February 2015 Dear Families of Guardino Students: It is hard to believe the end of the second marking period is already here. The school year is moving ahead very quickly. Staff and students are focused and working hard as we enter the third marking period. We continue to set our goals very high and are focused on the success of the students. As you know, the NYS ELA and Math tests will be administered in April for students in Grades 3-5. Stanford tests will also be administered this year for students K-5. Stanford tests will be administered the week of May 4th. Classroom teachers will forward more detailed information about the testing schedule prior to the date of administration. Report cards will be sent home with students on Friday, January 30th. Parents need to return only the “Parent Signature Comment Sheet”. Please understand the report card is only one avenue of communication regarding your child’s progress. Guardino staff members are always available if you have questions. Feel free to contact the school anytime you would like to discuss the progress your child is making. Parent involvement is a key factor to help ensure student success, so please keep the lines of communication open with your child’s teacher. I would like to take the opportunity to remind you about our dismissal procedures. If you pick up your child at the end of the school day, please do not park in the street and wait for your child to meet you at your car. Parking in the street creates an unsafe situation for parents / children who are parked in the lot and walking to / from school. As communicated in the past, I am strongly requesting all parents park in the parking lot and meet students at a designated spot. Your assistance to keep dismissal time safe for the students is appreciated. Our mid-winter break takes place from February 16-20. Hopefully, the February break will provide you with an opportunity to get outside and enjoy some winter activities. Ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, snowshoeing and skiing are all activities that can help us to beat “cabin fever”. You may also have some time with your children to practice math facts and read a good book! It is my continued pleasure to work with your children. Thank you for your support of our fine school. Sincerely, Joyce Clark Principal EARLY ARRIVAL CONCERN Many of our students are arriving at school before 8:30 a.m. Parents / Guardians should be aware that there is no supervision available prior to the scheduled arrival time. SCHOOL NURSE NEWS from Mrs. Ward, RN New York State has made changes in the immunization requirements for school entry that will take effect on July 1, 2014. New York State has revised the regulations to bring NYS requirements in line with current ACIP guidelines. (Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices) Students who enter 6th grade and are 11 years old or older are required to receive an immunization containing tetanus toxoids, diphtheria, and acellular pertussis (Tdap). For the Tdap vaccination there are two options available regarding students who are 10 years old when they enter 6th grade: 1) Vaccinate using Boostrix, which is licensed for persons aged 10-18 years. 2) Delay vaccination until those children are 11 years old, in which case they will be flagged and tracked and required to receive the Tdap vaccination when they turn 11 years old. Those students will also need to have 2 doses of Varicella vaccine to enter 6th grade. The Varicella does not have an age attached to the requirement, so whether your child is 10 or 11, they will need two doses of the Varicella vaccination to start 6th grade. The good news is that the majority of students already have the 2 doses needed. Common practice with most of the pediatricians for the last several years has been to administer the second dose of the Varicella vaccination between 4-6 years of age at the same time that the second MMR has been routinely given. School Nurses have access to the New York State Immunization Information System. (NYSIIS) NYSIIS is part of the NYS Department of Health, Health Commerce System. It allows access to immunization records. The immunizations should be entered by the health care provider that administered the immunizations. I am in the process of going over every immunization record for every student enrolled at Guardino. What I am finding are some issues with immunizations that are not valid. For example the 3rd Hep B immunization may have been given at too early an age. The NYSIIS system tracks and marks the entry as invalid and also provides the reason why the immunization is invalid. I am also finding incomplete records in NYSIIS. Your child may be fully immunized, but the health care provider has not entered the data into the system. I hope to have letters mailed to all 5th grade students before our April vacation. The letter will detail what your child needs to start 6th grade. I will also provide a copy of the NYSIIS print out of your child’s immunization record for you to keep for your records. You have options to secure the required immunization for your child. You may have your child immunized through your health care provider. Public Health offers immunization clinics every Wednesday from 12:30 – 3:30pm. Call to confirm their hours of operation and your child’s eligibility to receive the immunization at their clinic. (786-3720). When you do have your child vaccinated, please obtain a copy of the shot and bring it to the school nurse. Students have to have proof of the immunization for their health record. PHYSICALS School physicals are scheduled for Tuesday February 24th starting at 1pm. This will include second, fourth grade and any new students that have not provided a physical from their health care provider. Your child will or may have already brought home a notice that they will require a physical exam. Please call with any questions or concerns. KINDERGARTENERS I hope to start routine school screening for HT, WT, vision, and hearing for all our K-Kids. You will be notified if there are any concerns. SCOLIOSIS SCREENING I am beginning to prepare for the annual scoliosis screening. Scoliosis is curvature of the spine. It is a simple exam preformed mainly by observation and inspection of the back. New York State requires all students in grades 5 through 9 have an annual scoliosis screening. . Fifth grade students are screened privately, one on one with the school nurse. Students do need to have their torso exposed in order to view the spine effectively. When in private, your child will be asked to remove their shirt. If