FEBRUARY 2015 The Breezeway 3 A Special Gift For a Special Person 4 The Breezeway FEBRUARY 2015 By Karen Roth Tips from a Local Girl Baby, It’s cold outside…. February is a great time for going on a special date with your sweetie! This month is blockbuster month, featuring some of the year’s most important movies just before the Oscars. We have 3 local movie theaters near us… The Regal Cinema in Manahawkin, Seacourt AMC in Toms River and The Marquee Theater on Rt. 37 W in Toms River. I recently saw “Into the Woods”, “Unbroken” and “The Imitation Game” and all had Golden Globe nominations, and some wins! I enjoyed all of them. My local girl tips: Get yourself a Regal Rewards card (it’s free). We get free tickets, snacks and drinks probably every 3 times we go. They also have $2 popcorn on Tuesdays with your card. The Marquee features stadium seating with comfy rocking chairs. My suggestion here is to end your date with The Fortune Buffet (the best Chinese/ American buffet around). season of the year. All kinds of decorative items, curtains, pillows, flowers, etc., etc. , etc. You could be there a long time! My Local girl tip: Before or after you shop try The Turning Point for breakfast, brunch or lunch in that same strip mall. The food is delicious and it has a special atmosphere…. But it closes at 3pm everyday so you have to make a plan because the Christmas Tree Shop always takes longer than you think it will! http://www.theturningpoint. biz/Locations/Brick Winter At The NJ Shore For all of you bowlers out there… Playdrome Lanes on Rt. 37 East has senior specials on Sundays from 8-12 for only $ 2.25 a game and on Mondays from 2-5pm, it’s $8 per person for all the games you can bowl! They have Senior Leagues daily, call if you are interested. Here are 3 popular restaurants up at the beach: How about Sunday Brunch at the Grenville in Bay Head? Brunch is served from 10-2pm for $14.99 or $9.99 with the coupon from their webpage or ValPac. I was there recently and it was very nice, omlettes made to order, etc. The Grenville is a 125 year old Victorian B&B on Rt. 35. Klees Bar &Grill in Seaside Hts. is a local favorite. It features thin crust pizza and steaks and has 16 beers on tap. The Crabs Claw in Lavallette has a quaint atmosphere and features an Early bird special M-F from 11:30-6pm and Sat. and Sun. from 11:30-5pm. If you haven’t been to The Christmas Tree Shop yet on Rt. 70…. You have to take a trip to Bricktown. If you’ve never been, it’s not just Christmas, it’s every We accept no responsibility for any advertisements. If there are any complaints concerning an advertiser, please contact them directly. Windows 10 you say? What happened to 9? According to the joke going around, seven ate nine. It may have something to do with Microsoft's concern about causing confusion with what is known in technical circles as the 9x series (Windows 95, 98, etc.). Who other than Microsoft would even care about that? Or it could be that Microsoft just wants to leave as much separation as possible between Windows 8 and the new one (code named "Threshold"), which is supposed to be the last major Windows update. Well, good riddance to Windows 8 as many of us hated it more than Vista. Microsoft never seems to understand that if it ain't broke, you don't need to fix it. m • PROUDLY SERVING MONMOUTH & OCEAN COUNTIES SINCE 1985 or Design for Every om in Your Home Custom Window Treatments • Fine Furniture • Decorative Accessories m Window Treatments • ture • Decorative Accessories Anyway, Windows 10 should be a hit, particularly with mature folks like us who were not crazy about the "Metro" look which made the computer screen appear like an over-sized iPhone. Although most of the changes are under the hood where Microsoft engineered the system so it will work with just about anything, the most noticeable improvement will be the return of the start bar. This time you will see the familiar start menu, but there will also be a customized space next to it where you can place your favorite apps and live tiles. Some live tiles come by default, but you can remove them completely or replace them with others you would rather see. Other changes include bringing the search box back to the start bar as well as not having apps take over the entire screen. People who like running multiple apps will appreciate a new feature that lets you split the screen into four quadrants and run a different program in each of them. There have also been some changes to the File Explorer where it will now show your recent files and frequently visited folders which will make it much easier for you to find things you have recently worked on. ding great value, ptional quality and So if you're thinking about getting a new computer, meless designs it may just be worthwhile waiting a little longer. he past 28 years. ELIZABETH PINIZZOTTO of TOMS RIVER ads-3159 FEBRUARY 2015 The Breezeway 11 George Washington's Birthday (observed) (Courtesy of Almanac.com) Although George Washington's birthday is celebrated on February 22, it is observed as a federal holiday on the third Monday of February. To complicate matters, Washington was actually born on February 11 in 1731! How can that be? During Washington's lifetime, people in Great Britain and America switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar (something most of Europe had done in 1582). As a result of this calendar reform, people born before 1752 were told to add 11 days to their birth dates. Those born between January 1 and March 25, as Washington was, also had to add one year to be in sync with the new calendar. By the time Washington became president in 1789, he celebrated his birthday on February 22 and listed his year of birth as 1732. Upon entering office, Washington was not convinced that he was the right man for the job. He wrote, "My movements to the chair of government will be accompanied by feelings not unlike those of a culprit, who is going to the place of his execution." Fortunately for the young country, he was wrong. Restaurant Review The Octopus Garden The Octopus’s Garden is located at 771 South Main Street (Route 9) Mayetta, NJ 08092; (609) 697-8828. http://theoctopussgardenfishhouse.com/. Its specialty is seafood although it also serves other dishes. We are always looking for new restaurants and went here with friends at their suggestion. We all enjoyed New England chowder and French onion soup. We followed this with dishes of sea scallops, flounder and a Frutti de Mare delight. Each weeknight is designated as its own “Special Night”. Sunday is “Half priced Appetizers and Desserts Night” served all night long (with the purchase of an entrée). Tuesday is ”Shrimp and Crab Night,” Wednesday is “Fresh Fish Night” and Thursday and Fridays are “Lobster Nights.” On Saturday appetizers are half priced from 4:30pm until 5:15pm. For guests who are landlubbers, The Octopus’s Garden offers a wide selection of alternatives such as Rack of Lamb, Roast Duck, Chicken, Steaks and Pastas.
