Yes No 5th Sunday In Ordinary Time Healing Love On the one hand, there are suffering human beings like Job, slaves longing for the shade. On the other hand, there is God who cares about us, who heals the brokenhearted and sustains the lowly. Jesus comes into this world of suffering as God the healer: Those whom he cured were many. The community of the followers of Jesus has a calling to bring healing to this world full of suffering. They are to go about this by means of service: just as Simon’s mother-in-law did, they are to use their healing from Jesus as an opening to serve others. They are to be like Paul, making themselves all things to all people, the slaves of all. The Catholic Church challenges us to hunger and thirst for what is right so that, like God, we might fill the hungry with good things. Especially through his life-style and through his actions, Jesus revealed that love is present in the world in which we live—an effective love, a love that addresses itself to man and embraces everything that makes up his humanity. This love makes itself particularly noticed in contact with suffering, injustice and poverty— in contact with the whole historical ‘human condition,’ which in various ways manifests man’s limitations and frailty, both physical and moral. --Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. This is the case in today's Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: "He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Jesus knew, however, that he couldn't possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His "purpose" was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, "Woe to me if I do not preach" that good news. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Could the miracles be confirmations of Jesus’ message of salvation? What did he say was the “purpose for which he came”? Jesus as a person used every bit of energy he possessed to carry out his mission. Does “Rising very early before dawn, he left and went off to a deserted place, where he prayed” fit in with his tireless effort to carry out his ministry? How close are you to Jesus in using all your energy for some purpose? What is that purpose? Blessed Are the Merciful The 5th Crusaders woke up in the middle of the night knee deep in water. They had camped, carelessly, below a flood-gate on the Nile River, so the Egyptians had quietly opened the gate. They had no choice but to surrender. The Sultan had lost 10,000 men in battle. Another 80,000, mostly women and children and elderly, had starved to death in the siege of Damietta. Yet when the crusade leaders presented themselves as hostages to Sultan Malik al-Kamil, he greeted them with a lavish banquet. They were dumb-founded. When Malik heard that their men were starving, he immediately provided all the food they needed until they found enough ships to sail back to Italy (theirs had been sunk in the fighting). Ten percent of the Egyptians were Christians. Malik treated them with the same mercy as his Muslim subjects. When Pope Innocent III had announced this crusade, Malik had offered Jerusalem in exchange for a peace treaty. Ten years later, Malik simply gave Jerusalem to the Christian world. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Our next Pax Christi Friday evening is in February. For details, [email protected] (or 510 207 6720 after he returns from Thailand Feb 11).
