In this newsletter you will find information about upcoming events, stay up to date with our associate ministries, hear from John Torrison and much more. February Fun Facts: *In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling. *Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s. *The oldest surviving love poem till date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians around 3500 BC. *In Medieval times, girls ate unusual foods on St Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future husband. *Many across the newly formed United States celebrated Washington's Birthday in the 17th century while George Washington was still alive. However, it wasn't until 1885 that Chester Arthur signed the bill that made it a federal holiday. *Even though many states celebrate Abraham Lincoln’s birthday concurrently with Washington's birthday, it is not a federally designated holiday. *Traditionally, many celebrated and continue to celebrate Washington's Birthday with desserts made with cherries. Cherry pie, cherry cake, bread made with cherries, or just a huge bowl of cherries are often enjoyed on this day. Of course, this relates to the apocryphal story that Washington would not tell a lie when asked if he cut down a cherry tree. *On February 22nd of almost every year since 1888, Washington's Farewell Address has been read in the US Senate. While this does not happen on Presidents' Day, it is an annual celebration of Washington's Birthday that stems from 1862 when the Address was read as a way to boost morale during the Civil War. This address was and is so important because it warns of political factionalism, geographical sectionalism, and interference by foreign powers in the nation's affairs. Washington stressed the importance of national unity over sectional differences. *The average groundhog is 20 inches long and normally weighs from 12 to 15 pounds. Punxsutawney Phil weighs about 20 pounds and is 22 inches long. Groundhogs are covered with coarse grayish hairs (fur) tipped with brown or sometimes dull red. They have short ears, a short tail, short legs, and are surprisingly quick. Their jaws are exceptionally strong. *Insects do not bother groundhogs and germs pretty much leave them alone. They are resistant to the plagues that periodically wipe out large numbers of wild animals. One reason for this is their cleanliness. *A groundhog can whistle when it is alarmed. Groundhogs also whistle in the spring when they begin courting. Central Baptist Association Page 2 “...every pastor, spiritual leader and committed church member wants to make a difference…” 1 Thessalonians 1:7-8 “You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit. And so you became a model to all the believers in Macedonia and Achaia. The Lord’s message rang out from you, not only in Macedonia and Achaia— your faith in God has become known everywhere.” My oldest daughter wanted to wear makeup when she was 12 years old. Trudy and I had decided that she would not be allowed to wear any makeup until she was at least 16 and even then it would be very little. I told her one day that “she was beautiful just as she was” and that “makeup is only to be used to maybe complement the beauty she already had… not hide it.” I think that is applicable to the church as well. All the “stuff” we use to make “church” or a worship service more enticing or exciting can actually take away from the beauty of the message in song and the message of the gospel. Certainly there are some things that can complement a worship service but they don’t need to be overdone to the point that it distracts from the message. extravagant presentation when the simple message will meet the need. There are times when I wonder what would happen if we didn’t have the multimedia capabilities or even the electrical power that runs all the lights, sounds and pictures that are used in a worship service. What would be left? What would happen? The gospel of Jesus Christ is a simple gospel so that anyone can understand it; it is also so deep in its theology that even the greatest Biblical scholars can’t understand it completely. Christ speaks to every need and every heart, so let’s focus on the message that brings eternal life and not get caught up in things that may hide that wonderful message. Remember, Jesus said “But the hour is coming, and now is when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking 24 such to worship Him. God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23-24 Serving Christ together for HIS glory alone! - John I believe every pastor, spiritual leader and committed church member wants to make a difference in the world by proclaiming the good news of the gospel and ministering to the needs of others. I also believe that sometimes we become so focused on doing that, that we overdo what we are called to do. There is a tendency to make an Be sure to check our website often, “www.cbanm.org”.
