jar”
presentation. Thank-you for having so much fun; your animated actions with
the book were priceless! Keep making reading and writing fun!!
