All were amazed and asked one another, "What is this? A
new teaching with authority. He commands even the
unclean spirits and they obey him." His fame spread
everywhere throughout the
whole region of Galilee.
- Mk 1:27-28
Galilea. - Mc 1, 27-28

SOCIAL MINISTRY
International Day against Human
Trafficking on February 8, 2015
For more than a decade, USCCB's Anti-Trafficking Program
has been a leader in the fight against human trafficking.
We've helped more than 3,000 survivors and their family
members begin the road to recovery and rebuild their
lives. We've trained organizations in the U.S. and abroad
on how to help victims. We partner with immigrant
communities who are at-risk to help spread the word
about human trafficking and learn how to protect their
communities. We work with policymakers to draft,
improve and evaluate laws on human trafficking. We are
committed to advocating for the victims of this crime and
seeking an end to modern day slavery.
In 2014 the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and
the International Union of Superiors General designated
February 8, the feast day of St. Josephine Bakhita as an
annual day of prayer and awareness against human
trafficking. St. Josephine Bakhita was kidnapped as a child
and sold into slavery. Once she was freed, she dedicated
her life to sharing her testament of deliverance from
slavery and comforting the poor and suffering. On
February 8 and throughout the year, the USCCB
encourages you to set aside
time to reflect on the
experiences of survivors of
human trafficking, pray for
their emotional, physical and
spiritual healing, and make a
personal commitment to
combating this evil.
St. Josephine Bakhita Prayer
St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child
and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated
from your physical enslavement, you found true
redemption in your encounter with Christ and his Church.
St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of
slavery; intercede with God on their behalf so that they
will be released from their chains of captivity. Those
whom man enslaves, let God set free. Provide comfort to
survivors of slavery and let them look to you as an
example of hope and faith. Help all survivors find healing
from their wounds. We ask for your prayers and
intercessions for those enslaved among us.
Amen.
Valentine/Sweetheart Dinner and Dance
Saturday, February 14 the public is invited to the Knights
of Columbus Hall for a night of dinner and dancing.
Cocktails at 5:00 pm, buffet style dinner at 6:00 pm and
dancing from 7:00—10:00 pm with music by Just the Two
of Us. Cost for the dinner and dance is $18.00/person and
dance only is $10.00/person. Please call with your
reservations by Wednesday, February 11 to 920-921-1290.
Weekly Justice Challenge
February 1, 4th Week in Ordinary Time
On February 4 we
celebrate the birthday of
Rosa Parks, a woman of
courage (and in her words,
a tired woman) who chose
to take a stand against
segregation by refusing to
move to the back of the
bus. Rosa Parks is a stellar
example of wisdom which can only come with age and
experience. Rosa Parks was a remarkable woman whose
life and actions revealed what it meant to take a stand for
justice - even while sitting down.
There is a tradition in the African American community of
honoring the oldest person present at prayer or worship by
inviting that elder to sit in a place of honor. The presider
or lector then asks their permission to lead the community
in prayer or to proclaim the Word. Your challenge this
week is to honor an elder in your life: a grandparent or a
senior citizen who lives next door – or a person of another
culture, faith, or color - or a “Rose Parks” type of person
in the parish or community. Invite this person to share
some wisdom with your family through storytelling or
simple conversation. Let the person’s 70 or 80 or 90 years
of faithful living give your family insights into what God
calls all of us to do. Then go out and do it! Copyright ©

Holy Family Challenge: The National Day of Prayer for the
African American and African Family is this Sunday,
February 1. On this day in New York, his Eminence,
Cardinal Dolan, will be the Principal Celebrant for this
annual celebration of Catholic faith and Black culture.
This entire month we celebrate Black History Month. At a
General Audience on October 9, 2013, Pope Francis said,
“The Church is catholic because she is the space, the
home in which the faith is proclaimed to us in its
entirety, in which the salvation brought to us by Christ is
offered to everyone. The Church is catholic because she is
universal, she is spread abroad through every part of the
world and she proclaims the Gospel to every man and to
every woman. The Church is not a group of elite; she does
not only concern the few. The Church has no limits; she is
sent to the totality of people, to the totality of the
human race. And the one Church is present even in her
smallest parts.”
Our church, our family and our society are rich in culture
and diversity. The history of the Church is full of many
Black / African Catholic saints. Many lost their lives in
defense of the faith. Many were also honored for their
contributions to the Church and their community. How are
you called to demonstrate a catholic presence to everyone
you meet – no matter the culture, faith or color?

Save the Date:
Catholics at the Capitol, April 8, 2015
Every two years, the Wisconsin Catholic Conference (WCC)
hosts Catholics at the Capitol and hundreds of Catholics
from around the state come to Madison for a day
dedicated to reflection, discourse and formation in
Catholic social teaching and public policy issues.
This event takes place at the Monona Terrace Community
and Convention Center. The day starts with registration
and breakfast, followed by a morning general session that
begins with a prayer service and ends with a keynote
address. This year's keynote address will be provided by
Dr. Jonathan J. Reyes, Executive Director of the
Department of Justice, Peace and Human Development for
the USCCB. Throughout the day participants attend two
breakout sessions that focus on various aspects of Church
social teaching and current policy issues. There is also an
introduction to Catholic social teaching for those wishing
to gain a better understanding of the principles that guide
Catholic public policy engagement. The afternoon includes
a general session panel. Participants are also encouraged
to meet with their elected officials and advocate for
issues identified by the WCC.
Please mark your calendars now! “Save the date" of
Wednesday, April 8 for Catholics at the Capitol 2015. If
you are interested in a carpool, contact Jack at the parish
office at 921-0508 or [email protected].
