HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 1, 2015
“Moses spoke to all the people saying, ‘A prophet like me will the
Lord your God, raise up to you from among your own kin; to him
you shall listen.’… ‘This was well said. I will raise up for them a
prophet like you from among their kin, and will put my words in
their mouth; he shall tell them all that I command them.’”
The books of the law of Moses, clearly describe the unique
relationship of the lawgiver with God. Ascending and descending
the mountain with the tablets of the law in his hand, he led God’s
people then, making the covenant between the Lord and His
people.
Prophets were called to speak in behalf of God, reminding them of
their unique relationship with the Lord and chastising them for
their infidelity in observing it. They, like Jesus, spoke with
authority.
Our world today needs to listen to prophetic voices, calling us from
complacency to renewal and greater awareness of our covenant
relationship with God. Pope Francis, Pope Benedict, and other
witnesses fill that role for us. Called by the Lord, inspired by the
Spirit, their words and witness bring us back to oneness with God.
Writings like the ‘Light of Faith’ and ‘Joy of the Gospel’ are texts
directed to all believers.
“To them you shall listen.” Take some time to read.

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
First Reading: Deuteronomy 18:15-20
Moses explains to the people that a prophet will come from
among them, and that they should listen to this prophet’s words,
for God has told him of this prophet. God also tells Moses that
anyone who pretends to speak in his words, or speaks in the
name of other gods shall die.
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:32-35
Paul tells the Corinthians how an unmarried man or woman is
able to devote themselves fully to God without concern for the
needs of a spouse. Paul explains that God wants to help them
promote good and devote themselves more fully to God.
Gospel: Mark 1:21-28
As Jesus was teaching, a man with an unclean spirit came to the
synagogue and asked if Jesus had come to destroy them. Jesus
ordered the spirit out of the man, who shrieked violently as the
spirit departed. The people were amazed at the authority he had
over the spirit.

Month 5
Mommy felt me kick!
This month marks the half-way point to
birth, and the baby is very active. Sleep
habits develop and his mother can feel
him move and stretch, particularly when she is resting. He is
big and strong enough to kick hard against the outside
uterine wall and dent it. Up to now, although he swam with
ease in his watery world, he was too small for her to detect
because the inside wall of the uterus has little feeling.
Babies born at this age have survived.