your child is uncomfortable, they will not be forced to remove any clothing. You will be notified if there is a suspicion of scoliosis, so you may follow up with your health care provider. Please feel free to call if you have any questions or concerns. LOOKING FOR Used sneakers in smaller sizes, but will take any size. Sweat pants or jogging pants in any size, but the smaller sizes are what I need the most. Gently used boys underwear (I have plenty of girls) T-shirts If you have any of the above items, please drop them off in the Nurse’s Office! Thanks! Guardino Elementary February ART NEWS The Sculptures Are Coming! Kindergartners have learned to draw dinosaurs and animals using an oval as the base shape and adding to the parts needed to create the dinosaur or animal. They will then select a dinosaur or animal for their sculptures. Ask a Kindergartner: What dinosaur or animal have you selected for your sculpture project? Why do you think you were taught to draw dinosaurs and animals using an oval? First Graders will be figure drawing. They will draw each other using shapes. They will be learning how to draw different poses. This is in preparation for creating their person sculpture. Their person sculpture is required to “be doing something not just standing”. Ask a First Grader: What active position do you think you will choose for your person sculpture? Second Graders sketched their ideas for a realistic or fiesta animal pose. Each student will be creating the foundation for their sculptures. If you have any interesting shapes in your recyclable bin (quart and half gallon maximum size) please save them for your child’s animal sculpture. After the foundation is taped, they will be applying the plaster craft to make their foundation into a more permanent, hard paintable surface. Ask a Second Grader: What animal did you select for your sculpture? Did you choose a realistic or fiesta pose? What shape do you think would be best for your animal’s body? Every art lesson focuses on one or more of the 7 Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Space, Form, Color, Texture and Value. Every grade 2 through grade 5 student should know these 7 Elements of Art. Third Graders have completed working on their stilllife paintings. They will be using a shadowing effect to create the illusion of 3D (three dimensional) objects on a flat piece of paper (Form). Next, they will utilize the Texture element of art as they draw animal faces and prepare to create their cultural masks. Ask a Third Grader: Which of the 7 Elements of Art did you use in your still-life and landscapes? What elements do you focus on when contour drawing? If you are creating the illusion of objects using shadow, how does that fit into the definition of form? Fourth Graders completed a still-life painting using triangle composition. They will be drawing animals using a Line drawing method. Students will be selecting an animal indigenous to New York State. The animal they select will be used as their totem animal. The Iroquois Indians were indigenous people to New York State. Students will sketch an idea using that animal for an Iroquois totem necklace. Ask a Fourth Grader: What does indigenous mean? What animals do you think are indigenous to New York State? What animal are you considering for your totem necklace? Fifth Graders will be creating their final bug drawing. They have learned many ways to draw animals, birds and bugs. It’s amazing to see the difference between their first animal drawing and their final animal drawing. Next, they will create a sketch of the pose they would like to create as a sculpture. Ask a Fifth Grader: What pose do you think you will choose for your sculpture? What "action" will it portray? Have you thought of a good title for your sculpture? Thank you for your support! The singing is improving by leaps and bounds … remind them to keep working on the verses to their songs. Recorder playing is going well and the fourth and fifth grade students should be practicing their recorder pieces at home too. If they are squeaking, then they know that they are blowing too hard … have them quiet down. March is “Music in Our Schools” Month, be sure you stop in and see a concert! Here is the schedule for the Concerts at Guardino Elementary: March 18, 2015 – Grade 5 Concert - 7pm March 19, 2015 – Grade 1 and 2 Concert – 7pm March 26, 2015 – Grade 3 and 4 Concert – 7pm Mrs. Beerman GYM DANDIES Ms. Grover / Mr. Hauck We have all seemed to make the adjustment to 2015 rather nicely! Classes are continuing units in basketball, tumbling and challenges. We hope to be skating this month with the 4th and 5th graders; more info to follow. Snow fell during January but we have not been able to begin our sledding and snowshoeing units to date. When we have adequate conditions and weather, we will try to get outside and enjoy the North Country winter. Notice will be given in advance to allow students to bring in the appropriate outdoor apparel which includes a winter coat, hat, mittens, boots and snow pants if available. As always, our fitness unit remains ongoing. A quick reminder that sneakers and layered clothes continue to be necessary for our regular classes. If you have any questions/concerns, please feel free to contact us at 686-5578, Ext. 3640. The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Thursday March 26 at 8:00 am. We hope you can be in attendance. Our agenda includes: Treasurer’s Report, update on Cherrydale fundraiser sales, and discussion of end of year events. We welcome your thoughts and suggestions. Please contact the main office if you have comments to add to our scheduled meeting agenda. Thank you! February Viking Corner The February “Viking Corner” will be on Friday, February 6. The school store will be open for First – Fifth Graders from 11:30am—1:10pm. The boys and girls may shop during their lunch time. There are a few new items for sale: mini notebooks, dry erase markers, wild animal pencil toppers, scented pencils, eraser brushes, snowman pens (grades 3-5) and pencils, and wallets. The items range in price from $0.05-$1.00. It helps if the boys and girls have their money in an envelope with their name and their teacher’s name on the front. All monies from Viking Corner go to our Guardino PTO. The PTO is responsible for River Rat Readers, school-wide reading events, and assemblies. Thank you for your continued support of our students! We are always in need of volunteers to help our shoppers. If you would like to help out at the monthly Viking Corner please contact Mrs. Keszler (686-5578, ext. 3003) to set up a time.
