Transition Assistance Accessing Higher Education
Workshop
FEB 17-18 • REGISTER BY FEB 11
“Aviano’s Airman Leadership School
(ALS) completed its biennial Program
Management Review conducted by the
Barnes Center for Enlisted Education. The
program was deemed to be compliant on
100% of the 109 checklist items inspected
across twelve ALS program areas. This
is a rare feat for any of the 68 schools
AF-wide and is a first for Aviano’s ALS.
Additionally, the school garnered a second
perfect program management inspection
by having zero findings during its annual
GPC program surveillance. Among all the
inspections and actively teaching a class
of 41 students, the ALS staff has continued
to give back to the Wing by orchestrating
the Wing’s annual Storytellers event
in December, and supporting CFC by
providing a person to serve as the FSS
project officer. Finally, Aviano’s ALS
continues to lead the way in USAFE with
the best ALS training rate in the command,
currently at 73.6%. That is 21.5% above
the USAFE average and 25.7% above the
AF average.”

I was so excited to see horseback riding offered on Outdoor
Recreation’s new line up of trips this fall! Being a novice
rider, my husband was not as excited but promised to
come with me. Our experience levels were different but
I was reassured that it was acceptable for even the most
inexperienced person. After the short two-hour trip in the
passenger vans, we were greeted with a gorgeous view of
the vineyards at the cantina. There were many first-timers
in the group, so the owner took his time to pair the right
horse to the right rider. Then we were off! We traveled by
horseback through vineyards, up the mountain, through
the woods, around rocks, and were greeted with beautiful
views of the surrounding area. Two hours later, the eight of
us gathered around the table for the wine tasting and pizza
pairing portion of the trip. We all had fun stories
about the day and had the most enjoyable time
sampling. The wines were regional specific varieties
that resulted in a very hefty purchase at the end on
my part. If I could have purchased the pizzas too,
I would have! My husband was already making
plans on going back as soon as possible. This trip is
ideal for meeting new friends or putting together a
small group of existing friends to share the day with.

Congratulations
Ms. Paola Duerden
“Ms. Paola Duerden is my secretary
and the vital source of information and
communication in the squadron. Every
day she processes multiple vital E-SSSes
ranging from MOAs, awards packages,
funding, and personnel actions that
Directory
affect the lives of the Airmen of FSS
and the Wing ensuring the packages
meet the highest standards. She also
serves as a crucial link to the group and
other squadrons, coordinating with their
secretaries on schedules, document
tracking and event planning. Her efforts
ensure that the Squadron is represented
in the best possible light to the rest of
the Wing. In addition to her duties as
secretary, Ms. Duerden processes civilian
pay and time cards, and organizes FSS
functions such as potlucks and goingaway parties. She truly epitomizes what
it means to put service before self and
promotes customer service that is vital to
our purpose as the Aviano FSS.”
